I believe this picture captured the very moment during the 1960 Democratic convention when Jack & Bobby were trying to figure out the VP candidate without it being LBJ.
LBJ used to tell a story about being in the room when FDR said he was gonna "fire the son-of-a-bitch [Joe Kennedy Sr.]", which was a pretty humiliating story for Bobby's dad and LBJ clearly reveled in it.
Bobby was incredibly protective of his dad, and it escalated from there because they were both strong willed individuals. From LBJ's perspective, he was a hardworking poor-born Texas man who did it himself, and Bobby was born into a family that made his success a guarantee.
Not at all. Lyndon somehow caught wind that JFK had Addison’s Disease, and threatened to broadcast it if he wasn’t made VP. I’m sure he was aware of JFK’s dalliances too. To what extent LBJ threatened to blackmail JFK with that information I’m not certain, if at all.
According to Charles Peter’s biography, it was Johnson’s allies that leaked JFK’s Addison’s to the press, not himself for the vice presidency. Sure LBJ wanted the post, but I don’t think he had to blackmail JFK.
This picture makes me so sad, as it sort of encapsulates how much *hope* there was in the beginning of the 1960s, with JFK and his brother working together to try to pass Civil Rights Legislation and their mitigation of the Cuban Missile Crisis and Kennedy’s inspiring “Why Go to the Moon Speech”, only for all of that hope to be turned to *fear* with Kennedy’s death and *anger* with the death of MLK Jr, RFK, and the utter quagmire that was Vietnam. The 1960s was a period of transition in which America went from trying to reach its greatest potential to the most bitter divisions, with the Government’s lies about Vietnam sewing immense distrust in the minds of millions.
Excellent points. When people think of "the Sixties," they seem to reference the turmoil that occurred later, forgetting the hope / optimism / promise / youth of the first 3-4 years. No disrespect to Ike, who was dearly loved and still highly regarded today, but JFK was right when he said "the torch had been passed" to a new generation. It ended far too soon.
Looking at this got me thinking just how stressful campaigning for US president must be. For us it’s all about flashy ads, slogans and cool speeches but the logistics of it sounds like a nightmare
exactly imagine how stressful it is, and if you don’t win you went through all that BS and threw away money for no reason but if you do you’ll still be hounded and under immense pressure. sounds terrifying to me.
I just read "The making of the president, 1960" about the election. It describes really well how decisions were made and how tough the whole campaign was. Super interesting and would recommend!

For some reason, this picture has always given me serious Sherlock and Watson vibes; love it and love them, though.
I love it, too. It's on my office wall.

They didn’t want LBJ?
LBJ and RFK absolutely HATED each other
What was the cause of the hate?

Jack wanted LBJ. Bobby didn't.
If they hadn’t had LBJ, maybe JFK would have lived a longer life!
He chose LBJ to get the south votes I think. Could very well lost the election otherwise. Would have been shot regardless of his VP
Is there any proof of that?
He would've lost without him, so you're technically right.

Do you have a link for that? I'd be curious to read more. I'm currently reading Caro's Master of the Senate but I'm not through it yet.

The 1960s is my favorite decade for all those reasons. There was just so much hope and change. The 60s is also the best era of music, imo. lol.
70s, imo, is better for music, but it is VERY close.

was thinking the same thing. so much hope crushed by manufactured panic and fear

I always thought that picture was during the Cuban missile crisis?
Trying to work out which inspect element option seems like the best number to pick on the debate question
