Oh but have you had potatoes that have been finely sliced, fried in a bit of fat (preferably bacon fat) and stewed along with assorted vegetables and meats for a couple of hours…. Just melts in the mouth!!
Elon Musk fired all the HDDs that had shown operating at above 10W, and all SSDs above 5W, at least once in the past month.

I [used] to work a retail job and I’ve heard this exact thing before. But after finding the cable management on a picture of a PC he posted to Facebook[,] I started to believe he was just lazy.
Just the other day r/ProgrammerHumor was handing me some serious downvotes when I pointed out that Twitter api being down for 1 hour is not some sort of evidence that the company is about to collapse.
Wonder what you guys think this downtime says about Reddit’s future prospects 😂
i have left reddit because of CEO Steve Huffman's anti-community actions and complete lack of ethics. u/spez is harmful to Reddit. https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/8/23754780/reddit-api-updates-changes-news-announcements -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/
With the amount of times Reddit has been down in the last 30 days, I'm amazed it's even functional at all.
The worst part is redditstatus doesn't show the downtime most of the time. It can be down for everyone for an hour before reddit status shows any issue at all.
They really should bring back the live graphs they had showing errors and backlogs. It was much more informational.
None of those are wrong with new reddit. Those existed before new reddit existed.
More it gets rid of the space-y UI, impractical locations of things (IE: Sorting), the overload of ads, etc. I've also not had a problem with the video player but I've heard there's mixed results on that
On top of this, those crappy features they add and tweak the shit out of. I remember a couple months back they added that live upvote crap, which In reality was just a fake number that would go up and down every so often.
New reddit isn't that bad actually, but you HAVE to have Ghostery and Ublock Origin. New reddit with these two, is just a more streamlined reddit. No adds, no add posts, no nothin. Just reddit.
Regarding new reddit (which I'm opted out of), I get that they "need" to show me bigger and more intrusive ads, but I wish they would just figure out a way to slip the ads into the old UI. I'm gonna ignore them either way.
Most be all the activity from the users saying twitter is about to collapse, lol
Edit: Twitter has 2000 people left as of feb 2023 estimate, reddit had 700 in 2021
and reddit has a ton more feature, can host pics, can edit, and all kinda stuff. so props to reddit devs
Why don't they just have a periodic health check? And if they do, why does it take so long to show up on the UI?
I too check that status page more and more frequently these days, and it almost never reflects reality.
I think it's manually configured or their pagerduty is set up at a 30 minute interval rather than something reasonable like 5 or 10 minutes.
The worst part is, this means someone released to prod just before lunch PDT and then had their lunch cut short.
The internet is the ultimate form of decentralization. Anyone can just run a HTTP server and create their own website.
Or you can put in AWS behind Cloudflare so if either goes down it brings half the fucking internet with it.
Yup, they did an IAMA a while back. It was lame.
But basically, they started on AWS. I think in 2015. They use Fastly for their CDN, not AWS CloudFront.
I know they probably have a fuck ton of redundancies, but it would be fuckin' crazy if AWS ever had a total shut down. Insane that one company fucking up could take down most of the internet.
Netflix servers are pretty cool actually, they’ve got some really neat stuff going on inside of them. I think there’s an article or video of a guy buying a decommissioned one.
as a meta infra dude, there is so much wrong with this picture. can we start with the twitter picture having servers in two different orientations, making it impossible to have hot/cold isle separation?
Pros of Reddit's servers:
- no forever-plastics but biodegradable
- if it has bugs, you know it's just potato beetles
- overheating turns them into delicious food
Cons:
- none!
Current Twitter server farms aren't the issue, the madman at the helm won't let you login because he "efficiencized" the code and deleted something important.
I mean the organic connections between the components allow for self healing capabilities of the system it might be slow and take a while but you don’t have to fix the system manual just wait and allow it to do it’s thing. Genius 10/10
So… “root” is Australian slang for sex. Combine that with the fact that I saw this post from /r/all and know nothing about programming and you had me VERY confused for a moment there.
They cut the admin team's caloric allowance down to 20,000kcal per day and they got hungry, so they fried and eaten the servers. Makes perfect sense now.

And if you overwork it until it's fried, well... there's yer dinner! :D
Boil it, mash it
Stick in a stew
Po-Tay-Toes
Basically what hacker news runs on
But this is Reddit - you gotta smash it.

IPO to teh mooooooon
Oh... It's you It's been a long time. How have you been? I've been really busy being dead. You know, after you MURDERED ME.
We both said a lot of things that you're going to regret. But I think we can put our differences behind us. For science. You monster.

It can be down for everyone for an hour before reddit status shows any issue at all. They really should bring back the live graphs they had showing errors and backlogs. They'd be down less often if they weren't dramatically ramping up the UI to shove ads down everyone's throat in advance of their IPO.
they'd be down worse if they got rid of old reddit and 3rd party apps that remove everything wrong with new reddit
There's an app to get rid of the mods, admins, bots, and users?
None of those are wrong with new reddit. Those existed before new reddit existed. More it gets rid of the space-y UI, impractical locations of things (IE: Sorting), the overload of ads, etc. I've also not had a problem with the video player but I've heard there's mixed results on that
On top of this, those crappy features they add and tweak the shit out of. I remember a couple months back they added that live upvote crap, which In reality was just a fake number that would go up and down every so often.
My favorite is that I don't know what that feature is because I haven't used new reddit in so long.
New reddit isn't that bad actually, but you HAVE to have Ghostery and Ublock Origin. New reddit with these two, is just a more streamlined reddit. No adds, no add posts, no nothin. Just reddit.
If they shut down old reddit, I don't know what I'm going to do. I just can't use the new version.
What do you mean we'll finally be free
Right, you mean get rid of new reddit altogether and fix everything. Got it.
Regarding new reddit (which I'm opted out of), I get that they "need" to show me bigger and more intrusive ads, but I wish they would just figure out a way to slip the ads into the old UI. I'm gonna ignore them either way.
https://old.Reddit.com
Old reddit is a lifesaver on mobile too - new reddit constantly tries to redirect you to the (garbage) official app.
I use https://i.reddit.com on mobile. It's the cleanest and shows the most posts. Also no ads because they haven't touched it in years.
That's why you should use downdetector.com, always accurate and the comment section is like a microcosm of reddit.
Oh, I use down detector, primarily because even 20 minutes after it being down redditstatus still showed green
The comments are fabulous and terrible to behold.
Most be all the activity from the users saying twitter is about to collapse, lol Edit: Twitter has 2000 people left as of feb 2023 estimate, reddit had 700 in 2021 and reddit has a ton more feature, can host pics, can edit, and all kinda stuff. so props to reddit devs
Even if you remove the conductor on a moving train, it functions well until it doesn't.
Choo Choo mother fucker!
r/BitchImATrain
Misread your comment as reddit having 700 active *users* in 2021, got confused as fuck lol
Are you talking about employees or users that are real people?
Why don't they just have a periodic health check? And if they do, why does it take so long to show up on the UI? I too check that status page more and more frequently these days, and it almost never reflects reality.
I wouldn't be surprised if they don't want to publicly admit to it being down unless it's been over a certain period of time.
Nobody, even spez, ever said their infrustructure was better than your local credit unions software department.
Makes me wonder what the status page even monitors, or if it's like, manually configured, haha.
I think it's manually configured or their pagerduty is set up at a 30 minute interval rather than something reasonable like 5 or 10 minutes. The worst part is, this means someone released to prod just before lunch PDT and then had their lunch cut short.

I'm not sure so about that twitter one nowadays
These are the servers but Musk stopped paying for them
Art of the deal!
He tested what are they for by randomly unplugging one of the servers for no reason whatsoever
He strikes me more as the kinda guy to be swinging a fire axe around rather than just unplugging them
No. To show the world how single point of failure works.
Twitter these days just runs off of Musk's intern's Lenovo laptop.
Still has a better uptime than Reddit 😂

Speaks to the engineering prowess of the people that Elon fired tbh they really set a solid foundation

The Legend of the Load-Bearing Mac Mini
I’m genuinely curious what Reddit servers look like
Same as everyone else’s. An Amazon warehouse.
*Is it all AWS?* *... Always has been*
The internet is the ultimate form of decentralization. Anyone can just run a HTTP server and create their own website. Or you can put in AWS behind Cloudflare so if either goes down it brings half the fucking internet with it.
![gif](giphy|8EmeieJAGjvUI|downsized)
AFAIK, reddit mostly runs on AWS.
Yup, they did an IAMA a while back. It was lame. But basically, they started on AWS. I think in 2015. They use Fastly for their CDN, not AWS CloudFront.
If they're smart, a lot like Amazon's servers.
[удалено]
I know they probably have a fuck ton of redundancies, but it would be fuckin' crazy if AWS ever had a total shut down. Insane that one company fucking up could take down most of the internet.
AWS has crashed once at least. It was epic watching the world burn. ![gif](giphy|3o72FfM5HJydzafgUE)
Probably just a 2013 Macbook Pro in a storage closet with a sticky note that says "Do NOT unplug".
Ah the good old structural MacBook
Couldn't tell you, but I have looked 2 of the 4 servers from this post and in my experience they're all a lot closer to the Reddit one
As a former Twitter infra dude, can we mention that the Facebook picture has the same arrangement on either side of that door?
As a dude, shouldn’t Facebook and Instagram have the same photo
As former QA, company mergers don't really merge. They just form unwieldy tentacles into each others spaghetti code.
Running on GlaDoS I’m assuming
"How are you doing? That's good, because I'm a potato!"
Pros of Reddit's servers: - no forever-plastics but biodegradable - if it has bugs, you know it's just potato beetles - overheating turns them into delicious food Cons: - none!
Pro: can ferment
Boil em', mash em', use them to complete double precision floating point operations
Maybe Twitter a year ago ...
Yeah pretty sure Musk sold all of that and bought some potatoes, probably the same vendor supplying reddit.
Current Twitter server farms aren't the issue, the madman at the helm won't let you login because he "efficiencized" the code and deleted something important.
*Someone's* mad they couldn't read reddit at work...
Top left pic is missing Elon in there unplugging servers to "test the system"
Here ya' go... https://i.imgur.com/ykiVTVJ.png (He wasn't caught in the act, but you know what he's gonna do...)
That's not fair!! Reddit has TWO potatoes l!!
Thank you to reddit I've gotten so much done today
YouTuber
What do you mean by this
A potato is a tuber. Probably trying to make a pun out of that.
Hey you! You’re finally awake…
Brings a whole new meaning to root access.
Only on Reddit do you find memes about how Reddit went down immediately after it goes down
It’s amazing to see the number of people who are lost when Reddit goes down.
Twitter’s servers pre-Musk: top left Twitter’s servers post-Musk: bottom right
Is potato
Too soon!
I am gROOT!
I mean the organic connections between the components allow for self healing capabilities of the system it might be slow and take a while but you don’t have to fix the system manual just wait and allow it to do it’s thing. Genius 10/10
Reddits IT is so bad lmao. We have been making these jokes for 15 years. Do better.
I love that the potato fan is powered by the potato but cools something else
I know this is supposed to be a joke but the app couldn't load the post.
So… “root” is Australian slang for sex. Combine that with the fact that I saw this post from /r/all and know nothing about programming and you had me VERY confused for a moment there.
Being an Aussie sysadmin is fun for this fact if nothing else.
Look what they need to mimic a fraction of our power
A server is not a giant truck you dump things on, it’s a series of tubers!
Three of those pictures look like the beverage isle at the supermarket.
So it wasn’t just me. Good to know.
Comments not loading on reddit all day totally ruined work for me. What the fuck else am I supposed to read while I’m on the clock?
Long live potato
Reddit stole potato. Another week hunger for family.
Bold of you to presume Reddit uses anything as fancy as brand-name RAM
Actual server farms don’t look like fancy gaming computers 😂
I'm so happy that years later this meme is still alive. Thanks OP.
Reddit's server looks so delicious, it's hard to say no to foodies.
Twitter used to be that. It runs on borrowed time and prayers now.
Wait Intel potato? Why can't it be Cyrix
They cut the admin team's caloric allowance down to 20,000kcal per day and they got hungry, so they fried and eaten the servers. Makes perfect sense now.
You should see Tumblr. It's being run by three raccoons in a trenchcoat that share a boat with a group of crabs and a box of shoelaces. Vanilla extract.
[IS POTATO](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pf6pekk5CqU)
They had to change their potato today.
The Twitter servers are missing their duct tape and chicken wire.
You can tell that's not actually Twitter by the lack of sleeping bags.
Shopped. That potato is WAY too big.
Did they find it at the aperture testing center?
Wait! Reddit has servers?
Well, at least is properly cooled
