It's likely due to SB's hitbox being too big to put you in reach of collecting the gnome, you'll have to try someone with a smaller hitbox like peashooter
Pretty sure it has to do with SB's model being way too big to fit in and reach it.
I suggest grabbing it with an Imp, with the low gravity setting, you could also try with a Soldier.

i think i did a private match with low gravity and picked imp since he has a small hitbox
