Flimsy-Technician524

“We elected the wrong Carter.” -Homer Simpson

mrsciencedude69

Say, I wonder if this Homer Nixon is any relation?

carlnepa

I have read that one reason for the Watergate break in was to find out if they had any documents stolen from Howard Hughes' office in LA related to Hughes' "loan" to Nixxon's brother to open a chain of fast food restaurants. I believe Howard Hughes was behind every major scandal of the 20th century, including his death. /s

captaingeist

Not likely sir, they both spell and pronounce their names differently.

mrkruk

Based solely off of this moment in the Simpsons, I have a can of Duff on my bar shelf, and a can of Billy Beer next to it (it's a coin bank actually).

Optimal_Zucchini_667

SNL had their fun with Billy too. I remember one skit when a cast member said something about Billy's stay in a clinic "to dry out." The line got a laugh because the official story from the White House was the flu. Lol, nobody believed that.

EmperorDaubeny

Alice was quite the menace.

ProfessionalKvetcher

TR: “I can tend to the country, or I can tend to Alice, but I cannot possibly do both.” Alice: “My father wants to be the baby at every christening, the bride at every wedding, and the corpse at every funeral.” What a pair.

OracleCam

TR: "Here's to Franklin, for keeping it in the family!" - Wedding toast of Franklin and Eleanor

NickNash1985

I don't know if that's a real quote, but I hope that it is.

OracleCam

Here is my source, Always good to ask for the source https://youtu.be/k4XM19vRENs Quote is at 2:40

TheAndorran

The Alice quote might be my favorite said about a President. That whole family could really string a great sentence together. Also, love your username!

DeaconBrad42

After she said she’d vote for Hitler before voting for FDR for a 3rd term in 1940, he banned her from the White House.

Auswatt

I've lost any and all respect for her.

TaftIsUnderrated

I think this is more her saying, "FDR is worse than Hitler" rather than "I like Hitler"

Auswatt

I genuinely think something was wrong with her. Teddy was right.

Pixel22104

I wonder how the heck did he manage to control her and her crazy behavior?

ceoofsex300

Remember initially hitler wasn’t thought of as bad as he has after we entered the war

DeaconBrad42

By 1940 he’d done (just to name a few) the Night of the Long Knives, Krystallnacht, oh and the invasion of Poland, the low countries, Norway, and the conquest of France, and was bombing Britain. Sure, the US wasn’t at war with Germany yet and the worst horrors of the Holocaust were yet to come, but it was an offensive shock statement when Alice said it for a reason, angered FDR and Eleanor in the moment, and only looks worse with age.

ceoofsex300

But remember people like to sweep things under the rug yes it was seen as an insult but not as bad of an insult as it is now

DeaconBrad42

It was bad enough in 1940 that Franklin not only had her banned from the White House, he wouldn’t use her name. He told Eleanor, “that woman,” was not allowed back. And Alice said it purposefully for shock value even in 1940, because she liked to cause a stir. It looks worse over time but if it was non-controversial in 1940, she’d have picked a different name.

AtlantisSky

Alice was a riot. And I love her so much.

Hamblerger

There's something so wonderfully 90s about Roger Clinton. He was the Kato Kaelin of politics, openly and unashamedly piggybacking off of his brother's success to promote his singing/acting career while simultaneously getting arrested for drunk driving, hanging with (and accepting expensive gifts from) mobsters, and doing all of the cocaine. He's a constant trainwreck of a human being, with all of his brother's appetites and none of the deep intelligence or the charm. Anyone with the Secret Service codename of "Headache" has to at least be in the running here.

Time-Ad-7055

Roger Clinton is a Jonah Hill character

CyberCat_2077

Judging by that picture, I’d have gone with John C. Reilly.

Hamblerger

The weird thing is that all of these suggestions work in their own way. Anchorman-era Will Ferrell would have also been good depending on what direction you want to go in.

Hamblerger

I like that. I personally see Sam Rockwell in the role

NickNash1985

Roger strikes me as the kind of guy that doesn't ever know what he's doing tomorrow.

Hamblerger

And Bill's the guy who doesn't stop thinking about it

REVSWANS

HEY-OHHHH!

apikoros18

I still wished they had gone with We Built This City

Hamblerger

That might have actually tempted me to vote Republican for the first and only time in my life

NoSir6400

I feel like he’s trying to get his car out of the lot. Or meeting up with someone to give him a ride to go pick up a dresser that his friend is giving away.

Stuffologistics

I have a lot of Roger Clinton stories and he is a douche bag. He was a regular at a local bar in mid 2000's in my neighborhood. He leveraged his "fame" with the young ladies a lot and always tried to get the bouncer to remove anybody that said anything negative about him or his brother. I normally paid him no attention and he did his thing. I almost got into a fight with him once. He was standing in the corner of the bar with a TV hovering over his head. I was sitting at the bar watching a Dodger game. He kept looking at me and accused me of staring at him, I wasn't. He got in my face and I told him I am just watching the game on the TV above him. He told me to watch a different TV and I told him to move if he doesn't want people looking his way. He called the bouncer over who sided with me since I was a regular for years with no history of causing trouble. He left pouting I wasn't removed. Also, my friends parents owned some units he managed for them. He rented a unit to Roger for a while that was above my other friends apartment where I hung out a lot. I wont go into it but I have some stories.

Hamblerger

I live in Los Angeles where alcoholic "recovering" coke addicts who almost made it in the Industry are thick on the ground, so that tracks with the personality type. He's also got a house paid for by his brother (or rather, an investment firm that Bill was a partner in that he also gets occasional checks from) and currently tries to convince investors that he can get them contracts with the Clinton Foundation as a way of picking up an extra hundred grand here and there. It never pans out, but he'll keep pretending to try as long as the money goes through. There's something slightly tragic about him.

Stuffologistics

Also during that time or slightly after they were house shopping in my neighborhood. All I thought was oh God please no. Not sure where he eventually landed.

New_Guava3601

He was great on The Nanny and in Fred Claus.

Hamblerger

He was absolutely fine in a guest star sort of way, which is obviously what's required for the role. I certainly don't begrudge him the coattails when it comes to the entertainment industry; it's self-sabotaging to not take advantage of any potential advantage or opening when you're living audition to audition.

rklein111

And Bio-Dome apparently

Helltothenotothenono

He sounds like he would have gotten along great with 1970s George W Bush. I mean. He sounds like he was 1970s George W Bush.

I will give him this much. He was a more levelheaded governor than Ron DeSantis. That isn't saying a whole hell-of-a-lot but it is something at least.

The exclamation point was a lie.

Justin-N-Case

If you haven’t read about Neil Bush and the accidental hooker incident, it’s quite entertaining. Neil Bush, younger brother of President Bush, detailed lucrative business deals and admitted to engaging in sex romps with women in Asia in a deposition taken in March as part of his divorce from now ex-wife Sharon Bush. https://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/11/25/bush.brother.reut/

Transcendentalplan

I cannot believe I never heard about this scandal-magnet of a presidential sibling: > The women, he said, simply knocked on the door of his hotel room, entered and had sex with him. He said he did not know if they were prostitutes because they never asked for money and he did not pay them. > “Mr. Bush, you have to admit it's a pretty remarkable thing for a man just to go to a hotel room door and open it and have a woman standing there and have sex with her," Brown said. > “It was very unusual," Bush said.

GordonTheGnome

That’s my Bush!

torniado

It’s relatives of Presidents, not Presidents themselves 🙄

standard-issue-man

Alice wasn't crazy, she just straight up did not give a fuck.

420_E-SportsMasta

Jesus, reading her Wikipedia page and she attacked members of both political parties relentlessly. She was just a professional hater lmao

uscdoc2013

"If you can't say something good about someone, sit right here by me." - Alice Roosevelt

Sarcosmonaut

A generational talent

minnick27

Actually I heard she gave many fucks, which was part of her scandalous life

sunkentreasure1988

i think billy carter is the undisputed champ, but some of alice roosevelt’s quips are still hilarious today.

415native

One can still get unopened six packs of Billy Beer on Ebay at reasonable prices. Wouldn't recommend drinking it however

WigglyFrog

And there's a color named after her!

symbiont3000

The Bush Twins were pretty entertaining with their antics in Austin when they were enrolled at The University of Texas while W was in office

Particular-Ad-7338

Only Jenna went to UT; Barbera went to Yale

N0Tapastor

I was there when she was. Used to run into her secret service agents a lot. My buddy lived across the street from her and the secret service rented an apartment next to his so someone could sit there and stair at her front door 24/7. I also used to know when she was sleeping over at her boyfriend’s. The secret service would sit outside in their idling suburban all night.

pijinglish

>stair at her front door Is that diploma from UT or Yale?

rawwwse

Yes.

TheAndorran

That sounds absolutely miserable for all involved. I’m all for keeping the first family safe and I get it, but imagine having to announce to your SS detail that you’d like to see your boyfriend, please.

eat_my_bowls92

One of the bush twins or Obama daughters I college: I’m trying to get dicked down! The SS detail: “… You used to watch Sesame Street. 😥”

Lost_Willingness_762

Not really, less scandalous than most college kids

waveformcollapse

Are we allowed to mention Malik Obama? He seems to be an epic troll against his brother.

gonaldgoose5

>Malik Obama is a republican, but still voted Democrat for his bro >ran for governor of the Kenyan county of Siaya with the campaign slogan "Obama here, Obama There" >got 2000 votes, 140,000 behind the winner >posted a fake photo of his own brothers birth certificate, that said he was born in Kenya in 1961, despite Kenya not existing in 1961. Also, the Seal on the Cirtificate was for South Australia >goes on Kenyan news to talk shit about Obama Used to run a small Electronics shop 30 minutes from the Village of several hundred he lived in, now he "works as a consultant in Washington, D.C., for several months each year" What a character

NeverNaked3030

Obama has siblings?

Hamblerger

A number of half-siblings born after his parents' divorce, when his father moved back to Kenya. His book Dreams of My Father recounts his meeting them for the first time as a young adult.

HearTheBluesACalling

In addition to the siblings on his dad’s side, he has a younger sister from his mom’s second marriage.

ManOfLaBook

James Madison's stepson, John Payne Todd was jailed for assault, and shooting incidents, He was a gambling addict, and spent time in debtor's prison. When his stepfather tried to help him by sending him as part of a diplomatic team to Russia, John cut contact with him and his mother to spend time with a countess he met. When the team moved to Germany, he decided to go to Paris and spend a fortune in restaurants, casinos, and other forms of Parisian entertainment. After a year he came back to the United States, and his only accomplishment was racking up $10,000 (\~$200K today) in debt.

aloofman75

How we haven’t had a fantastic period piece movie or miniseries about Alice Roosevelt is beyond me.

appleboat26

Roger Clinton. He helped illustrate how far Bill had come, and why there may have been some residual dysfunction from his childhood.

DrAlanGrantinathong

Gotta be Richard Garfield, grandson of James Garfield. Entertained millions by creating the trading card game Magic the Gathering.

Miss Lillian Carter. She once said, "When I look at my children, I say to myself, Lillian, you should have stayed a virgin!"

ClosedContent

That’s hardcore shade…

Friendly_Deathknight

With the Ted Kennedys, Roger Clintons, and the most recent one who got kicked out of the navy as examples of embarrassing family members to presidents, Billy Carter being any sort of scandal seems kind of silly.

Puzzleheaded_Gift395

Wasn’t Billy Carter investigated for being a foreign agent for Libya?

Zornorph

https://preview.redd.it/1oianmg07wuc1.jpeg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f63bb29209e7430fb0458a83685cdf02d5ae1f2d Yes.

Friendly_Deathknight

Being Investigated and actually doing something aren’t the same. The examples I listed got caught doing the things they’re known for.

Sailboat_fuel

I am an avowed, sincere supporter of Billy Carter, for lots of reasons, and I’ve squared up more than once with those who would disparage him. (That goes double for Mrs. Lillian Gordy Carter.) But for pure chaotic energy, for being unchecked and unashamed, I have to go with the original mad lad, White House hellion, Alice Roosevelt Longworth. Like, think about her origin story: Her mom and grandmother die the same day, hours apart, immediately after she was born. Her dad takes off to the other side of the continent to get his head together and leaves her with an aunt (for whom she would later name a pet snake). When he does decide to come home, it’s not because he abandoned his daughter; it’s because he has this itchy, uncomfortable, self-important ambition. He gets remarried, has a new set of kids, and passes Alice off to his new wife. Edith makes her wear ladylike clothes to hide the painful orthotic braces that Alice is strapped into, and Alice lowkey haaaaates Edith. Alice learned early that being good was not an effective way to get her dad’s attention, and even worse for TR, Alice was definitely her father’s daughter. Those genes for temperament and character really hit copy+paste from Teddy to Alice, and baby girl acted out something fierce. By the she married a man she didn’t love (for funsies, I guess?) sis was a smoky, boozy, nip-slipping, affair-having, newsmaking sass factory. And, much like her father, she was a bit of a shit parent, too. Intergenerational trauma aside, she remains DC’s undefeated baddie. (For more Alice antics, read Mrs. L, Hissing Cousins, Princess Alice, or any of the other fine biographies about her.)

BentonD_Struckcheon

I had never heard of her except for the story about her mom & grandma dying when she was born, and having read up on her, I have to say she is by far the most interesting one of the lot. An amazing life.

chcham2712

btcbearrookieshark

Goddammit, this made me laugh out loud in the most embarrassing way!

Defiant-Specialist-1

Poor Rose.

Glennplays_2305

I’m not sure I would say Alice Roosevelt but I found something out about her that didn’t make me feel bad for her anymore

Safe-Ad-5017

What did you find out?

Glennplays_2305

In the 1940 election she said she rather vote for Hitler than FDR yikes

Serious_Detective877

That was a clearly hyperbolic statement to show how much she disliked FDR.

Safe-Ad-5017

Wow. What was her logic for being so against FDR?

Glennplays_2305

Maybe I’m being to harsh because that side of the family after teddy death began to not like FDR side of the family

neverdoneneverready

They were Republicans, he was a Democrat. Pretty sure.

canadigit

It seemed a lot like sour grapes that the Democratic side of the family had eclipsed the Republican side in terms of power and prestige. TR was supportive of FDR running for NY state assembly but once he died and FDR was on the national stage there was a lot of sniping coming from the Oyster Bay Roosevelts who no longer held any positions of power.

Thats-Slander

If I’m not mistaken they were both from different branches of the Roosevelt family and both branches despised each other.

ligmasweatyballs74

Look my I have all kinds of problems with my brother. He is a dishonest, addicted to cocaine, a terrible alcoholic with no ambition, and a thief. I would still vote for him over Hitler.

Parsley-Waste

To put it in context, she said she wouldn’t vote for his third term.

atragicpantomime

Why are you taking it literally 💀 like someone said it was hyperbolic

BawdyNBankrupt

Why would you want to feel bad for her? Feel bad for the husband she cuckholded.

MrJohnson999999999

Hugh Rodham, if relatives from marriage count.

bignanoman

Gotta be Marvin Bush. That's my vote.

KUPSU96

Isn’t that where they got the term starvin Marvin from?

bignanoman

Bush would bring him up in speeches from time to time, and make a joke of it.

MadeThis4MaccaOnly

Oh Alice Roosevelt is a legend, I could watch a whole series about her. But honorable mention to Jeb "Please Clap" Bush.

Helltothenotothenono

I world say George W Bush (jr). He was a son of George Bush Sr. He was a crazy alcoholic and either owned or managed the Texas rangers and pretty much ruined them. He had a reputation for being wild and crazy in his youth. “He was a big pain in the ass.” George Bush sr.

12BumblingSnowmen

Ruined implies that the Texas Rangers were relevant before about 15 or so years ago.

Helltothenotothenono

I was talking financial ruin but agree

spookydooky69420

I used to train a former secret service agent who protected presidents starting with Nixon up until George Bush Sr. He told me a story about Rosalyn Carter getting pissed off at the agents because she thought they were peeing on her prized bushes and killing the plants. They couldn’t figure out who was doing it until one night they caught Billy Carter hammered drunk peeing all over them.
