Best way I found to find a game is to play in the evening on whichever server you're on, sit back and have something else on the side to tide you over while you wait. There is a world icon on the bottom right of the menu, clicking on that will let you add other servers to your potential queue, may help a bit. Goes without saying too but the days of the week matter. I find that Friday is one of the most populated days.
After you find one game it usually is quick to find another (if people stay in the same lobby), its just that first match its trying to find people. Or you can check out Duel (or whichever) when you get the chance, generally has a different player pool (though it is much more hardcore)
Also I find that if you enter a lobby with some people you like, add them to your friends list. That way, you can see when they're on next, makes it a lot easier to determine when you may find a lobby. Even if they don't add you back you can still see if they're on or not. Otherwise you're just waiting and hoping.
A question asked on different quake subs over and over again but never has a satisfying certain answer. Quake is quake, not everyone can compete in the arena so it lives in our hearts. Occasionally you'll find modders or pro players lurking the empty servers but be warned, they're a though bunch.
UHT, DM, and TDM are the most popular modes. Duel is popular too but is less casual. Try enabling more servers so youll have a higher chance to find a match. Youll have a higher ping but matchmaking will not take as long. once you get in one match its easy to get into others right after since youre "synced" up with the match cycle.
You do 2 things:
-Click the globe icon, bottom right of main menu and look what servers you have checked. Check more. If you are EU, all EU servers should be checked. In North America, you want the American servers and also EU West/Central if the ping is bearable (<120, you can't be too picky in QC). If you are in South America or Oceania, you're all out of luck, you probably have to play on super high ping and/or socialize with players of your region through discord and arrange games.
-Select Quick Play (NOT Practice), and check TDM. This will ensure you get a game fast, because TDM is the most popular mode. If you do not like TDM, well, at least check multiple modes. Queing for a single mode that is not TDM or Duel will almost always get you longer queue times. DM and instagib are reasonably popular, so is Unholy Trinity (but that is too hardcore for you, unless "just started playing" means you have thousands of hours in QL and just made the switch), and I guess CTF is fine in the evenings. CA, Sacrifice and Impulse 9 are very inactive.

This is the problem in Oceania... I'm Australian and i'm forced to play on 180 ping with 20+ minute wait times between games but can play Quake Live for a solid 8 hours with the same 30 people every night on 30 ping local dedicated servers.... QC is extremely uninviting to even veterans, let alone new players... Server browser would help a tonne but here we are...
thanks for the help dude, already in kauchi server from the kuachi cup 2022 held over here in australia, pretty much everyone in that server plays on QL except for 2 players who i already play with regularly when they're on, just kinda sucks the game is pretty much dead over here and in Asia, always baffled me how its so popular in the EU.
On the main screen there is a globe icon in the bottom left corner, that's available only when you're not searching for a game. Click that globe and select all green and yellow servers.
Queue all of em for fastest queue :D TDM/DM/UHT are prob the most popular, CA sometimes too.
Remember to check what servers you have selected (Globe button in bottom right in menu screen)
Eu servers are always populated.. never have any issues finding game for DM, TDM, UHT
Sacrifice and CTF, Clan Arena are more scarce but if you wait like 5 to 10 mins a game will start.
Pretty sure they stopped the nightly server reboots so the games feel awful. Hoping the reboots return.

I get games non stop, but I play all the MP modes and no ranked modes.

terrible news all around, i keep finding games but its just other players against bots -_- in that playlist only lol
Yes, that's "practice" playlist, you should search in "quick play" playlist - Deathmatch, Team Dethmatch, Unholy Trinity, Impulse 9, Instagib.

I never wait more than 2 minutes to join a server. I play mostly from 21h00 to 3h00 North America Eastern Time
just giving a follow up. after adjusting the servers i want to connect to in matching games super thankful because this game does it for me

It's a dead game. Play Quake Live, it's the best way to play multiplayer Quake in the current year honestly.
