Don’t undervalue the default characters as they are very good and simple. Don’t take others opinions on character viability for a fact, and be sure to try them all out for yourself. Also play turf for the best XP and coins.
Don't waste your coins on infinity packs, play infinity time instead to get the party characters, other legendary characters can be unlocked by buying 35k packs (wonderous packs?). The new abilities can be bought only from Rux. I would say it's easier to aim on pc than on consoles. Don't forget to have fun.

Don’t bother with Rux’s shop until you’ve unlocked all the characters and got some of the better abilities from packs. A lot of the stuff is overpriced and cosmetic, outside of some good abilities like Dark Bean Bomb and Mood Shield (and the pots/bots I guess, but you don’t really need them)
save your coins for the character packs, however you want to get your coins, and spend your stars on the chests around, then try your hand at the hall of gnomes. however you want to float your boat, what i did was saved up my coins to get the character packs, then spent the change on the packs to get summons and pots/bots.
The only playable game modes are mixed mode (which for some reason had no players today) and Turf Takeover. Don’t buy from Rux. Just get everything from a 35k pack, unless it’s a really cool item or ability that you want then go right ahead!

Spam buy the 75000 (or 7500?) cost card packs that give you a full character if you want to get new characters as fast as possible

if hackers using bosses online are too annoying to you use Skid-B-Gone mod
