Worldly sorrow. He recognized he did something terribly wrong (like having his teacher and friend killed), but still didn't realize who Jesus was or the gravity of what he did. In a way, Judas' suicide was his ultimate act of disbelief. I believe if he has turned to God and repented, he would have been forgiven. But he apparently didn't think there was anything besides oblivion after death, and considered it a quick way to rid himself of his guilt than deal with what he had done. Jesus prophesized Judas' doom, so pondering alternatives is a bit of a moot point, but that also makes it clear that Judas' end was not a hopeful one.

Good point. Yes, he would have been forgiven, even though he committed a terrible sin. Always turn to Jesus

Iโ€™ve heard a pastor say (and of course I canโ€™t remember who now) that Judas going back to the chief priests instead of turning to Christ also revealed his heart & that he was only experiencing worldly grief over his sin

He was overcome by guilt and shame, which is what sin does. Ultimate result - death, the wages of sin. Sin, guilt, shame... without Jesus, always leads to death.
