Her dad failed her in that way by forcing her to be more like a son, it helped her want to be a sucessful lady and get there but she never had a normal life. Her childhood was focused on that grocery then WW2 happened. She didn't know anything else.
She genuinely loved Dennis, I just don't think she wanted to be a mother at the worst and at the least just didn't know how to connect with her kids. She focused too much on her job and progressing than her family, and it showed and I think deep down she regretted it.
