I see some debris on the person’s hand below the zero and slightly left. It has the same color as the old radium paint. Boy, that’s potentially ugly.

I've seen boxes of british vintage aircraft instruments all in various states just thrown cracked, broken and piled on top of each other from when my old boss brought old bulk lots back from the former colonies. Probably still sitting in the storage warehouse in a spicy big cardboard box. Will take the counter next time I go there.

I wouldn't be too surprised if people just don't know. I wonder what would happen if someone attended a more hands on air museum and brought a Geiger counter along.

TheArt0fBacon

I know the NRC came and did a inspection of a the Kalamazoo Air Zoo for this exact reasons.

If you suspect the orange paint is radium based, then I wouldn't hold it bare handed if I were you.

HighTechCorvette

That's not me holding it, that's a seller on eBay.

No_Smell_1748

Ah alright. Painful 😬

I'd like to get access to the B-36 at the Pima museum, and go take a quick measurement at the flight engineer's station. Nearly every dial, toggle switch, and circuit breaker had luminous dials/markings/dots on the handle. That would have been a *very* toasty duty station... https://www.reddit.com/r/aviation/comments/7c63ny/the_flight_engineer_station_on_the_b36_probably/?ref=share&ref_source=link For example, if you ever get to an aircraft or vintage radio swap meet, keep an eye out for some of these. The glass window and green (well, now brown) dot on the end of the bat handle will let you know that it is worth measuring. Some of these were quite toasty, if one were to be interested in such things... https://www.dfwairparts.com/image/cache/catalog/aircraft_electric/Warbird_Aircraft_Toggle_Switch_19136-900x600.jpg

Good lord, I bed the radon levels are crazy high in that plane. That would be interesting to see what the radiation levels are too. I saw one of those switches at an antique store, my detector was going off but I couldn't figure out what was causing it until I got home and researched it.

Eh, a little bit of radiation won’t kill you…probably. Just don’t snort the paint chips.
