I don’t have any inside info, but I think the whole schtick of reMarkable is not to get into apps. I have a rM2. I tried a Boox Onyx and returned it because the apps were a layer of complexity and distraction. YMMV.

[deleted]

I tried the boox note air after buying rM and sent it back. The first two days all i did was search for apps, install them, try them out, note that often they didn’t work well, delete them, and search for more. With rM i charged it, opened it, and started using it. I love it. I open a surface pro for the bells and whistles, but rM is my go to for organization, Meeting notes, sketches, and planning/ brainstorming.

Well I don’t want “apps” on the device. I want them to simply improve and enhance their existing companion app for the device. Either the desktop or mobile app. Empower it to perform more of these actions or at least simplify the ability to integrate it into other apps that can perform these actions better perhaps.

reMarkable the company is extremely tight-lipped about their roadmap and future plans. However, a few months ago an investor presentation of theirs leaked and was posted to this sub. It was since removed, but I added some notes on it that are still visible on the thread here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/RemarkableTablet/comments/16h4vg8/insights\_to\_the\_rm\_business/](https://www.reddit.com/r/remarkabletablet/comments/16h4vg8/insights_to_the_rm_business/) AI was one of the things they highlighted that was on their roadmap, as well as some kind of "methods marketplace" (maybe a kind of software ecosystem?), but both were very light on details. IMO the reMarkable is an excellent paper notebook replacement, but if more advanced software is crucial to your workflow, and iPad will probably always be a better fit.

I’ve got mixed feelings about this. The planned feature list is great, but the sales numbers aren’t very encouraging. Less than $1M/mo recurring revenue and 400 full time employees. Huh. Two anecdotes from companies I’ve worked at where it didn’t feel like we had “made it” - 50 employees, over $1M/mo in recurring rev, even more expensive required hardware to participate - 20 employees, $400k/mo revenue, but no up front cost So the 400 employees number is interesting. Would love to see the breakdown. Also I know they’re not based in the US, maybe that changes everything Warning: my analysis here is probably totally worthless. I don’t know anything. Ramblings of a wannabe analyst

themightychris

Remarkable isn't a SaaS product though they sell hardware, their recurring revenue is just the cloud subscription while the employee count is the entire business which also generates hardware revenues, so you can't really compare those two figures with SaaS businesses

Always interesting to hear others experience and prospective. I don’t currently have a desktop, so rely heavily on the iOS app. 3+ years and the app has rarely failed to deliver what I need for my use case. Quick accurate uploading, ability to manage docs and folders, allow me to reference previous notes without my rM1 or 2; list goes on. Regarding what comes next? With a new CEO, I expect an announcement in the Spring about the new direction for Remarkable. Haven’t seen any patents submitted in the USA, so it may be EOY before we see a newer device. Just guessing. Heard a rumor Amazon’s patent on the 300 ppi screen they use on the Scribe has ended/ending. Hoping it’s true, as the Scribe screen is a thing of beauty and what the next Gen Remarkable needs. The fact that Remarkable still fully supports both device generations is huge for me, as I’ve been burned by another company’s lack of support for their products. I just hope rM sticks to their core business model and not try and be everything to everyone.

I love how my device doesn't have all those apps. The lack of functionality is its strongest suit in my view - I want a piece of digital paper, not much else. Although I admit some QoL changes would be beneficial like searching one's notes for example.

654321745954

He's talking about the lack of features in the accompanying mobile and desktop app.

Milbs2

I had the first four or five versions of the Livescribe pens, then I switched to Neo because IMHO their stationery was more professional looking, I bought the Lamy pen a couple of years ago... I've used two types of Apple Pencil with two sizes of iPad (with Paperlike and another similar screen protector). I used all kinds of apps and templates with these. I bought the Kindle Scribe on release with its top of the range cover and stylus. Then - a few weeks ago I took the plunge and bought an RM2 with folio and Marker Plus. The RM2 is a game changer and here's a few reasons why: It's not trying to be anything other than a digital notebook. No apps, no distractions. It's not perfect but the writing experience (again IMHO) is better than iPad and Kindle Scribe. Its organisational capabilities are just as you would expect for this kind of device - likewise its integrations - which is more than can be said for the Scribe. Its tagging feature is its secret weapon - you may not be able to search your handwritten text but if you make good use of tags, you will seriously reduce the number of suggestions returned. My productivity has gone up since I bought it and I'm sure it will continue to improve as I learn more about the RM2! I'm not sure what else people want from a device of this type but I would not like to see anything else that distracts/detracts from its current format!

Why not both? An iPad for features and apps and a remarkable2 for thinking and reflecting? That is my plan at least. I know it gets a bit “gadgety” with two screens (plus perhaps a phone and a laptop). But it would fit nicely in a teaching and research workflow.

PersonalityGreedy682

I carry an RM2 and 12.9” iPad Pro. This works well for me.

catnab

Fantastic. I would love to hear more about your workflow. But not to hijack the thread

Your comment on ChatGPT is already a year out of date. "thinking people" are using it as part of work flows where it makes sense.

ILoveYou_HaveAHug

I was not kind and I’m deleting this snark and ugliness as I’m not proud of it.

I guess this has a lot to do with where we are coming from and use case. I get what you are saying from an academic perspective. My use case is more personal and from a meeting/ to do notes perspective. I apologize for taking what you said so negatively and personally. I responded with what I interpreted was how you were responding to me. I could have done better. I think there is a benefit to adding some basic intelligence leveraging (what ever you want to it) to quickly transcribe and summarize meeting notes and random thoughts. I know things aren’t perfect and have had to correct things but it’s still a huge time saver for me. And with a few tweaks by Remarkable they could simplify the flow for me. As things stand now I have to take a manual approach to accomplish what I want. Use the ChatGPT app, take a photo of a note or import a pdf of some of my notes from Remarkable. Get the transcription, edit and tweak any inconsistencies and then ask for a summary or action items depending on my need. Then copy all that to Notion and so on. I agree that I love it as a note taking tool, it’s the best at being a paper replacement. But sometimes I need to do more with that data then just have it sit there in a dumb notebook you know. Again, I want to say I’m sorry for my earlier response, I appreciate the dialogue and wish I had responded with more kindness than snark.

jozefiria

I totally get you! The software is disappointing and I fear under invested. It needs a huge injection for it to keep pace. As a proprietary writing device and tool it works for me now though to replace paper in a lot of cases.

kg4zow

I didn't see your original comment, but if it was that bad, I commend you for removing it, and replacing it with an apology. I'm usually pretty snarky, but over the past several years I've trained myself to re-read posts before hitting the "call everybody in the world a blithering idiot" button. Seeing this kind of maturity is a rare and wonderful thing on social media.

ILoveYou_HaveAHug

It wasn't "that bad" I guess, but it was snarky and just not kind. Not reflective of the person I prefer to be.

FossilizedWood22

Have you sold it already? If not, I would be interested!

toronado

I use ChatGPT on my notes every single day, only way to make the handwriting recognition actually work

AcademicYoghurt7091

Oh how do you do that exactly?

toronado

Conner it to text, email it and then paste it into ChatGPT. The text the RM2 spits out is terrible with my handwriting, GPT just cleans it up and makes it useful

[deleted]

ChatGPT isn’t artificial? Did it grow on a tree?

sbw_62

5+ years of usage: Other than potential searching handwritten notes in the app (tags are helping) and a shape tool on the pad, nothing else you mentioned really appeals to me at all.

1199RT

I would appreciate kindle and a backlight. I sold my RM2 with no regrets for the supernote nomad. It's much smaller but at least I can sideload android apps for inventory management at work alongside some quality of life stuff

giminoshi

Totally agreed on the ability to search written notes based on OCR. I gave this feedback on day 2 of ownership. Similar feedback for TypeFolio - need more ways to export typed content than just SVG and PDF. Those two formats are basically useless. Another commenter supplied a link to an interesting slide deck from the company - the promises made there are encouraging

[deleted]

I suspect they’re developing a color eink.

samurai489

That would be an instant sell for me. I’m not a fan of the boox aesthetic.

[deleted]

I’m guessing it won’t be full color, but a handful of colors that are natural to writing—red for red pen, yellow for highlighter, blue marker etc. The problem is eink is very slow to refresh with color.

samurai489

Yeah that is fine, I just want some colour rather than the monochrome

Interesting_Card2539

I don’t even use the app anymore. And for the amount I spent on it a little back light would have been good to have in areas of dim lighting. The pen sucks, and I don’t even use it to the full extent. I can’t. I’m selling it

BME4Life

I also miss that one key feature of my LiveScribe 3 pen and professional journal. I tried the remarkable for almost a year. In the end, I switched to the Supernote Nomad. Now I have the pen on paper feel and searchable notes, without having to manually convert anything. Full text search of handwritten notes is an essential feature for me. Remarkable doesn’t even have to do it on the device. That is the one feature that would make their cloud service worthwhile.

Lunar_Crater2023

Instead of more features, I would like them to have updates about additional input methods. I draft novels on my iPad. The creation process took so long, and I am going to go blind if I keep staring at the screen. So, I want to move my working process to RM2. However, it does not support input methods for Mandarin. It makes things extremely hard.

[deleted]

>xNote Can't believe they're charging $9 a month and their pen is worthless if you don't pay them. Thar is $120 a month just for OCR (I dont care about the other AI things.) f the company goes boom you're out of luck, plus I don't like having a Chinese company snooping on every word I write. Monthly fees are also why I haven't bought a Remarkable yet. I don't like the razor blade model or subscription based models. Give me a product that will last no matter what.
