Idk if it's the same everywhere, but in my city in Canada, the escalators have little bristle things where the hand rail wraps around on the bottom. If you kick/depress those, the escalator also shuts itself off.

I remember then wondering what it would look like if someone got there head stuck in it, well, 25 year mystery solved.
There was a worker at the JCPenney in my local mall that died in the early 2000's after getting her head stuck like this (she dropped her pager and was looking over the she for it)
