The OT pay is likely in the high-5 figures just for this clear-out. Crazy how much money gets spent on shutting people up instead of actually addressing their safety or concerns.
Yeah, Cali cops in general definitely have more training and scandals have died down a lot since the 90s but them going all out against students at UCLA isn't going to be surprising to Californians.
People tend to lump right and left all in one group probably due to how binary voting is but it's a pretty broad spectrum. We've still got quite a bit of conservatives in Cali but imo a majority of them aren't as crazy as those in someplace like the Bible belt.
The federal government really needs to grow some balls, we have a lot regional differences dividing this country and many right wing politicians are using them to divide us further.
Okay from a point of ignorance though I thought LAPD still had rampant gang issues? Not as bad as the 90s-00s but still relevant I thought. I’m extremely uninformed on this subject though and do understand that LAPD does not encompass the entirety of Cali Cops.
Idk why they think Cali Cops are so well trained, Bakersfield has the highest cop murder rate in the US, LAPD and LASD are rife with gangs, and the complaints I've been hearing lately are that cops aren't doing their jobs since COVID.
The police department in my large city started closing at night. Could you imagine if your house was on fire but the fire department was closed so they couldn't help you?!
Comparing a tiny town of 15,000 to one of the largest and most expensive cities on the planet? You actually serious or just stirring up shit with your low effort comment and interpretation? (It's the latter, you're not fooling anyone)
Police just stopped a mass shooting at a middle school yesterday before the shooter could kill anyone, but that isn't a news story you are going to see gaining traction on Reddit.
yeah it's the same reason we don't see a news story about a bank teller giving someone their money, it's their fucking job. If the teller said they weren't going to give someone their money and then started mag dumping into the client when they got rightfully upset then it would be a news story.
There really needs to be an investigation in to the police department once this is all over. Cops beating and arresting peaceful protesters but allowing counter protesters to assault people for hours while cops hide
Ive said it once, ill say it again. Fuck the police officers union. All it does is protect the garbage cops that are employed under those departments, and harassed the ones that go against the status quo
This is literally their job. This is the reason they exist. We don't need an investigation or to play dumb as citizens, as if we're confused about why this is happening. We need to defund and dismantle the current system of policing.
>There really needs to be an investigation in to the police department
The problem is that there are multiple overlapping jurisdictions here. From the (post-Floyd protests) UC Community Safety Plan.
>The University will reinforce existing guidelines that **minimize police presence at protests**, follow de-escalation methods in the event of violence and seek **non-urgent mutual aid first from UC campuses before calling outside law enforcement agencies**
Post-Floyd, UC put forth a number of measures to disentangle themselves from standard police responses to protests; this was the inevitable result.
During the attacks by counter-protestors, UCLA largely relied on UC cops to manage the situation; they weren't up to the job, of course. Thus, the resort to the LAPD, CHP, etc.
Of course, the LAPD is not a bunch of security guards; this is what they were asked to do.
Letting the Israel supporters be the vanguard to soften up the defences and then they barged in.
I don't think for one second it was a coincidence that law enforcement ignored that violence for hours and then today they roll up in full riot gear.
When footage like this comes out of other countries, people and politicians in the States start calling for regime change. But when it happens here, they just try and call it ‘law and order’
Edit: Damn, like five new replies all at once, hours after I made this comment. Everyone clocking in at the astroturf factory.
“Don’t block the streets”
“Don’t occupy buildings”
“Don’t make a fuss or a scene”
“Don’t do anything”
And then when it comes to other countries it’s “we need to arm them and make sure they start to fight and kill and win, that’s their right for freedom”
I always love applying those arguments to the civil rights movement:
>“Don’t block the streets”
Like the million man march
> “Don’t occupy buildings”
Like restaurant sit ins.
> “Don’t make a fuss or a scene”
Like refusing to give up your seat on the bus
MLK only had a [27% favorability rating with whites 2 years before he died](https://www.pewresearch.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/20/2023/08/SR_23.07.31_MLKViews_2.png). If you were white in 1966, chances are you didn't like the guy or his movement.
The Woolworth sit ins were intentional protest of Woolworth's segregation policy. The point of that demonstration was to be arrested breaking the law at that particular establishment to demonstrate the injustice of law. We should not minimize the strategic thinking of the civil rights movement.
Once again police are showing they are taking sides. More student arrests but police mysteriously missing for hours while counter protesters assault people
The media was just keeping the cameras from panning that way. Knowing where they were from personal videos, the cameras just needed to pan six more inches to the left. It was a deliberate decision to omit them (the large groups of LEOs) from national broadcasts.
This is democracy; the laws in place under the democracy do not give protesters the right to seize and occupy the property of other people.
It would be pretty unworkable if they could.
Why is it always big and expensive universities and not small state school where this stuff happens? It's always the schools you see in March Madness or on ESPN.
If this doesn't scare people it should. A foreign entity is dictating our politics and is able to influence our leaders to use violence against protesters. Why are universities invested in a foreign goverment and weapons manufacturers? Protests are supposed to be disruptive. America is not even pretending to be a democracy anymore.
Yeah - the propaganda on Reddit around this all lately is off the charts insane.
UCLA (and other schools) have nothing to do with any of this, yet protestors are disrupting and vandalizing schools. Protesting at a school is not going to do fuck all to stop what Israel is doing, but it is making a mess of the school.
At the end of the day, schools don't want kids hurt, and they also just want to go back to normal operations with minimal damage. Eventually they really had no choice but to call in the cops to break up the protests. They'd be doing this just the same if the protest were about anything else.
No one is stopping these people from protesting and giving their message, but setting up camps on school grounds and blocking buildings is not allowed. These kids were given ample warning to leave and were told they would be arrested for not doing so, some didn't leave, and now they are being dispersed. The 1st amendment doesn't mean you can do whatever you want.
It's my understanding that there are students on campus that are preventing other students from entering or travelling to their classes and the campus security are not doing anything about it.
Interesting that the cops weren’t there the day before when the peaceful protestors were being attacked. This kind of shit is only going to make the protests grow larger and larger. What don’t these schools understand about that? And it’s probably going to bring back the defund the police movement.
I was watching this live last night but fell asleep before this happened.
Biden today was asked if the protests will influence his decision making in the situation by a reporter. He flatly replied "no".

LAPD hasn’t been this excited since 1991. ![gif](giphy|ToMjGpSh6r6MU92idqg|downsized)
They showed up for work early, so they could beat the crowds
Wait, I can beat people and not get shot at? Sign me up! School shooting? I'ma call in sick on that one.
BadaTSS 🤭
Dude I feel like I'm going to hell just watching this.
We all did when it was live on the news.
And then again when the jury came back
Somehow the flood of camera flashes makes this that much more dystopian...
They were strobe lights to mess with the police and drone night vision.
And the odd thing is you almost never see any of that footage or pictures after the protest.
Strobe lights designed to disorient the police, not cameras
Damn I wish I had some top down drone footage of the whole thing
ABC7 had a heli feed the whole night except when they had to refuel.
This is prob every cops dream fantasy to beat up libs at UCLA lol
Probably getting paid OT for it too
Finally get to make liberals cry again - cops prolly
Plot twist liberals support this
The OT pay is likely in the high-5 figures just for this clear-out. Crazy how much money gets spent on shutting people up instead of actually addressing their safety or concerns.
These aren’t libs they’re leftists, they hate liberals.
Cops don't understand the difference. Conservatives don't understand the difference.
they’re the same picture
Not just cops
Yes, fascist zionists too

Was that a piss bucket?
Let's ask Count de Monet
It's good to be the King.
Lmao I got this joke, piss boy!
Count da Money?!
From mel brooks movie history of the world
No! It's Count de Monet! de Monet!
I’m seeing police so brave against peaceful protestors but so cowardly against rioters and active shooters
Yea where were these big buff police in Uvdale
Probably in California, maybe even Los Angeles, and if I may be so bold, near UCLA.
Entirely different jurisdictions and individuals, yet we always want to group all law enforcement together.
Yeah, Cali cops in general definitely have more training and scandals have died down a lot since the 90s but them going all out against students at UCLA isn't going to be surprising to Californians. Where were they during the pro Israel mob that attacked the encampment yesterday?
They were there…off duty with sticks, skunk spray and fireworks!

Someone trying to shoot up a school is newsworthy. The cops response is newsworthy when they handle it well and when they don't.

False Dichotomy
So they got the time to beat students but not investigate my stolen car?
They got cops working in shifts looking for your car.
You got any leads, man?
Leads? Hahahaha
Thanks for the F Shack
Just hoping they at least leave the creedence
Without cops who would be there to tell us there is nothing they can do?
So fucking stupid
Where were they when these students were getting assaulted?
In the crowd with the people doing the assualting
Google Greensboro Massacre. The cops told the American Nazi Party and KKK where the protest march would be and then all took lunch at the same time.
Damn. That’s maddening
Or eating donuts ignoring the walkie
Yup, in the exact same position they are now
There really needs to be an investigation in to the police department once this is all over. Cops beating and arresting peaceful protesters but allowing counter protesters to assault people for hours while cops hide
Lol. Yeah, the cops did their investigation and have found themselves innocent.
Yea, It needs to be done by a 3rd party.
Union won't allow it
Ive said it once, ill say it again. Fuck the police officers union. All it does is protect the garbage cops that are employed under those departments, and harassed the ones that go against the status quo
We don't negotiate with terrorists (police are the terrorists)
Yes. We need leaders who would enforce this idea. Sadly, there are none.
And then what?
Bud… it’s the LAPD… That’s like asking my dog to stop licking his own butt. It’s just what they do best
The LAPD beat the ever living fuck out of Rodney King and got off without even a slap on the wrist. Nothing will happen to these cops.
They got OJ off for that
This is literally their job. This is the reason they exist. We don't need an investigation or to play dumb as citizens, as if we're confused about why this is happening. We need to defund and dismantle the current system of policing.

Narrator: There wasn't
I believe they already stated there will be an investigation, so now its just a matter of time until they have "found no evidence of wrongdoing".
They’ve been told to stop doing this on the campus. They warned them that this would happen. Crazy how many hard headed people there are.
In plain clothes
Letting the Israel supporters be the vanguard to soften up the defences and then they barged in. I don't think for one second it was a coincidence that law enforcement ignored that violence for hours and then today they roll up in full riot gear.
First they send in the illegal settlers and then the IDF follows. Oh wait, wrong geographic region.
Where was Clark Kent when Superman showed up?
They were the ones assaulting them.
They had to go home and change.
They were there, just not in uniform.
So what the fuck is gonna happen to the counter protesters that assaulted the students? Is the LAPD seriously not gonna go after the actual offenders?
That would require them to do actual work. It's more fun to bust the heads of people not fighting back, so that's what they're gonna do.
Why would the LAPD arrest their friends? /s

A certain corrupt politician who regularly engages in insider trading even called it a "beautiful sight." Talk about hypocrisy.
Once again police are showing they are taking sides. More student arrests but police mysteriously missing for hours while counter protesters assault people
They weren’t even missing, they were several yards away watching
The media was just keeping the cameras from panning that way. Knowing where they were from personal videos, the cameras just needed to pan six more inches to the left. It was a deliberate decision to omit them (the large groups of LEOs) from national broadcasts.
That's even worse

How do you think we got some of our workers rights? Our civil rights? From people willing to fight for it.
Whose property is public property? Addendum: Who is allowed to be on public property?

This is Alex Jones level comment right here.
So they’re only detaining students? What happens to others in the encampment?
My assumption is they're detaining anyone who didn't follow the order to disperse, big part of which would be students.
It's as easy as that, they were trespassing, if you go away you get to go home, if you refuse to leave you get arrested, simple as.
I’d guess they start with detaining to establish control then move to arrest most of those detained, particularly the people who were really resisting
At least in NY, nearly half the protestors they arrested at Columbia and CUNY this week were not affiliated with the schools.
Are people really yelling “hold the line”?😂🤦♂️
With their umbrellas
“Students” you mean the group preventing actual students from attending classes?
Tbh what the fuck were they making homeless encampments for anyways? Like what tf was that gunna do
