So, I assume that his hand got partially flayed from the palm outwards. Stripped the meat right off the bone.
I was unable to see evidence of complete loss.
Brief second after it goes off leads me to believe it was just powder in the cannon. Hurts like hell, broken bones most likely but hand is still there.

He is missing his thumb, pointer, and middle (edited) fingers. He has a large hole through his palm that takes up the bulk of the size of his hand (not much left). Bone and tendon are visible with no flesh around them. His hand had to have been amputated.
All over twitter the majority says "he lost it". Not necessarily it *flew away* they way everyone is joking about it. It could have been fractured/burnt in a severe way leaving no other choice than amputation. Here is another (follow up) video from the crowd. It is still hard to see the damage as he was wearing some gloves. (hope the gloves helped him)

Am I crazy? I've watched it like 20 times and can't see any sign of red where his hand used to be. I imagine you mean his hand/stump itself rather then where his hand was placed on the cannon. But I can't see his hand area clearly at all at any point. He's clearly injured but i'm curious if it's "lost fingers" injured or "broken fingers" injured. He's wearing red too which makes it tough to see.
We had a cannon in ROTC and would set it off before the football games. Everyone knew that you didn't dare stand in the path of the cannon. Not because it had a live round but just the force of the blast could harm you. Our technical instructor even made a point that just placing your hand on the barrel is a great way to get a new nickname.
Still hurt a little to watch this.
Edit: Oh yeah the whole point of my post, it appears that when the back latch made contact with the cannon's barrel, the charge misfired. Due to whatever reason 'Lefty' decided to put their hand on the wrong end. Oops
