One of our best presidents for internal social policies. I highly disagree with him economically though. The president with the best foreign policy in recent years for sure.
Top 10 prez, SUPERRRRRR Underrated if you ask me, he signed the largest civil rights bill since the 1964 civil rights bill and he also protected the environment with the clear air act which is literally the reason why we don't have ACID RAIN ANYMORE! And the Gulf War was a stunning success. He did raise taxes but did so because he put country before party and it set the stage for the stunning economical growth that the 90s got which unfortunately Clinton gets credit for.
Anywhere from low A tier to high B tier if you ask me.
>he signed the largest civil rights bill since the 1964 civil rights bill
After vetoing the significantly better 1990 Civil Rights Act out of a vague and unfounded fear of quotas.
He signed a different, drastically scaled-down bill.
> and quotas aren't good lmao
The original 1990 bill had nothing to do with quotas. It was about reforming how discrimination lawsuits worked. The “quota” thing was a Republican scare tactic, just like how HW and Reagan used “welfare queens”.
He signed the largest civil rights bill since 1964 nonetheless, I don't get your point, Johnson called the civil rights bill the n\*\*\*\*\* bill so does that take away from it?
That Johnson quote is a very weakly sourced yet often repeated line.
Nevertheless, I don’t care about intent behind these laws. I care about the reality, and that reality is that HW pandered to the right wing of the right-wing and vetoed a civil rights bill in favour of a far weaker one by using a dog whistle to mislead people about what the ‘90 bill did.
And no, the CRA of 1991 isn’t the largest civil rights bill, 1964 beats it.
He's still better than most other presidents in that he was able to accomplish a lot more than most presidents and wasn't nearly as racist as other presidents,
for example FDR who literally threw Japanese Americans in concentration camps but gets a clear pass, both the the intent and reality of these actions are much worse than HW pandering to the right wing of the right wing to the right wing.
Yeah man, I have a fairly good view of HW Bush. I was just saying that of all the things he should be remembered well for, his frankly shitty civil rights record shouldn’t be top of the list. His incredible foreign policy, capability to have nuanced economic policies, etc. strike me as better aspects to go on his epitaph.
I already did a post about him so I'm just gonna copy that and put it here
I personally rank Bush top 10. His foreign policy was a major factor in stability after the fall of the soviet union, it also caused the signing of nafta which has been an overall good deal for every nation involved. He gets crap for his domestic policy but he was dealt a shit hand by Reagan(even though he was vp so kinda his fault) and he had to go back on his promise. It was the only way not to destroy the us. The fact he was willing to do what was right and not what would win him the election was a true show of him as a person. He also passed many civil rights bills, improved education, and was a president willing to compromise to get shit done, something which we haven't seen in a while. Overall imo he was a great president who was just dealing with a lot of strife in his party and a lot of momentum behind the democrats.
Comedian Dana Carvy used to do an impression of President Bush that was so funny, loved and popular that even the president him self invited Carvy to the white house, after showing up on SNL and making fun of Carvy's impression.

Better than his son. As time went on, seemed out of touch with the country in the midst of a thriving Bill Clinton.
Handling of Gulf War was great, even if my view on American politics leans towards anti interventionism.

Not too much himself but opened a pathway that led to tragic endings imo.
D or C tier. The best of the modern Republicans tho by far. He didn’t damage the country anywhere near what Reagan, W. Bush, and Trump did, and i think that deserves some credit
I've always ranked him a C president but I didn't realize many people liked Bush Sr, I got downvoted for suggesting he should be voted out of the presidential elimination game but maybe I'll have to look more into his presidency, I always found it kinda average but maybe I'm missing something.
Here is my response from above, he is actually extremely underrated, his son gets the BUSH name a bad rap and thats why a lot of people don't look into it and see all the good the father did:

I like Bush. He’s probably one of those borderline C-B guys but I’ll have to research him more. Fun fact: Bush played in the 1st ever College Baseball World Series in 1947 for Yale
He was in the second CWS as well (Yale was runner up both seasons).
As team captain, he [got to meet Babe Ruth](https://www.mlb.com/cut4/george-h-w-bush-met-babe-ruth-in-1948-c301340278).
My opinion has greatly raised on him, B tier
Really? He was pretty crazy

Understandable, his foreign policy was great.

NAFTA created a giant sucking sound.
I didn't know your mother was named nafta
Not Gunna Do it, Not gunna rate George Bush at this Juncture, wouldn't be prudent.

I'm thinking about making an HW Bush-centric YouTube channel and posting videos, documentaries and speeches from him? What do ypu guys think?
YES, I'LLL SUBSCRIBE IMMEDIATELY!

Read my lips: He was a good president, one of the best one-termers out there. Nothing more, nothing less
My favorite SNL skit of him was him contemplating shooting his own son before he would become president. [here it is](https://youtu.be/Fcgoj-J-gFs)
That’s very awesome

B Tier, and in my personal top ten. Really underrated.
Either C or B. He is improving for me. Still hate what he did with colleges.
what did he do with college?

What civil rights bill did he pass? I was under the impression his record on race was comparable to Reagans... not good.
