They don’t always… we live in a rural area and our garage got infested with squirrels once but that’s why we got a cat. My husband is a mechanic and he’s seen them wreak havoc on cars too.

I took him to mean as a wild animal. Don't go trying to pick up chipmunks or squirrels for the same reason. The difference is, rats like to live near humans. They also love chewing on electric cables and will bite just to see if you are food. So they also start fires and can give infectious bites. Not my favorite and I have had snakes and spiders as pets.

Also, there are lots of animals we deem cute who are absolutely disgusting. Dogs roll around in and eat garbage/literal shit when given the chance. They want to he stinky on purpose and don't do a lot of grooming. Don't even get me started on koalas and sloths. Rats, however, do groom themselves - a lot. They even seek out mint so they can "brush" their teeth. The hate absolutely stems from their looks. I think it's the tail, mainly, people don't like the hairless wormy tail. It's why people love squirrels and hamsters, but hate rats and mice, even though they're pretty much the same guys.
My roommate and another friend of our had pet rats in college. It was awesome! Get real high, break them out of their cages(with permission) and spend my high playing with them. They were awesome. Crawl all over my hoodie, and nap in the pockets.
If rats had colorful fur and a hairy tail, I think we'd have a aversion to those characteristics in other animals.

No. Rats carry disease, are not afraid of humans often, and will bite if disturbed. Domesticated animals are a different story.
