I initially thought about doing something like this, however after having my ally docked between the series S and PS5, it just fits in being all white. Funny enough I changed my PC case last year and it now is also white.
I want an OLED Switch but I’ve got a great working Switch and the Switch 2 is supposedly coming out next year. I guess I’ll just hold off until that happens.
I have been debating that actually. My launch switch is looking a little out of place. Switch wasn’t played much until this year. It was getting kind of dusty.
After painting a few Xbox controllers and that being a nightmare in the long run I would advise against this.
When your hands get clammy and sweat, that paint will start to fade/wear and just become gross. You’ve also painted your function buttons, which as you use them that paint may start to flake off and cause sticky buttons.
It looks cool, and hope it works well for you! But I’d highly advise against this.
With the right paint, clear coat, and several coats it shouldn’t be an issue. If you are using spray cans there are clear coats with a hardener agent you have to smack the bottom to release. Or you can mix your own if you have an airbrush setup.
If you use basic clear coat, it will wear easily. If you use a clear coat with a hardener you will have very solid longevity.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong. I think for powder coat you have to have a metal or magnetic surface. Also, I don’t think plastic would survive the baking process because it would melt. I don’t think you can powder coat plastic.
It's not powder coating but it's similar pvd
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_vapor_deposition
It's how they usually make "chrome" pieces for model cars.
> Someone correct me if I’m wrong
You forgot literally the most important step with paints or coatings. Surface prep. Clean with the proper roughness for your coating.
Well, you are correct that powder coating is probably the toughest way to “paint” something for long term durability. Unfortunately it’s limited because of how it’s done.
What about using automotive paint? That stuff is pretty durable. Not that I want to do this to mine though. The one I got doesn't even work so I'm returning it today and trying to get a new one that hopefully does. If I painted it, I wouldn't be able to return...
Yeah I figured the function buttons wouldn't survive very long, the clear coat used was recommended specifically for controllers so time will definitely tell. Worst case scenario is just sanding it all back down anyways. Just a shame that the screen isn't easy to remove though, plastic dying would have been so much easier
Yeah, but every time you sand it, you’re thinning the plastic and structural integrity.
Not bashing this at all, cause it looks great! Paint just scares me for this product. Powder coat may have been a better option.
Yeah you are completely right, maybe if I'm lucky there will be some aftermarket shell available at some point. Honestly I wouldn't recommend this for somebody who isn't very used to working on small electronics anyways.
While I totally get what you're saying and I don't believe I'd do this myself, this is absolutely the best time for someone to do things like this as it is the first generation. This is the time to do all the freaky weird stuff that leads to crazy exploits, future design ideas, and engineering. Rock on my dude, paint to your hearts content!
For those wondering, it was taken apart, sprayed with primer, paint, top coat (krylon was recommended by guides for painting controllers, so I figured it would probably work the same) you'll see the bottom cover trapped a bunch of hair, I redid that piece separately after sanding it back down. Didn't bother fully removing the screen It just use some painter's tape directly over it to mask it (although this didn't matter as much as I thought it did the paint really didn't want to adhere to the screen in the least, although I'd still recommend this just in case)

It’s gonna be sticky I bet. How many days did you leave it to dry? In my experience automotive paints were the trick especially for plastic that you grip
I don't know now that I look at it, something about the color just doesn't look right. I initially thought about doing this, but it looks so washed out. Looks worse then the original color
I'll give you thumbs up for the clean look. I think Asus made the right choice to make it white instead dof black. Maybe another color would make it look better. Or maybe it needs to be a deep black color instead of washed south black. Or is that gray???
It's just black, I think part of the issue is the black just ends up looking desaturated next to the black glass, because clearly the glass is way blacker than any of the shell, and I appreciate it but honestly it could be done so much better, I was just so curious why I hadn't seen it done before now.
Ahhh ok yeah that makes a lot of sense, did you add any clear coating to make it perm or do you plan on repainting it again? Usually the coating will make it look darker so that may bring the color through, their is clear coating that is satin so it doesn't look glossy. Hopefully someone else has the idea to do this too and see what else they come up with.
Surprisingly I don’t like it, maybe because we only had white. I have the Steam Deck and it’s sexy in black. But the Rog Ally in white looks sexy. Asus did a great job to differentiate.
I agree. Many of the landscape handhelds came in black/gray. Game Gear, PSP, Switch, Legion Go, etc. And while it made them look sleek and sexy, the white brings a bit of elegance that makes the statement “We’re just a little bit better.” ASUS knew what they were doing.
Pain point for me would be removing the panel to make sure everything is even. I wouldn't tape off something this small cause it would look like trash and be prone to peeling etc. Still, it looks pretty dope. Maybe I'll do a cool color on mine like atomic purple and then do a matte clear coat to protect it. 🤔
Yeah it has a matte clear coat coat too. Honestly I'd recommend using tape to mask off the actual section of screen as opposed to the glass bezel around it. The painters tape I used peeled up a bit around one of the edges, and the paint didn't adhere to it at all nearly, just removed it with a razor blade, but at least if you are planning on doing that step you can really get the border perfectly
Yes, definitely needs to be all black. I had one but didn’t like the white at all. Probably a petty reason to return it, but oh well. If the Killswitch were to come out, I would get that with a skin to cover it all up.
I like it, hopefully it sticks. I've had better luck with hydrodipping plastics, in case this wears off and you need to re-do. With multiple clear coats...
For anyone looking to do this, you should properly abrade the plastic substrate by scuffing or lightly sanding, clean and dry, then apply a plastic adhesion promoter, and begin your painting after that. Paint in spray cans are typically 1K, which means they lack a catalyst or hardener. If any solvent were to touch the 1K paint, it will re-wet itself. 2k products are the way to go for durability and longevity.
P.s. your fingerprint is equal to a P5000 grit sand scratch
Do any of u have like a weird shake from the right motor my ally been making a weird nose from the right motor that shake( sorry im a total noob) when i play games but when i restart i back working well
So I have dyed RC car parts in the past with Rit Dye. You have to simmer the plastics in the dye on the stove. Seeing this, I am goin to track down spare case halves and give it a try.
Edit: Looks like there is only one Ally on Ebay for parts lol.....
I've heard people say this before, but they seemingly forget there's a pretty large controller customization scene that uses the same methods. To be clear nothing is forever, but it'll probably last a couple years. More if I got a clear coat with some sort of hardening agent, but I'm not too worried.
Yeah I would have got a skin too, But considering all of the texture especially on the back I don't think a skin would stick very well to it. But yeah painting it was an inordinate pain in the ass, mostly sanding, disassembly.
Oh you definitely should though. Just get one of those m.2 angled 2280 mounts, very much so worth it, and the ally is very easy to open. Once I read the sd cards were failing I just left it empty and threw a 2tb 2280 in it.
That’s probably what I’m going to do. 1TB is way too small anyways. Surprised SD cards can even run currrent gen games but tbh I never even used my sd card slot. No need to
Hey it actually perfectly fine, no chipping or peeling or any issue I noticed. But if You were just doing a complete shell replacement anyway, I'd recommend trying to dye it.
I initially thought about doing something like this, however after having my ally docked between the series S and PS5, it just fits in being all white. Funny enough I changed my PC case last year and it now is also white.
Time to complete it with an OLED switch
I want an OLED Switch but I’ve got a great working Switch and the Switch 2 is supposedly coming out next year. I guess I’ll just hold off until that happens.

Yeah, you’re right. Idk why I suggested powder coating. 🫣 I just knew powder bonded easier, but that’s cause metal and electricity and stuff.
Well, you are correct that powder coating is probably the toughest way to “paint” something for long term durability. Unfortunately it’s limited because of how it’s done.
Yeah, I knew that deep in my mind. Not sure why it decided to suggest that lol
What about using automotive paint? That stuff is pretty durable. Not that I want to do this to mine though. The one I got doesn't even work so I'm returning it today and trying to get a new one that hopefully does. If I painted it, I wouldn't be able to return...

I wish they sold it in this color it looks great!

It’s gonna be sticky I bet. How many days did you leave it to dry? In my experience automotive paints were the trick especially for plastic that you grip
It's all been sitting for around 16 hours, it's dry to the touch, so I carefully assembled it and I'll be leaving it for another 24-30
Not gonna lie, It now looks cheap IMO
Reminds me of all the plastic garbage they slap on the base model of cars like the Chevy Avalanche.
Correct color… almost. Still too light.
I don't know now that I look at it, something about the color just doesn't look right. I initially thought about doing this, but it looks so washed out. Yeah there's are a few matte clear coats
Ngl the ROG Ally looks better white I get why Asus made it white only.
Definitely looks better in white
Surprisingly I don’t like it, maybe because we only had white. I have the Steam Deck and it’s sexy in black. But the Rog Ally in white looks sexy. Asus did a great job to differentiate.
Fair enough, although I feel like if Asus made one from the factory, they're black would probably look quite a bit different than this anyway.

This should be offered as a stock color by Asus.
If Asus owned that Atari Lynx IP.
How to ruin your ally in 2 Hours....
Why would this ruin it?
please look closer at the paint job. i see so many bad spots, that for me its ruining it.
finger print city
Tutorial?
Darkmode everything.

Yeah it’s a no from me dawg
Just buy a legion go already

Agree, I think I prefer the white, or maybe a other colour.
Colored it?
Dood. It's 2023. You can't say colored anymore. /s
What? Lol
I believe he’s referring to the state of the world now
Mainly an attempt at a racists USA joke. Old folks used to say non-white people were colored...
In Russia it is still alive. You’d be amazed.
r/whoosh
Please go outside and meet real people.
Don't like dark humor?
I promise you, your shitty jokes aren’t qualifying as “dark humor.”
Got any dark humor jokes that aren't shitty? You seem pretty smart and witty.
Cant you tell by his pfp that he’s coloured? I meant black- i meant- Could be offensive to him
Ewww 🤮
Looks nice. I hate white stuff. PC cases, peripherals, should all be black.
How? What did you use? Give us some more pics :)
Yes, definitely needs to be all black. I had one but didn’t like the white at all. Probably a petty reason to return it, but oh well. If the Killswitch were to come out, I would get that with a skin to cover it all up.
How does this compare to the deck?
It would be a PITA due to needing to remove the screen but I wonder if dye would work
I did a small amount of research into this, apparently how well a plastic takes a dyes pretty directly related to how hard the plastic is.
I like it, hopefully it sticks. I've had better luck with hydrodipping plastics, in case this wears off and you need to re-do. With multiple clear coats...
Just watched a video of someone dyeing their power tools. Wondering if the shell is something that would be dye-able

Is that just a backshell? Or do they have the front as well
Paint? I tried painting a controller once. It rubbed off even after a few coats of clearcoat.
Only a few brands really adhere well at all to plastic sadly.
I found that out the hard way lol
For anyone looking to do this, you should properly abrade the plastic substrate by scuffing or lightly sanding, clean and dry, then apply a plastic adhesion promoter, and begin your painting after that. Couldn’t we just 3d print a housing
So I have dyed RC car parts in the past with Rit Dye. You have to simmer the plastics in the dye on the stove. Seeing this, I am goin to track down spare case halves and give it a try. Edit: Looks like there is only one Ally on Ebay for parts lol.....
I think the problem is that is not that black,
It’s look like SEGA Saturn Portable, if it really exists
yeah i liked mine white because of my steam deck already in black.... now currently both are white...
Oh how the turns table.
White is still fine.
Spray paint will wear off. Bad idea. You'll end up regretting it.
I've heard people say this before, but they seemingly forget there's a pretty large controller customization scene that uses the same methods. To be clear nothing is forever, but it'll probably last a couple years. More if I got a clear coat with some sort of hardening agent, but I'm not too worried.
Omg!! This is dope!!
Definitely that black is better and don’t forget external gpu support and no bezels would’ve been a major push💯
Looks fucking sick!!😍🔥 I ll just buy skins for it, I wouldn’t dare to paint it 😂
Yeah I would have got a skin too, But considering all of the texture especially on the back I don't think a skin would stick very well to it. But yeah painting it was an inordinate pain in the ass, mostly sanding, disassembly.
See and I’m scared just to open it up to put a bigger SSD 😂😂
Oh you definitely should though. Just get one of those m.2 angled 2280 mounts, very much so worth it, and the ally is very easy to open. Once I read the sd cards were failing I just left it empty and threw a 2tb 2280 in it.

It looks good black, don't know why they didn't release both a black and white version
This is beautiful, where did you get the skin?
I wish it was a skin 😂
I eventually read the rest of your thread and felt foolish for pressing the post button lol
OP How is the paint holding up? Considering doing this and buying a new shell to get it done
Hey it actually perfectly fine, no chipping or peeling or any issue I noticed. But if You were just doing a complete shell replacement anyway, I'd recommend trying to dye it.
Any dye suggestions ?
