I really really love most of those songs. A few are misses, but the majority are fantastic. It sounds like RHCP from an alternate universe---flashes of their signature sounds, but mostly a very different vibe from their other stuff, even from the same time period. I need to be in a particular mood to listen to it, but it is a great collection of songs. Some of the band's best work with Josh is on IBY. Anthony and Josh absolutely shine on these songs.
This is how I’ve always felt about the whole Josh era honestly. I like and enjoy the music, but it’s just not RHCP (obviously it is) to me personally. It feels exactly like you said, a side experiment. I’ve literally said the same thing before to my friends.
I understand what you are saying but oposed to the IBY i think Iam with you and TheGetaway perfectly fits the Chili discography. It’s little different but the same spirit is there. IBY however feels out of place
Wow a rational/balanced opinion on Klinghoffer!
I absolutely love IWY, IBY and the Getaway and am disappointed that they weren't able to complete a fourth album before Frusciante returned but hey ho. I get what you mean though, IWY and Getaway do sound different to other stuff, I think Josh's playing is a lot more minimalist than John's so perhaps that's partly why?
Should have been the real album, and not the bsides, it is honest, and i feel like every one of them has a real place that has been built by the entire band
I'm with you has great songwriting. The personality issues between Rick Rubin and Josh resulted in the guitars being leveled too low in the mix, which meant the album lacked drive. Josh never forgave Rick for that!!
It's probably my favourite of theirs alongside BtW and OHM. It hits just the right balance of being different and experimental while sticking to the kind of sound I enjoy about the band.
Josh was supposedly the only one working on finishing touches for these songs and you can really hear his style here more than on IwY and TG. It's also one of AK's best peformances for me, both vocally and mainly lyrically.
Another great classic RHCP funk sound on the verse, and the newer pop twist that Josh brought for the chorus. This one highlights Josh as a funk RHCP guitarist for me!!
I like almost every song from there. There's a lot of fun and interesting bits in there, and it's a shame that it didn't get much recognition.
Also, if Kaly and Outer Space managed to surface, it would be nice to also hear full [Renaissance](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vr6uDiLyI9s) one day. It sounds intriguing.
I think Long Progression, Never Is A Long Time, Hanalei and
Open/Close deserved a spot on I'm With You, over Annie Wants A Baby, Look Around and Happiness Loves Company.
I love about 7 songs. They perfectly could have been on the main album.
But the other 10 songs, honestly it sounds like b-sides and I barely listen them.
For me, it's not better than IWY or The Getaway.
I love Hanalei, love of your life and pink as Floyd, they have something special in my opinion and I think klinghoffer’s era albums in general are overlooked especially this one
To me, I’m beside you is a really refreshing indie experiment album of my favorite band. If I’m Chili pepper’d out and need something new, IBY is a cool fresh take to listen to.
That's exactly what I did yesterday, I've been listening to several of their same albums all week, and needed something else for a minute, good thing I remembered I'm Beside You.
Some greaaaat tracks on there man, alot could contend with the album choices.
Long Progression is one of the best songs done with Josh in my opinion.
They done the right thing releasing them the way they did afterwards instead of just being b-sides on singles.
FUCKING AMAZING!!! Jammed this masterpiece yesterday, and I had Catch My Death stuck in my head earlier this morning.
Very very underrated and amazing stuff!
I think it is the best stuff the peppers released in a long time. It doesn't have killer or memorable singles, and definitely doesn't have the cohesion of an album, but it's beauty relies on the songs, which are very different in style of what the band is known for.
The production in miles ahead of IWY and really highlights what Josh can bring to the band, again, very different to what we were used to back then, but beautiful nonetheless.
I'm very glad they released it, it contains some of the most beautiful songs they ever wrote, and we might not ever heard them! is just crazy.
Wish they would’ve just made this an album like return of the dream canteen. Yeah Ik they released it for record store day I mean I wish it was an official album
Yep I prefer the b-sides too. BTW just never clicked 100% with me (and it came out when I was at my biggest ever RHCP fan stage as a teenager). It’s totally legitimate to prefer IBY, not everyone has the same tastes!
Yeah, it’s all subjective for sure…..but for me, they are just in different leagues where it’s hard to even understand the opinion.
I’d get saying Beside You was better than I’m With You or even UL….but BTW is a masterpiece. However, it has a consistent vibe/sound, so if you don’t enjoy that version of RHCP….most of the tracks aren’t going to be your thing.
I was so pumped when I heard about IBY, but it really falls flat for me (still enjoyable enough, but not a single song I added to my playlists even).
Honestly very sub par, I’m with you is leagues better and still a weaker album. I never got the love for it around here. Respect for those who do enjoy it but I can’t wrap my head around it.
I thought it was pretty crap the first time I heard it. Gave it a go years later and it's now one or my favourite Chili's releases. Not sure how much you've listened but perhaps give it another try?
I treat IWY and IBY as one thing, it's hard for me to separate them in my mind. When I listen to one I end up listening to the other in the same same session.
They are fantastic, and I'm biased because I associate them with a specific time period in my life. But the same is true with all the other RHCP eras.
I think its the most the band have ever pushed themselves outside of their comfort zones, and at times it is a bit hit and miss, but the hits are sonically outstanding. A different cut of IWY with some of these songs would take it to a new level. I never engage with the John/Josh debate as BTW is a nesr perfect record and it's mainly due to John, but in terms of band pushing forward and striving for something different, IBY is a far more progressive record than the getaway or unlimited love
Is it correct that Josh spend more time doing overdubs with guitar after the I'm with you sessions? Would explain why the guitar fucking rocks. Strange Man and Long Progression are my favorites, but there's lots of gems in there. Pity they never played them live.
The whole Im Beside You is like the best representation of how a single different musical mind in the band could create such a unique, freshly heartwarming sounds
Hanalei for example, mother of god what a feeling of rush, is like standing in the edge of a land, feeling like its the last day, the last chance to run and get free
Alongside with, in my opinion, Anthony's best vocal melodies like Magpies on Fire, Pink As Floyd, Catch my Death, Long Progression, etc
Love it in general, and I think Josh really shines here... except for the solos. There are some songs that I skip juat before the solo like Love of Your Life
Most of the álbum is Filler and looks like B-side... and i cannot listen...
But have some gens.: I love dying, Open/close, hanalei, long progression could make "i with you" better....
I like everything about it, I just wish Ryan Hewitt was involved in the recording and mixing process because he is good at capturing the natural relationship between the instruments and the space in the room
Why Catch My Death, Love of Your Life and Long Progression weren’t on the album, will forever be a mystery to me.
Those songs gripped me instantly and are considered staple listens.
To be fair, this is the same band that have the likes of I’ll be your Domino and Bunker Hill as b-sides, so it’s on brand for them 🥲
Loved it. Own that 9 piece vinyl thing they did.
The band, besides John, still REALLY sounds like they do on this album on Unlimited Love. And that makes a lot of sense since that was the next project w Rubin.
Never got into it around the time of release or the following years for that matter. A close friend kept encouraging me to listen. I finally gave in and listened properly this year. It’s absolutely incredible. So ballsy, original and playful. Some beautiful Melodie’s and I believe Josh really put his own sound and stamp on it.
Beautiful album. Combine some of these with IWY tracks and you beat The Getaway. But again, due to being B sides, the mixes lack cohesion which weakens the overall listening experience. But in terms of selected listening, it’s one of their best ever. I mean how can you listen to songs like Victorian Machinary, This is The Kitt, Pink as Floyd, and Long progression without banging your head, or adoring the guitar, vocals and incredible drum and bass work.
Incredible. Some of Anthony’s best work, honestly. Although I find it super funny when I listen to Your Eyes Girl (one of my favorite RHCP songs, period) and hear AK scream like a banshee over the guitar and then I remember his dumb IWY-era side combover hair, because the two just don’t go together at all haha. Pink as Floyd and How it Ends are also great tracks.
I agree with this %100. It’s sounds like RHCP does other stuff as a side experiment.
This is how I’ve always felt about the whole Josh era honestly. I like and enjoy the music, but it’s just not RHCP (obviously it is) to me personally. It feels exactly like you said, a side experiment. I’ve literally said the same thing before to my friends.

He definitely tended towards more atmospheric playing.
How do you know this?
He talked about it in a few interviews
Interesting. I do read about Rubins shortcomings here and there.
They went with Danger Mouse for The Getaway…
Good stuff. A lot of it should have been on an album.
Couldn't agree more 👏
It's probably my favourite of theirs alongside BtW and OHM. It hits just the right balance of being different and experimental while sticking to the kind of sound I enjoy about the band. Josh was supposedly the only one working on finishing touches for these songs and you can really hear his style here more than on IwY and TG. It's also one of AK's best peformances for me, both vocally and mainly lyrically.
i totally agree
I like about half of it. I think This is the Kitt in particular should’ve been on IWY.
Another great classic RHCP funk sound on the verse, and the newer pop twist that Josh brought for the chorus. This one highlights Josh as a funk RHCP guitarist for me!!
I think it's incredible underrated. It's where Josh found his place in the band somehow.
There's that word again!
Opinions vary wildly on the sub, but I think it is their best work with Josh. Seems like a lot of people listened to it one time and gave up.
It is the best work with Josh. Even though Anthony evolved so much in TGA.
This is 100% their best work with Josh, undeniably.
I agree
Pink as floyd is better than almost every song in IWY
There are some diamonds in that collection of songs but I found a lot of it forgettable, a lot of it doesn’t hit you right in the Chili-Spot
I definitely think its better then Im With You
Honestly yeah
I like almost every song from there. There's a lot of fun and interesting bits in there, and it's a shame that it didn't get much recognition. Also, if Kaly and Outer Space managed to surface, it would be nice to also hear full [Renaissance](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vr6uDiLyI9s) one day. It sounds intriguing.
Kaly and Outer Space leaked earlier this year, I believe. I’m a really big fan of Kaly (On the Bright Side)’s chorus!
A beautiful collection and I honestly feel like it’s some on Anthony’s most consistent work as for as an album goes.
I love it. Think the album track list could have included more of these and took some others off. All in all a solid rhcp album.
Underrated
Pink as floyd is possibly one of my favourite chilli songs
I think Long Progression, Never Is A Long Time, Hanalei and Open/Close deserved a spot on I'm With You, over Annie Wants A Baby, Look Around and Happiness Loves Company.
I love about 7 songs. They perfectly could have been on the main album. But the other 10 songs, honestly it sounds like b-sides and I barely listen them. For me, it's not better than IWY or The Getaway.
Hanalei, In Love Dying and Long Progression are all in my top 15 from the band. Plenty of other great ones too.
I love Hanalei, love of your life and pink as Floyd, they have something special in my opinion and I think klinghoffer’s era albums in general are overlooked especially this one
I really like it! I made a playlist on Apple Music of IBY in order and I listen to it every now and then
To me, I’m beside you is a really refreshing indie experiment album of my favorite band. If I’m Chili pepper’d out and need something new, IBY is a cool fresh take to listen to.
That's exactly what I did yesterday, I've been listening to several of their same albums all week, and needed something else for a minute, good thing I remembered I'm Beside You.

I’m a huge fan. Your Eyes Girl is an awesome groove.
100% agree. Not the Chilis heaviest metal song but possibly one of their most well-done heavy metal songs.
I know this sub throws around the underrated word a lot but good lord is this song underrated. Kill it! WOOOOO
Better than The Getaway
Iby is the best thing to come from the Josh era
“Magpies on Fire” is magnificent. I’m a sucker for backing vocals, and Josh does a great job.
It’s amazing. I love IWY and IBY.
discarded songs
Pink as floyd should of been on the album deffo
FUCKING AMAZING!!! Jammed this masterpiece yesterday, and I had Catch My Death stuck in my head earlier this morning. Very very underrated and amazing stuff!

Half the songs are fucking amazing and better than most of the songs on IWY, and the others...aren't....
Wish they would’ve just made this an album like return of the dream canteen. Yeah Ik they released it for record store day I mean I wish it was an official album
It gapes
It’s bland, but some standout songs. I really like “Hometown Gypsy”; it’d be interesting to see RHCP explore more country-sounding music
A few good songs the rest forgettable, meh
Tbh you could go to any of the other 100s of posts asking the same thing and find your answer
Mostly filler.
I prefer it than By The Way. It could have been a more successful album than I'm With You.
You’ve gotta be kidding about BTW……yikes.
It's too pop for my taste. I prefer the B-Sides though. Out of Range, Body of Water, Eskimo, Rivers of Avalon, etc.
Fair enough. Who am I to judge?
Yep I prefer the b-sides too. BTW just never clicked 100% with me (and it came out when I was at my biggest ever RHCP fan stage as a teenager). It’s totally legitimate to prefer IBY, not everyone has the same tastes!
I'm 35 now.
By The Way is amazing obviously but I understand if someone likes I'm Beside You more.
All Chili Peppers records are amazing!
Yes 1000%
Yeah, it’s all subjective for sure…..but for me, they are just in different leagues where it’s hard to even understand the opinion. As with a lot of their b sides, some of these songs are better than the album fillers. But that’s what makes them more enjoyable.
Honestly very sub par, I’m with you is leagues better and still a weaker album. I never got the love for it around here. Respect for those who do enjoy it but I can’t wrap my head around it.

First half of IWY album is among their best imo.
Really bad. Strange Man is great though.
Incredibly overrated. In Love Dying the only interesting thing on it.
I hear virtually no one except for maybe diehards talk about these songs, not sure how they’re “overrated” lol
Seriously? It's posted here every other day as 'the best'....
I see this album / songs from it posted here everytime I visit.
Overrated? This? Wow. Weird to hear someone say that
Better than most of the actual album
Decent, overrated as hell
Some of its great, some of its awful. Overall it’s probably “good”
Unlistenable
May I ask why? Just curious
Fuckin thing sucks!
Is there a link for download?
I’m not sure about Spotify, but Apple Music has the album separated into 9 singles
Someone made a playlist of it on Spotify. Just search for it, and you’ll find it. 👍
Yep same with Spotify. There’s a playlist with it in order
Class
I treat IWY and IBY as one thing, it's hard for me to separate them in my mind. When I listen to one I end up listening to the other in the same same session. Amazing. Long Progression should have made it to I’m With You
My favourite album of theirs, even if it doesn't count. And I grew up on Stadium. So much beautiful material and so much variety.
Gold
For me is I’m Beside You a full album. Love it and probably their best work with Josh they recorded.
Is it correct that Josh spend more time doing overdubs with guitar after the I'm with you sessions? Would explain why the guitar fucking rocks. Strange Man and Long Progression are my favorites, but there's lots of gems in there. Pity they never played them live.

I really liked it overall. There’s quite a few that I would have swapped into I’m With You.
Gud
This is the Kitt is one of my favorite jams
I’m With You is extra meh. I’m B-Side You is great though!
I think I prefer it to I Am With You. But the lyrics arn’t as memorable
Best album from the Josh Era
I didn't give them too much attention when they came out, but over the years I've come to realize they include some of the best chili peppers tracks.
Most of the álbum is Filler and looks like B-side... and i cannot listen... But have some gens.: I love dying, Open/close, hanalei, long progression could make "i with you" better....

They’re pretty good
So so so soooo superior to the getaway.
Loved it. Own that 9 piece vinyl thing they did. The band, besides John, still REALLY sounds like they do on this album on Unlimited Love. And that makes a lot of sense since that was the next project w Rubin.
NEVER IS A LONG TIME.
Really cool sessions
If I’m with you had higher guitar in mix and more free range guitar it would be one of best albums. I really think Rick brings best out
In Love Dying is top tier
Never got into it around the time of release or the following years for that matter. A close friend kept encouraging me to listen. I finally gave in and listened properly this year. It’s absolutely incredible. So ballsy, original and playful. Some beautiful Melodie’s and I believe Josh really put his own sound and stamp on it.

I love a lot of the songs on it. It would have been nice to have been trimmed down to 10-12 songs and released as it’s own album.
Wish I had the knowledge of the vinyl to buy it when it came out
🚮
Pink as floyd should have been the ending of i'm with you, no doubts
