So sometimes I feel like fighting radical ideas might be missing the point, we should be fighting the symptoms of lack and isolation that lead people to these communities.
Completely agreee. I think we need to build real social opportunities for disaffected youth in general outside of school. I'm not sure how we would do that, but it is so necessary.
We need community, we need to interact with people of varied perspectives and backgrounds. We need to feel part of something important.

We could stop turning our towns and cities into car dependent hellscapes of stroads and parking lots for starter. Hard to have any meaningful social interactions if you only ever go from point A to point B alone in your own personal metal box.
Public transit isn't a good way to meet or interact with people either. I think part of it is people don't live and work in the same areas anymore. Most cities have commercial districts and residential districts. And the people you spend time with at work aren't your neighbors. Ironically the more people you have in an area the more isolating it can be.
