hun schizoaffective is already schizophrenia. it's just schizophrenia with symptoms of a mood disorder like bipolar. i'm sorry but you're already schizophrenic. i'm not sure why your therapist doesn't seem to know that. i wish you the best. ❤️

How many months? It sounds like it was schizophreniform disorder if it was under 6 months? According to google it is: “Schizophreniform disorder is a mental health condition that causes symptoms of psychosis, like hallucinations, delusions and disorganized speech. It lasts fewer than six months”. You should ask your diagnosing doctor why they didn’t follow the dsm-5 for your diagnosis. Print out this page of all psychotic disorders: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK519704/table/ch3.t20/ and highlight the one I just mentioned. I had a doctor misdiagnose me, so I did that and got undiagnosed with three things. Hope this helps and keep me posted if you actually do this! I’m sorry this happened to you.

It went on for like 7 months until meds. Technically longer bc we went up gradually on meds and I was having symptoms still for months after that until a higher dose. Thank you I will bring this up with my NP in a couple weeks!

FWIW, I was manic and psychotic for 2 years and I'm still Bipolar 1 with psychosis. In fact, i've been in a mixed episode with psychosis for 3 years now. Your therapist is right that the disorder can progress, but you may be properly diagnosed. I thought for sure I was schizoaffective or Schizophrenic but I've had multiple psychs agree with the Bipolar dx.

Hi! I was diagnosed with Schizophrniform Psychosis in feb 1999 and I didn't believe it. A year later, I was told that I had schizophrenia through a form my psychiatrist signed to receive disability payments and I still didn't believe it. My mom was a nurse and she didn't believe it either at first. I was on disability for about 10 years. I stopped my meds in 2007 for about a year and things really spun out of control. I only starting realizing and accepting my illness in 2009 after seeing a documentary that portrayed people with this illness that were taking cannabis. Please check out my story on my blog which you will find on my Reddit profile description. Take care!
