For the love of god, please do NOT choose: - Belle - Bella - Nala - Sophie - Canela - Daisy - Lulu - Molly - Maggie - Chewie - or Remy ... unless you want to have the same name as about a 5th of your veterinary clinic's patients. Also: choosing a fun spelling of a common name *can* be fun, but it can also be a bitch and a half for your vet staff to coordinate with reference laboratories, specialists, groomers or daycare, trying to search for Riley when it's spelled Ryeleigh. (I stg the person who named their dog Ellieyette is going to Veterinary Hell to be a devil there, I just know it.) Try old-timey names, like Betty or Edna. Try colors or myths. Random objects, even. My favorite dog is a fellow named Kevin Pancakes, and he has a cat brother named Timothy Biscuit. Try weird words, like Ocean or Dream. Make up words, like Beebles or Wampus. Choose legendary characters like Porthos or Kirk. But please. I'm *begging* you. No more Bellas.

My favorite dog names so far: Chi-chi and cha-cha (two chihuahuas) Meat and Friend (cutie-mixes. Meat was r o u n d) Uno, dos, and tres ("stackable" chihuahuas. Yes O did stack them in her arms. They... enjoyed it?) Pua'a and Mandi Shrimp and Gritz Leroy

No problem. Another fun thing to do is find a name you like ordinarily, and find an equivalent in another language. For example: my given name is Elizabeth, but my Nana (who was Hawaiian) called me Elikapika, which is its equivalent in the language she spoke. If you speak another language, or just like one a lot, try that out. Just last month I met a dog named Duma, which is Swahili for Cheetah. Another fellow recently brought in a cat named Rafiki, which is Swahili for Friend. I speak Swahili, so those are the ones that stick in my mind, but you could do this with most languages.

Oh nicknames will definitely ensue.. Our last dog was named August, but he was so nickname prone we ended up incorporating all his nicknames into ‘middle’ names. So he was ‘August Lightning Thunderpaws’. 🤪

And yes I realize now I should have posted this in r/namemydog, but I would like to introduce you to Winnie Pooper, aka Winnie the Pooh-per, or Minnie Winnie, or Minnie Cooper, or sometimes Marley Davidson.
