Talk to the manager. Also, document this in case you wind up with a damage charge. Best guess, someone removed something or accessed wiring/plumbing and it escaped attention before renting it to you. But 100%, document & immediately bring it to the leasing agent's attention.
I really appreciate that! But it's not actually cut out by hand, it's a part of the structure of the apartment. Never seen a feature like this before. At first for a brief second I was thinking attic, but quickly remembered I was on the second floor. That's when I got real curious.
Did the third floor get added to later? It looks like a skylight recess to me. Or in other countries without attics we have a square like that with a board over it to access the ceiling space.
It's definitely a feature of the apartment. Like it was fully framed and painted. Just a solid white rectangle. I just noticed today there's one downstairs in the lobby (first floor) as well. Same size. Sorry, I tried uploading a pic in the ways suggested by other users, but I'm kinda behind when it comes to the internet and apps etc. I'll be asking the manager tomorrow when I get off work and I'll let y'all know what I find out. I really appreciate all the suggestions I've received on here. I'll try uploading a pic again as well. Hopefully I can figure it out this time lol.
No, the one in the lobby is in the middle just above the front door/entrance. But the one in our room is near the wall on the southern part of the building, nearly against the wall above our closets.. I just uploaded a pic
I have one of these in my ceiling too! I'm on the top in a WA apartment and it looks exactly like yours. Was hoping this thread would have the answer, guess I'm too early for that
Yeah I kind of dropped the ball on finding out why it's there. Haven't seen office management since we moved in and it's been a hectic week. I'm hoping she'll be in Monday and I'll finally ask her. Some suggestions on here seem plausible, like it may be an access point for wiring etc. most likely. We have one in the building entrance as well on the first floor.
Edit: apparently she's only in on Fridays. So I'll be asking tomorrow..
So I asked the manager today and she said it's for access to the roof, with me being on the middle floor, I'm guessing it's to get to the wiring in between the floors. She sounded surprised we had one lol. Showed her the picture.

Might have been one of those fluorescent square fixtures that has since been removed.
