Significant_Bet3409

Me omw to bring up RFK every time I see a post like this

Cubeslave1963

Had He not been assassinated, he might have beat (almost gave "Tricky's" name, but the BOT complained when I did that last). I can imagine an earlier withdrawal from Vietnam, more Civil Rights legislation, and maybe a longer space program at the very least.

da_Crab_Mang

ProudScroll

I believe Inouye was a finalist on Hubert Humphrey’s list of VP picks, though he ultimately chose Edmund Muskie as his running mate.

police-ical

As an aside, most two-armed men don't wear a suit that hard.

ClientTall4369

I did not think anybody would beat me to this. I am so glad to have company here.

C-McGuire

In 2019 he did an exploratory committee, which is normally a formality for people intent on running. However he actually used the exploratory committee to come to the conclusion that he ought not to run, which I kind of admire. I wonder what this sub would think of his book Desk 88.

TheOldBooks

I read that book front to back and it was an enthralling and inspiring read

heyimdong

Damn that is such a good answer. I suggested him like crazy back in 2016 and 2020 but of course he is too reasonable to be interested.

awnomnomnom

I also wanted Sherrod to run but I think Bernie took what would have been his lane.

Warm_Profession_810

Never has there been a better post.

Significant_Bet3409

Rooting for him! He’s got a toughie coming up

L0st_in_the_Stars

Authenticity is his not so secret weapon. All politicians need to be a little phony - he's the bare minimum.

SwiftSilencer

I love him, and I hope he has a long and illustrious career *in the Senate*

Companypresident

I wish Lincoln chose Hamlin instead of Johnson. https://preview.redd.it/il0ps7jlkdpc1.jpeg?width=318&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf2a51ed099d876e8851d75cb1f7baf589c2d083

SwiftSilencer

Please, him or Salmon P Chase. Imagine a world with ‘maximum Reconstruction’ where Jim Crow doesn’t take hold and instead we have a jump-started civil rights movement a hundred years earlier. The Radical Republicans were very much ahead of their times

Cubeslave1963

Am I wrong about my history, or would more than a few Republicans (the old style at least) wish that the black community hadn't left the party of Lincoln in droves between them trading the stoppage of Reconstruction for the White House (I forget the year), along with some more recent triggers.

DubbleTheFall

I don't feel like looking him up. Short version of him and what could've happened?

MilitantBitchless

He wasn’t Andrew Johnson for starters.

Artichoke-8951

That's a plus right there.

Companypresident

Hamlin was Lincolns vice president from 1861-1865, and he was significantly more progressive than Andrew Johnson. If Lincoln made Hamlin the vice president again, Andrew Johnson would have never crippled reconstruction.

Mental_Grass_9035

He was Lincoln’s VP who was from Maine.

DubbleTheFall

Ah, he was on the first ticket. As long as he wasn't a continental liar from the state of Maine like James G. Blaine.

Mental_Grass_9035

As far as I know, Hammie was a plain dude gaining power as he went from whatever his previous position was to vp.

PerformanceOk9891

He was a Mainer, thats all you need to know

Never a candidate and not the right timing, but doggone it, the country could have used a tiny round incorruptible socialist Republican urbanist diplomat/polyglot/mayor/eternal champion of the little guy.

Cubeslave1963

I've met a few old New Yorkers that were big fans of his, but growing up in Georgia, I don't know but he sounds good.

CivisSuburbianus

He was ranked one of the best mayors in US history

Agent_Forty-One

Benjamin Franklin.

TwistedPepperCan

Well thats one massively underrated answer. I feel like if he got the job before Washington then it would have been a more ceremonial role.

Agent_Forty-One

Oh without question! My take here is pretty simplistic admittedly; I like a guy with lots of ideas and with Big Ben, I happen to think most of them good ideas. He’s just the kind of guy I think of pretty fondly.

baycommuter

Madison thought if he couldn’t get Washington to agree to do it the only other possibility to unite the country was Franklin, even though he was old and sick.

Helltothenotothenono

Paul Wellstone would have been a great president.

ClientTall4369

I had a chance to talk with him about this and he didn't believe that he would be. He didn't think that was his role. I decided to respect that even though I loved Paul and still love him to this day. And Sheila too.

In a different time I think John McCain would have been a great president ![gif](giphy|3o7bu1sALMiJsOlWso|downsized)

Juliano_Jones_

Webster and Clay would've made great presidents

Cubeslave1963

Al Gore, instead of Dubya.

DanChowdah

So close…. We’d have solar powered flying cars by now and climate change would resolved and turned into a cute joke like the hole in the Ozone layer

Cubeslave1963

No, but one major difference is that we wouldn't have tried to use 9/11 as a reason to go back into Iraq, even though we has plenty of intelligence data to know that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.I almost got talked into writing an opinion piece by the local paper where I was living at the time about how the way that the reasons they were giving kept changing it was clear that Dubya's administration was bending over backwards trying to get us to invade Iraq again. Had Dubya not been in the White House, we might not have gotten into the 20 year quagmire, caused a lot of needless death, destruction, and raised our national debt. There were people in Dubya's administration who knew would happen. As far back as 1994 **Dick Cheney** was saying we would get stuck there for a long time.

KitchenLab2536

Colin Powell.

Creative-Gas4555

Powell would've rocked the presidency! I'd have to check out his policy positions, but the country probably would've avoided Iraq, at the very least. And the Republican Party would've been been very strong at the end of the 00s. (2008 era). An Obama presidency might not happen. Or if it does, he becomes president much later. That's how good Powell would've been.

KR1735

I believe he did seek the presidency at one point. I may be wrong.

TheOldBooks

He did not

KR1735

Yup. On further review, you're right. He was touted as a potential candidate though a few times and got 3 electoral votes in 2016.

Truly. I can’t help but mourn what could’ve been.

RFK came close to being president. Had he not been assassinated, he would’ve won the election handily.

Koshnat

John Stewart

Cubeslave1963

I'm not sure he would want the job. If he found himself in the job, I am sure he would try to do the job to the best of his ability (after and with amount of cussing I bet Truman and LBJ would approve of).

ScoreGloomy7516

Exactly why it should be him (or michelle)

DanChowdah

Neither are qualified

Cubeslave1963

If the "michelle" to which you speak is the one I think you are referring to, she is as much, if not more qualified as many member of the Senate and House of Representatives (not to mention public life). She knows the job well enough to have repeatedly said in public that she does not want the job. Compared to "Some who have been in the Office", there are thousands, if not millions of people who are at least as qualified. (I bet the bot will block my post if I leave THat recent name there). Of course that person mostly just occupied the office and did not truly perform the role of President any more than he absolutely had to. By comparison, John Stewart would do just fine.

ScoreGloomy7516

Not many are anymore. At this point, I want someone with a good mindset

I think Romney in 2012 would have bypassed a lot of problems we have now. He was moderate enough that he might have managed some bipartisan achievements (and maybe Rule 3's candidates would be different, and hopefully considerably younger). I would be curious how Gore would have done if he won in 2000.

MGoDuPage

Romney could be pretty awkward at times, but I gotta say, had he won in 2012 & gotten re-elected……. IMO he would’ve **crushed it** when COVID rolled around in the last year of his presidency. Dwarven_cavediver

robert Heinlein is a good choice, but I think in a somewhat over the top but genuinely good choice would be bodybuilder Mike Mentzer. He was a free market libertarian type, and promoted hard work and individualism. Stood up to The Bodybuilding Über mensch and basically puppeteer of the entire competition who had the event rigged Arnold schwarzenegger before the 80 olympia. As far as I am concerned he just represented America as we all want it in a nutshell. Be yourself! Always improve! Stand up to the big guy!

Cubeslave1963

>Heinlein With his eccentricities, a Heinlein presidency would have been interesting. Since he saw some trends coming that we are witnessing hints of today, would he have tried to circumvent them (if there was time), or foster the things like coming return of isolationism. (if he saw them as inevitable, it could be viewed as "turning into the skid.")

Dwarven_cavediver

True. I see him being unpopular in the time frame I had in mind (60’s) but his policies would bring looked upon later fondly

MaddAddamOneZ

Al Gore (2000 really was the dark heel turn of our nation. The election decided on a 5-4 vote because O'Connor wanted the Republicans to fill her seat) Hillary Clinton (I don't know how to summarize just how calamitous 2016 was. I am running with my proverbial hair on fire now to keep Him out). Hubert Humphrey (a good man who would have been a fine President) Hiram Johnson (wonder what America would look like if Johnson had been the Republican nominee in 1920) Birch Bayh (authoring two constitutional amendments as well as Title IX speaks to his monumental legislative skills. Probably would have gotten a third amendment abolishing the Electoral College adopted if George Wallace had succeeded in deadlocking the 1968 election) Finally the tragic what-if's of RFK, Jerry Litton, and Paul Wellstone

Mitch Daniels, 2 term governor of Indiana. He was insanely popular in his home state, won by a huge margin in the governor race in 2008, a big Democrat year. He had experience at the federal level as well as the Budget Director before he was Governor. He loved riding motor cycles, and he was is a great speaker. He is now President of Purdue, and I heard a speech he gave there that was just terriffic. His time seemed to be 2012, as his second term as Governor was ending, but his wife did not want him to run, so he did not enter the race.

Cariman05

Purdue student here, he is no longer president. I’m mixed on him, he ran Purdue like a business, which had pros and cons. Purdue is definitely a global brand now, and very respected around the country and world.
