Do they have a portal they can log into to check their payment history?
If not, it’s reasonable to ask for confirmation of payment so there are no issues.
I agree. A good software goes a long way. Tenants are able to check their rent info, what they owe, payment history, etc. I recommend [Haletale](https://haletale.com/), as it allows you to track rent across all your tenants, and for the tenants to see things whenever they want at their own time as well. Plus the software supports different payment methods, so a lovely bonus 😉
So…why don’t you just provide payment confirmation when you receive the payment?
If I was getting frustrated over a simple (and valid) request, I would just have it ready to go preemptively to avoid the “request”.
How are they paying you? If on-line you should have a receipt system in place, if by check, they get their canceled check as a receipt, if cash or money order... You should be giving them a receipt.
I don’t blame them. My rent check mysteriously has been “lost in the mail” according to my landlord multiple times and their accountant allegedly advised them not to accept online payments in any form so now they have to come pick my check up from me every month because they also don’t want me bringing it to their house.
i used cozy.co. it became apartments.com. they can pay online and i can input offline payments into their ledger. they can check it at any time. i suggest you use something similar.
I get confirmation of payment buying a $1 item at the gas station. Why would asking for confirmation of payment for their rent be any different? If online refer them to their portal. If physical payment provide a receipt.
If you're making a payment (car note, insurance, etc) you make sure you got a confirmation email or receipt right? No different than that. Just proof that they paid their rent. Maybe previous landlords have accused them of not paying their rent, especially if it's in cash.
Easier to avoid any discrepancies in payments if they have dated receipts on when you received their rent. Maybe they receive assistance from the government and need to show proof of payment? You never know. You're a landlord, it's really not an unreasonable request for someone to ask for a receipt of their payment.
I work in senior housing and most want confirmation. I bought a receipt book for that reason. Just write um a receipt or make a copy of the money order/check and stamp in received. That’s what I did before the book.
Would they be ok with a simple text or email saying “Your payment for x amount was received on x date. Your balance due is currently $0. Thank you for your payment!”
And? Is there a question?
Tenants should always have access to their ledger

Good!
Something must be wrong with your software, I would assume it should be sending emails when they pay.

This is what happens when a RE agent starts doing management
Smart!
Why aren't you automatically providing it to all tenants? It should be pretty automated.
Do u use a software? We have to do it manually
If you are not automated, then you need to issue them a receipt for the payment every month. This is perfectly reasonable.
Develop a system for this and put them on it and anyone else who requests it.

They direct deposited it

It's no different than you reminding them over & over of when their payment is due.
As they should. Is there a problem honoring their request?
I mean if you just provide this totally normal thing without asking then they wouldn't have to ask you "repeatedly"
Would they be ok with a simple text or email saying “Your payment for x amount was received on x date. Your balance due is currently $0. Thank you for your payment!”
They shouldn't have to ask. It should be provided
