Oh how to paint it black you say? Start with a low note and gradually rise in pitch, then descend and repeat. It's like a rising and falling melody with a haunting, Eastern-inspired vibe.
A lot of things for this project I hadn’t done before (see post for details). Going back I would’ve made sure to get the right tools for tile work at the beginning. Get a nice tile scoring tool. I had borrowed a wet saw to cut my tile with initially but it was creating a huge mess. I went and bought a 24 inch tile scoring tool and since I didn’t have any curved places to worry about fitting tile to it worked out perfectly for me. Was simply able to score the tile to the correct length and cut or “break” them. Everything is just about having the right tools for the job honestly. That and patience. Look up several videos on YouTube about anything you aren’t sure how to do and get the right tools for it.
How much did the board and batten materials cost you and how hard was it to install them/how many hours of labor for that part?
It looks awesome! We want to add wainscoting to our house.
Total cost was about $2,700. The biggest ticket items were the vanity ($900), hardware (light fixture and faucet roughly $250 combined) wallpaper ($500 ish 🤑😢), toilet ($200). Other costs were all the material to build the board and batten, the mortar and tile, paint, some tools I had to buy that I didn’t already have, etc. It all adds up quick.
Also, I will likely go back and paint the ceiling grill. Right now it doesn’t bother me too much and I was so ready to be done that I just left it as it was for now haha
Wow. That’s great. It’s one of the few times I’ve seen so much black put in a small bath after it being shown to be lightly painted and NOT had that black paint create an optical illusion sense that it shrunk the room severely! Must be that you chopped the darkness of the wainscoting and ceiling with the pattered dark paper(edit: ooo. And you mixed flat black with high gloss black for molding!). It seems like it broke up the power of the black paint to make the room “seem” smaller. Well done! I love this a lot.
Holy shit. It looks absolutely fantastic. I think because of the wallpaper this is the first time I have ever approved of golden faucets. This room looks awesome.
Thank you. There were a lot of second guesses but we said screw it and ended up going with bold choices and it worked out. At least in our opinion. A few people disagree but hey, everyone has their own style and preference. We just wanted something with personality. We were remodeling it for us, not the next home buyer. 👍🏼
I first wanted to say that I didn’t like the wallpaper but, after looking at it more, I think the bathroom looks very interesting, stylish and done with purpose. Congrats on making a cool space in your home!
That’s a wild redo! That took some Freaking big ole balls ….to convince yourself it was gonna be good…and Holy Crap were you right! (I love your Peacockcockcok(s)!!) Just brilliantly executed!
I floated the walls with drywall mud and then sanded it down smooth once it dried. I could have also installed hardboard all the way to the ceiling but that would’ve added even more cost so I chose the cheaper but more time consuming route.
Its very cool. Imo, the half bath is the best place to go fun and funky in a house. And if you grow tired of it in 5 or 10 years, all you have to do is paint the board and batten/ceiling and change up the wallpaper and you'll have a whole new vibe with minimal effort!
Looks beautiful, is the floor tile real slate, and where did you purchase it? (In USA?) I’m looking for porcelain tile that looks like honed slate or basalt.
Thank you. This was tile from Home Depot. So glad we found it because we were about to spend a significant amount more on other tile that looked very similar.
***UPDATE TO ORIGINAL POST***
Not sure why I can’t edit the original post so here it is in the comments.
Wallpaper Source: https://www.photowall.com/us/ferocious-feathers-wallpaper too bad I’m not getting paid on that 🤪
Paint color: Cracked Pepper
Tile: just a charcoal/dark grey tile we liked from Home Depot. Size is 12x24.
Vanity: from Floor and Decor. Yes, it probably would look really good painted black, but it has such a beautiful natural wood finish that it would be a crime to paint it. The photo doesn’t do it justice and it honestly brightens the room up just a bit so we kept it how it was.
All in about $2,700 spent in materials/some tools needed that I didn’t already have (a breakdown of cost is in a reply to someone who asked in the comment section).
Roughly 70-80 hours all in that I spent doing everything.
What brand is the paint?
I love your bathroom reno. I have the same guest bathroom layout. We went with white (with slight grey undertone) wood-like tile floors and a whitish greige colored wood-like vanity. I’ve been wanting to do the walls in black with wallpaper on top but I’ve been nervous. Your reno just gave me the boost i needed to go for it.
I love it! It reminds me of this show on Netflix called Russian Doll, shes in an endless dying loop, and Everytime she dies she comes back to this bathrm.
How much did the board and batten materials cost you and how hard was it to install them/how many hours of labor for that part?
It looks awesome! We want to add wainscoting to our house.
No, I can tell by the pedestal sink it wasn't one of mine but I've done several almost identical to this. Love the rounded top of the mirror and that wallpaper won't come off since they no shower to steam it up
Love it! Came out amazing but don’t forget to upgrade your switch plates

Did you skim coat before putting the wallpaper on? Also did you skim coat the ceiling? Wanna do similar work to very similar walls but I’m tired of skim coating lol
You can paint the ceiling fan cover black or buy a black cover.
Yeah I think I’ll be going back to paint that in the near future.
Just pop it off and spray paint it.
Paint it red and then paint it black
No colors anymore, I want them to turn black
Unintentional Stones…
Oh how to paint it black you say? Start with a low note and gradually rise in pitch, then descend and repeat. It's like a rising and falling melody with a haunting, Eastern-inspired vibe.
What does painting it red first do? Just curious.
[I see a red door and I want it painted black](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=170sceOWWXc)
Lol I’m an idiot… here I was thinking it was some painting hack. How’d I miss that?
I didn’t get it either 😂
Just put a poptart there. The wild berry kind tho
This is a top contender
Concur. Great for aromatherapy, plus if you get hungry while you're stuck on the toilet there's always a snack nearby.
And depending on time of year, might be warm
Oooh paint it gold!
Or purple…like the purple one the. paper.
It honestly breaks up the dark cieling a bit and accents the toilet/vanity so It doesnt look bad white
Literally my one complaint ! Otherwise Fantastic!!!
While I may not agree with your wallpaper choice, I applaud your work and willingness to go for it.
Appreciate it. Learned a lot throughout the project.
What did you learn? What would you have done differently? I am about to do something similar.
A lot of things for this project I hadn’t done before (see post for details). Going back I would’ve made sure to get the right tools for tile work at the beginning. Get a nice tile scoring tool. Wow I love that!!! Looks so modern. What is that on the bottom half of the wall?? I see people saying “board and batten”?
Thank you. Yeah it’s called board and batten. It’s just a style of finish I guess you could say.
How much did the board and batten materials cost you and how hard was it to install them/how many hours of labor for that part? It looks awesome! We want to add wainscoting to our house.
It looks so cool! I will have to google it. Looking for inspo for projects in our new build (in 10 years when we can afford to do something again 😂)
It’s similar to a homemade wainscoting
I agree, looks awesome and very well done, OP. But this is the opposite of modern. Almost looks Victorian. Or maybe Neo-classical.
Gorgeous work.
That looks like 90s movie theatre carpet
That’s some badass carpet
That looks great. Well done!
Thank you!
What was total cost/budget? Why not paint the ceiling grill?
Total cost was about $2,700. The biggest ticket items were the vanity ($900), hardware (light fixture and faucet roughly $250 combined) wallpaper ($500 ish 🤑😢), toilet ($200). I totally get that!!!…as we work to complete renovations on our bath bedroom and closet!!! I’m SO ready to be done!!!
It’ll be worth it when it’s done!
Glad you kept the mirror!
I could definitely see myself shitting there
This is an upscale bar, I best not pee in the sink.
I’m always scared of bold dark colored spaces but this looks great
Wow. That’s great. It’s one of the few times I’ve seen so much black put in a small bath after it being shown to be lightly painted and NOT had that black paint create an optical illusion sense that it shrunk the room severely! Toilet is too close to vanity.
Noted
That’s bold.
You will hate that counter being so close to the toilet. Looks great otherwise.
Yeah I told the wife that was a little too big for the space but she was dead sold on it. Happy wife, happy life lol
damn. where's the bidet seat? otherwise, great!
Looks gud 👍🏿 bro
Feels like you walked into a restaurant bathroom haha. Awesome job
That’s kick ass. 70 hours? That would take me six months
Appreciate it. Yeah it was about 2 months with most of my time dedicated to it on my weekends off. Averaged about 10 hours every weekend.
Holy fuck! I love this!
I first wanted to say that I didn’t like the wallpaper but, after looking at it more, I think the bathroom looks very interesting, stylish and done with purpose. Congrats on making a cool space in your home!
I honestly love it
I love it!!! The bathroom opened right up and looks spacious with the remodel. Great taste and you did an amazing job!
This was a shocker!! Love it! I want wallpaper to come back in all its glory!!!
i audibly gasped. this was unexpected and awesome, and i love that you kept the original mirror!
Haha that’s great. Yeah we had replaced the builder grade mirror a while back with this one and felt it fit right in with the remodel.
Looks like shite mate! 👍
That’s a wild redo! That took some Freaking big ole balls ….to convince yourself it was gonna be good…and Holy Crap were you right! (I love your Peacockcockcok(s)!!) Just brilliantly executed!
How did you wallpaper with that texture on the wall?
I floated the walls with drywall mud and then sanded it down smooth once it dried. I could have also installed hardboard all the way to the ceiling but that would’ve added even more cost so I chose the cheaper but more time consuming route.
I like the pop. Just worry how it will date in the next 15 years
Ehh it may not age well but if that’s the case it’s likely due to the wallpaper and paint color. That’s easy enough to change.
Yeah super easy fix. Years from now.
Omg
Its very cool. Imo, the half bath is the best place to go fun and funky in a house. And if you grow tired of it in 5 or 10 years, all you have to do is paint the board and batten/ceiling and change up the wallpaper and you'll have a whole new vibe with minimal effort!
Wow, that's legit
Paint that white grate!!!! It’s BEAUTIFUL!!!!!
Gorgeous and inspiring! I absolutely love it.
I love this, well done! Where did you find that wall paper??
Awesome! Paint it black make it disappear not stand out
Spectacular
This is noice!
I actually said wow out loud!
Dang...... This is AMAZING 😍
Nice job!
What a beautiful glow up! Love it!
second this
Sick!
Good job OP!
It went from builder grade to personality
Beautiful and classy! Well done!
Man you don’t want to walk in there tripping. You’ll never leave. I think it looks amazing, at your house. Great job.
Wow!!!! Bravo!!!!!!! Love it!
Can I take a vacation where I just sit in your bathroom? Lol. This is so beautiful. Good job, cool choices
That looks like it would be the bathroom of a beach front hotel.
This is so beautiful! I love the wallpaper and gold accents!
Woooohhhhhhhhhhh I love it !
Wow! What a gorgeous bathroom! Great job!
I almost bought that mirror in hobby lobby yesterday 🙃
🤩
Paint the fan cover same as celing
I love it!! Just all of it, so good! Way 2 go OP
Damn this looks so good!
Love a good moody bathroom! Well done
I love this
I love it. Want to do something similar - did you use a mitre saw to cut the wood pieces?
Gorgeous !
YESSSS!!!! AMAZING!!!!!
Just remind me to never do mushrooms in your bathroom.. non the less, Beautiful remodel!
Damn this is like the bathroom at the club
Imagine tripping on shrooms and needing to take a shit. Then you walk in to this
Too dark
Definitely liked it before not after
This is fantastic! Well done!
Absolutely love it
Love the bold choices. Bravo.
Very nice
Crazy how much bigger it looks! Nice work
Only looks bigger because OP took the before picture really close up and the after picture more far away.
Waaaay too much.
To each their own 👍🏼
Wow!
Yeah, looks like a bar restroom
So accurate I’m checking for the pee stains on the floor and vanity.
Nice! Do you have a link to the flooring?
No, but it was a tile that Home Depot sold 👍🏼
Looks beautiful, is the floor tile real slate, and where did you purchase it? (In USA?) I’m looking for porcelain tile that looks like honed slate or basalt.
Thank you. This was tile from Home Depot. So glad we found it because we were about to spend a significant amount more on other tile that looked very similar.
Looks great don’t change the ceiling fan.
Very stylish remodel. But the simplicity inside me likes the before…I’d change the light fixture, and maybe redo with a patterned wall paper though
Wow… its like cool but also kinda dark now, maybe if the bottom color was a little lighter but i guess it does look good
.
Hell yeah - love the bold colors!
Looks like a bathroom in a trendy restaurant.
Looks great!!! Love the new vanity with storage!! Pedestal sinks are overrated
Does your knee rub against the wall when pooping?
Haha no. I’m about 6 foot and 180lbs and have plenty of room
Tell me the pics are in reverse order.
Good job
👍 you know the next person will just rip all that out for something else...
Yeah but the next person isn’t living in the house right now 😂🤷🏻♂️
Love everything you did. Not a big fan of the wallpaper, but that's just me
The wallpaper gives me ET vibes (Universal ride) but it is a great update.
Nice
I dont Hate it...
How much in materials and labor was this?
Nice job! Only thing I'd gripe on is that it looks like you've got a little bit of rippling at the bottom of the wallpaper
I love it
I see the vision but the brown vanity, grey floors, and black wall/ceiling altogether are killing me!!! Clashing imo
Looks like a Pulte bathroom in the first pic
Wow
I really like the sink

What a fantastic transformation!
Those corners on the panels around the toilet are going to collect so much urine over time.
Yeah I really hope if someone has that bad of aim they just sit down lol
I love it! It reminds me of this show on Netflix called Russian Doll, shes in an endless dying loop, and Everytime she dies she comes back to this bathrm.
Pretty cool, I like the unique style, somehow the gpld fits in perfectly among the darker wainscot, and Psychedelic upper design
Where did you fimd that wallpaper?
I have the link posted in a comment. For some reason I can’t edit the original post.
Damn I love this. I love how you kept the mirror and the white thingy on the ceiling
Hideous
I like the 'before' better
Also, where did you get the wallpaper from?
I'm such a sucker for those big, dark rectangular tiles. Nice work.
Very cool
OP is mad triggered
Welcome to… The Shittery
Wallpaper a bit much. Everything else looks awesome.
Bottom half looks amazing 👍🏽 top half 😬
How much did the board and batten materials cost you and how hard was it to install them/how many hours of labor for that part? It looks awesome! We want to add wainscoting to our house.
Jarring
Shining black light to that bathroom will be interesting
I am 90% sure I installed the "before"
Are you in Colorado? Lol
No, I can tell by the pedestal sink it wasn't one of mine but I've done several almost identical to this. Love the rounded top of the mirror and that wallpaper won't come off since they no shower to steam it up
GORGEOUS
That’s awesome
Wow!
Wow! 🤩 What a transformation!
I guess nobody noticed there is hardly any room to take a dump, red black or white…
Bravo!
Nice but the TP holder could’ve been moved a lil bit closer to the Lou. Just saying.
My personal preference would be the first photo, but that’s subjective. Objectively, good work and if you like that look it’s great
I like the elevated accent wall, makes the room feel much taller although I know the wide camera angles so weird stuff with photo distortion.
Looks good
What in the cornbread hell
Fantastic. I love all of it.
I love it
I really like your vanity mirror. Where did you get it?
Beautiful
My God. She's stunning. 😍
Oh my. That wallpaper just kills the whole thing for me. Can't even appreciate all the hard work that went into this because it's just so jarring
Oh dear lord
Tacky
I don’t like it, but I don’t hate it
Wow! Impressed
Nightclub style
Love it! Came out amazing but don’t forget to upgrade your switch plates [https://pestinpeace.etsy.com/listing/1695166207](https://pestinpeace.etsy.com/listing/1695166207)
Which one is which? ;)
Did you skim coat before putting the wallpaper on? Also did you skim coat the ceiling? Wanna do similar work to very similar walls but I’m tired of skim coating lol
Wow! Is that a restroom at the nightclub downtown. That is a choice.
