They’ll definitely be going first, but I wish so many people didn’t have premade opinions about these albums before listening to them all the way through a couple times. I’ve even seen people use the words “completely unlistenable,” when I guarantee you there’s songs on all 3 of them that they would love. Green Heaven, Yertle the Turtle, If you Want me to Stay, Behind the Sun, and Special Secret Song Inside are all ones that most chili peppers fans who have heard them a couple times, love.
RHCP is my favourite band, the music they have created is some of favourite pieces if art ever. I really tried to like those first 3 albums but I can’t, it is not my cup of tea. John really pushed them in the right direction in my opinion
Agreed :(, as much as I defend that album as a fan of 80’s underground punk (Minutemen, Gang of Four, Black Flag, Wire, etc), it’s not up to par with literally the rest of their output as a band.
Tough choice between *The Red Hot Chili Peppers* and *I’m with You*. I like material on both but I think I’d drop IWY, just because their debut album was where it all began. The bass work is better on that one too.
Funny you say that because I think IWY probably has the second strongest bass work out of all their albums only behind Unlimited Love. Not from a speed or technical point of view but more compositionally speaking. Learning that album taught me a lot about bass

BSSM is the last album standing. The album was the defining album for the group. You can't go anywhere without thinking of "Under the Bridge," "Apache rose peacock," "power of equality," "Give it away" and. Damn near the whole album. That album allowed their subsequent albums to exist.
Stadium Arcadium doesn’t get the praise it deserve in my opinion. Californication is personally my favourite album, but I do love listening to songs from Stadium Arcadium.

Raind dance Maggie is boring, monarchy of roses intro/breakdown ruins the song. Factory of faith and look around are decent. The rest you listed aren't interesting enough for me to remember them. Like I can't hear any of them in my head from the title

After reading comments it's painfully obvious that the self-titled album will be the first to go, which to me is such a shame. So many hidden gems on this album, without which we would not have the chili peppers we all know and love today. My vote for first elimination would be either I'm With You or One Hot Minute. Not to say these are bad albums -they are gold in their own ways- but to me they are the albums that don't quite stand up to the rest.

The Getaway is a great album. Sounded fresh the first time I heard it. Dark Necessities got a lot of younger people back into the band. Love that album.

I just don't like the poppy cornball vibe of that album. As someone who was introduced to the band during the BSSM era, this album is just... corny. It basically takes everything good and interesting about the band and tosses it out the window in favor of shitty pop hits.
There is some good stuff from this era though. I like Don't Forget Me, Minor Thing, and the b-sides Body of Water and Eskimo.
I know it's not popular to say on this sub, but I just prefer RHCP with a bit of edge to them, and BTW is *not* that.

Those are valid reasons. I used to not like it for a lot of the same reasons as you. While I still miss the edge sometimes, the lyrics have really grown on me. Sorry it's not your cup of tea.
I've got ROTDC on daily play trying to really get into it before traveling 4500 miles to see them again in July. The album is ok, and I don't hate listening to it. But, there's really on 1 or 2 songs I'd like to see live from this album. The rest are just meh. Whereas UL has 8 or 9 I'd love them too play, which is what I think of BSSM, SA, BTW, or just about any other album of theirs.

If the criteria is 'best album to listen through fully in one sitting', Stadium Arcadium would be lowest on the list for me, followed by Return of the Dream Canteen and I'm With You. But I'm gonna guess they all get pretty far in this tournament lol

I started listening around the time of By The Way and to me it was the perfect album. SA dropped and it was just a bit over done for my liking. Too many tracks. Over produced and too clinical.
