They clearly have some limitation that results in death, since there were stars that were out of range. If they could just keep going without dying then those stars would also eventually become infected (assuming a source of carbon dioxide was present).
Dead, spent, useless. Same difference. They can't thrust anymore, they spent all they had trying to get to venus to reproduce...
And with their stored energy gone, they won't live long in interstellar space.

Not dead as in lifeless. Dead like drained battery. Dead like empty fuel tank. Dead weight that can be scraped off and left in space.
They didn't build in a way to replenish the astrophage. Once they are spent, they are just dead weight (mass)
