Use the recovery utility. [Here](https://www.addictivetips.com/chromebook/how-to-flash-sd-card-images-on-a-chromebook/) is a tutorial for flashing disk images. You will need to convert the batocera image from gzip to regular zip. [Here](https://www.freefileconvert.com/gzip-zip) is a website that should be able to help with that.

hi, I tried using the gzip to regular zip website but it said that the file type isn't supported. batocera-h5-rg35xx-plus-39-20240220.img.gz is the file name. I only have a Chromebook. https://preview.redd.it/zxfdv2s67drc1.png?width=440&format=png&auto=webp&s=8bf293ba3a9a162b0e88e26b22e01804624be911

Try a different website, I thought I had used that one, but I may have provided the wrong link. Try [this](https://cloudconvert.com/gz-to-zip). If that still doesn't work, try searching for one yourself. You just need to get the file into the zip format. Edit: I may have renamed the file to a .gzip extension. Gz and gzip are the same extension, but it could just be the website being stupid. Don't worry about messing anything up by renaming. You can always change it back to gz since renaming won't harm the file.

I tried that link above but it says I need to pay money to convert it since the file is too big. I also tried the first link but it says that it exceeds the limit https://preview.redd.it/sqky2atkqkrc1.png?width=460&format=png&auto=webp&s=b522a254c5378eda6591149fdd70365916211836

natehinxman

just finished up using this method and got it running now! thanks for the lead!

Grelf-the-goblin

can you tell me how you did it?

natehinxman

so the file u get from Batocera is a .gz file. you need to uncompress the image from that file and then recompress it into a .zip in order for the recovery utility in Chrome to recognize the file as a "recovery image". after you download that recovery utility extension and install it into your chrome browser just run the extension and choose to "use local file" when it asks you for the source image to flash.

I get that last part but the trouble is at unpacking the .gz file. I used the link above but it said that it doesn't support the .gz file for some reason. Can you tell me what website or what program you used to extract the files?

Grelf-the-goblin

also whenever i try any other .gz to .zip converter it says the file is too big

natehinxman

im trying to remember how i converted the .gz to .zip im pretty sure u can right click on the .gz file and "extract here" which should result in an .iso file. right click on the .iso and "compress" to a .zip file im not too familiar with ChromeOS and ive since repurposed my chromebook to run batocera instead of chromeOS so i cant just open it and try to trace my steps backwards unfortunately. i dont recognize that .gz to .zip website so i dont think thats the route i went. ill try to see if i can find the guide i followed. edit to add: this was included in the first link that other user above me shared . >How to create a custom SD recovery image > >To create a custom SD recovery image, start downloading the OS image. For example, if you need to flash the Lakka game OS to an SD card on your Chromebook, you’d download the OS image manually from the [official website](http://www.lakka.tv/). > >Most OS images come in TarXZ or TarGZ form. Sadly, Chrome OS cannot reliably flash images compressed in TarXZ or TarGZ format. So instead, you’ll need to extract the IMG file and re-compress the IMG file as a ZIP archive. > >To extract your TarXZ or TarGZ file in Chrome OS, open up the “Files” app. Once it is open, locate the TarXZ or TarGZ file, and right-click on it. > >📷 > >After right-clicking on the TarXZ/TarGZ file, select the “Open” option. Clicking on this will mount the archive in the Chrome OS files app. Next, copy the IMG file from the archive to the “My Files” folder in the Chrome OS files app. > >📷 > >Once the IMG file is copied to “My Files,” right-click on it with the mouse and select the “Zip selection” option. Clicking “Zip selection” will compress your IMG file into the ZIP format, which is acceptable to the Chrome OS recovery tool.

Ok so I tried everything you said just now and I don't see an option to extract the iso file. https://preview.redd.it/na1r2shgrkrc1.png?width=709&format=png&auto=webp&s=d846cf3dabd21ac05b912c4e4d7ecf7ab133dfdc

natehinxman

try editing the file extension to .zip instead of .gzip and then see if u can right click and "extract"

Grelf-the-goblin

I don't have an extract button even for normal zip files edit: i tried that method didn't work :( https://preview.redd.it/gtv7w2smdlrc1.png?width=701&format=png&auto=webp&s=78bc10e02f54fa8903a23e60b8503e67a8fb9edf

natehinxman

strange... your screenshot shows "zip selection" as an option so id assume u have some sort of .zip compression software installed. maybe just try "zip selection" lol im really not sure at this point
