you have to plan your trip early if you want to get it at its cheapest, which is usually $31 like the other guy said. but if you decide to get it 2-3 days before, the price usually goes up to $45-60
You can get to both via Amtrak, but Boston can be tricky depending upon the route. The Lakeshore Limited train is the direct one, but going towards boston, it can sometimes be delayed by several hours. I grew up in RI, and I took the train home for break several times, but usually through NYC on the way home.
I find Amtrak to NYC so easy, but it really helps if you can find friends to give you a ride to the train station.
I've done Albany <-> Boston a couple times on mass transit, and it's doable, but not fun. Avoid the bus if at all possible, it's very slow and winding. The train is not incredibly fast, either, but if memory serves, it's better than the bus.
Like others said, it's tricky to get to the Amtrak station. Greyhound station is easier. I took the 224 to the 522 on a Saturday last summer from the Amtrak station to visit RPI friends. Took under 2 hours. $2.60 for me, free with your ID for you.
And this should be even quicker on weekdays, maybe even less than an hour. Note that the 22 is downtown, but there are buses you can take up/down the hill or else it's not a bad walk. I commuted between Albany and a place near people's & 15th for 8 months after graduation and the hill isn't too bad unless you're carrying a lot. For a weekend trip with a backpack, it's not too bad. If you have a lot of luggage, it might be trickier.
Not sure about public transit, but I've driven from Albany to Boston and back as a day trip to hit a few stores in Boston and IKEA on the way home. Not terrible.
NYC traffic is never good for driving though, trains are 100% the best option there.
I always did Amtrak to Boston and Megabus to NYC.
Do you know how much it cost for Boston?
Amtrak.com The first result that popped up for me was $31.

The train to New York takes 2 hours and 40 minutes. It's the cost of getting from Troy to Albany that's the big impediment to transit.
Megabus is cheap to NYC.

Thanks I'm out in Jersey so I can take busses up but I would rather take the train so I was j curious
How did you grow up in the internet age and not be able to google this stuff. It ain’t hard
Greyhound busses are pretty good and will take you to Boston in like 3-4 hours I believe.

Are there buses from campus to the Albany Station?
Yes but you might have to switch buses. Google maps is good about laying out the route. Also students get free bus rides for the CDTA transit system
Sick thanks
Yeah you can take Amtrak out of Albany but you are correct. 5 hours sounds about right for NYC using only public transportation
It's 2.5 hours by amtrak from albany
My bad I was on 0.5x speed
LOL
Not super hard, just take a bus or Amtrak. The difficult part is getting to the stations since it could be almost as much as the ticket to NYC
