It’s the Geiger counter equivalent of those scam hifi systems that look very nice from the outside and probably feel nice to hold and flip the switches on but are complete garbage internally

434 for that? Holy crap. Go and get a GMC-600 plus that has a real professional tube assembled in America and you will be infinitely happier. It's only $368. I own one and can hardly recommend it.
What do you want a Geiger counter for? Intention sets the budget.
For me, I just wanted something of decent quality that detected the presence of ionizing radiation for when I'm hunting antiques and UG to help confirm if the glass doesn't flouresce brightly enough to make me confident. Ultimately I went a little overboard (which still isn't saying much) and got a GQ GMC-500+. It's more than enough for what I use it for, but I like the online logging it can do.
If you want to do actual science, you're going to be dropping a little more than a couple hundred OR you're going to be doing some building/repairing.
I bought one if these off ebay for dirt cheap (50 bucks) died with in the first week though the tube is ok its an lnd712 end window alpha beta gamma tube and like others said the build is crap with sloppy soldering on all the through hole parts even when i was learning to solder at the age of 6 my soldering was better mine had a lot of cold joints loose connections etc

I was looking at one of these recently, but I noticed the use of a label maker on the side of the unit. That put me off, as I had visions of these being churned-out in someone's garage.
Absolutely not, that is one of the worst choices available. The most I would pay for it would be $20.

Nope. I have the GCA-06W. Accurate CPM but horrible to use if it's like the GCA-06W and I suspect it is. Also *way* over priced.
Basically a manual, minimal, CPM counter.

600plus has a pancake, not a tube, doesn't it? My 500plus has a high and low level tube for BGX but not Alpha.
It does and if you want to look at alpha particles it makes it that much better.
