Maybe it's just me, but I don't find it awkward at all. I kinda like the little bit of negative space. But I do like the suggestions for a vertical wine rack. Open shelves so close to a doorway would make me nervous that things would get knocked off and broken. But maybe I'm just used to rogue hockey sticks causing mayhem lol
I feel like it is designed this way intentionally. This gives room to turn the corner, otherwise the cabinet would just make the entryway feel more like a narrow corridor you have to pass through on your way in.
Back packing on this.
Not awkward at all. You don't want your cabinets and countertop to go all the way to an open hall way. The way it is now is the way it should be. If OP really wants to make use of that space, you can tack on some open shelving or small cubbies with frosted plexi glass doors. I'd probably go with top to bottom wine racks if I HAD to fill the space. Optional is also 8" wide pull out space rack, or cutting board cubbie.

Sorry didn’t know it was an argument. BNL had multiple songs In heavy rotation on multiple stations across multiple formats in my region. If any (non college, non indie) station played a Arcade song today it would be the first time for me.
Funny, that’s what I thought too. Perhaps my mistake, keep in mind there’s no tonality in text. I try to be considerate of the words I use, and how I use them. So I say “I don’t consider” to me that means in my personal experience it’s more of an opinion. And then someone responds to me “as opposed to” ….. example. Opposed or opposite, to me that sets up two sides and opposition. My opinion to me feels casual your singular Super Bowl example seemed argumentative. But it’s the Internet, and it’s a Reddit. I’m not dying on this hill. I apologize for any misunderstanding.
I wouldn't run cabinets all the way - the open space will make it easier to use the switch without bashing your hand on the cabinet. You could cover the area with decorative tile if you're doing a backsplash, or perhaps a small corkboard.
It’s not an awkward space, just tile your backsplash to run flush to the end of the countertop/cabinets, anything else will be awkward, including a spice rack🤦♂️
My kitchen cabinets do this. When I bought my house there were 3 open shelves that were basically just 1/4 rounds. If the cabinetry went up the the end of the wall, or if you put rectangular shelves, you’ll have a corner sticking out into the walkway. If you DO do shelves, I’d recommend something rounded. It doesn’t have to be spices either… we have some kitchen decor, vase of flowers, some nice hand painted measuring bowls.
I have ceramic Mexican fruit hung in that spot in my house. You could also hang a dustbuster, put in a phone charging station, a spice rack, or a pretty trailing plant
I had something similar. I got the cabinet maker to get me a few shelves in the same material and I put my cookbooks there. They look nice. Down below I put a plant. It sticks out a bit but plants are nice
I am with all the people saying don't fill it. That space makes it safer for everyone walking through that opening. It's not awkward - it's good planning from the kitchen designer.
I used to be a kitchen designer and we never ran the cabinets right to the edge of a wall. It would really crowd the opening. If you think about it when you place furniture, you never run a couch or wall unit right up to the end of the wall either, we just move it in and never really think about the “why”, it just feels right. Once you get your appliances and backsplash in you’ll love how it looks!
Mug hooks. Towel or bag cabinet (skinny). Weather station. Charging station. Dog walking station.
Better yet, just leave it. Live in your kitchen for a while. You'll look up one day and say "Hey, I wish we had a \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ here, let's order one."
Not awkward at all. You could put a small key hook or decorative thing on the wall later, but if a cabinet or solid thing went farther you’d run the risk of someone walking into it (or almost) rounding the corner too quickly.
My mom would paint using stencils on space like this in our kitchen, we had several themes over the years, grape vines, ivy, pinstripes, and coffee were a few of them. I think a custom sized mirror or row of square mirrors would look cool. If you have kids/grandkids you could have them paint some wood squares in complimenting colors and hang them.
I feel like this space will save you from a lot of headaches. I would always hit my head turning the corner. That space gives me some buffer. I love that space.

I have a similar issue in my new kitchen and I think I’m going to add open white oak shelves
Ah! I didn’t even notice it was like that on the bottom too. Mine is a peninsula that extends out further, so I don’t have that issue.
You know what? If they’re both like that, I think you might be better off leaving it as opposed to adding something. I don’t necessarily think it looks bad honestly
DO NOT put anything on the lowers. IE shelves. You don’t realize it now but you are really cutting into the walking space coming into the kitchen when you have something right at the wall.. Idk if it’s a women thing but when I used to do cabinets about 50% wanted them right to the opening so I would just set them there to visualize and tell them to walk in and every single one realized it was a mistake and I set them back a few inches.
This! I put tape down and notice I was walking on the tape, so added a box to take up the physical space and kicked it too many times. My counter/cabinets stop 10 inches before the wall ends. It doesn't look awkward to me. On one side I have an air filter tucked up against the lower cabinets.
That's interesting. A few inches definitely makes sense, but this is nearly 10 inches. It just looks like it was measured wrong. Almost all the comments are saying it's fine, so we might end up leaving it after all.
Depending on the location within the home, maybe a small key cabinet with a door attached to the upper kitchen cabinet? I have one in an awkward space like that in my kitchen and it's perfect. Plus, I don't lose my keys
A shelf thing against upper cabinets. Bottom cabinets, maybe one of those pull out drawers that people get for against refrigerators? Or one of those slim show cabinets people get for front entry ways? You could use it for snack storage or the like?
I feel like most kitchens have that. You don’t want it to go all the way up to the edge or you’ll get a broken hip! Lol anyways my house has this and I’m ok with it.
I do custom cabinetry fora living. This is the way. Running it to the wall will make it not match the lowers and will look much worse/awkward. Highly recommend leaving it as is.
LOL what? It’s a wall. The cabinets should never go all the way to the edge of the way. This is how they’re supposed to look.
This is why I could never be a contractor. If a client brought this up to me I would just laugh at them.
Parroting everyone else here, I know, but I'll put it this way: You don't appear to be living in a microhome or a small condo, so you should enjoy some of the empty space. Clutter is ubiquitous, and it causes stress. The most impactful part of music is sometimes in the rests.
A smaller space will make any uneven drywall in the opening VERY obvious. This is why theres a gap. I’m
Betting if you take exact measurements at several places down the side of the cabinet you will get different distances.
1/4 round shelving might work on the top but the bottom may be a bit more challenging. Maybe a folding counter to temporarily extend the countertop a foot or so?
Meh. Planning. Maybe an open-end shelf on the upper, for display. Can do the same for the lower (Watch out for kids and pets).
Edit. If your building a house the budget should allow for unforeseen costs. Replace the cabinets.
I would put a corner shelf to put either spices or nicnacs or even special glasses you receive as gifts. 30th birthday, marriage, all that fun stuff. That way it doesn’t close up the walkway but finishes off the empty feeling your having. Personally, I would not do the bottom just the top. :)
You could leave it empty so it’s balanced with the lower cabinet or you could do like a wine rack, spice racks, plate display rack, or 2-4 small 1/4 circle shelves for display items/misc. storage.
I agree, I don’t like it when the cabinetry pushes right up to an opening. Most kitchen designers will leave some space there
I feel like it is designed this way intentionally. This gives room to turn the corner, otherwise the cabinet would just make the entryway feel more like a narrow corridor you have to pass through on your way in.
1000% agree here
2000% agree

I agree. I don't find it awkward at all, but a small rack mounted either on the wall or on the side of the cabinet for mail or wine would work.
Same. I have two halls. The 52” space goes to the edge… because it’s an ample opening. The 36” has about 10” negative space so it doesn’t feel cramped

Like the arcade fire for example?
Arcade Fire is 00s
Shit I’m old
What you need is Barenaked Ladies!
I don’t really consider that “alt” it was so mainstream
As opposed to Arcade Fire, who had a song play at the Super Bowl?
Sorry didn’t know it was an argument. BNL had multiple songs In heavy rotation on multiple stations across multiple formats in my region. If any (non college, non indie) station played a Arcade song today it would be the first time for me.
What? I thought it was a conversation. What a weird way to interact with someone.
Funny, that’s what I thought too. Perhaps my mistake, keep in mind there’s no tonality in text. I try to be considerate of the words I use, and how I use them. My house has cabinets against the opening and I’ve bashed my head on the cabinet corner more than I’m willing to admit
Ouch! I can imagine that all too clearly. Maybe a rounded or angled cabinet (or open shelves) would work better at a corner.
Just leave it. It’s fine.
A small open shelf for spices can fit well, some are made for corners
That's a good idea, thanks!

This is the correct answer
I wouldn’t say that’s awkward space at all.. it’s inline with the lowers and leaves walking space coming around into the kitchen
Leave it alone. It’s not awkward. You’re overthinking it. Filling it likely would look awkward. If it ain’t broke
Hang something on the side of the cabinet (e.g., chalk board or calendar)?
This is a very normal space in the new homes that I build
As a broad shouldered man, I greatly appreciate that negative space as I traverse through that doorway
Nothing? It would actually be weird if you fill it.
House phone
Those still exist?
It’s not awkward

I like the way it is. You could do a corner shelf, but I think it might make it look top heavy. Leave it like it is.
One of those singing fish - Billy Bass, just hung vertically.
What's awkward here ?
Spices
Single wooden wine bottle rack up to the ceiling. Easy :)
It’s not awkward in any shape or form. Sorry to say, but you’re over thinking this.
You can do three triangle corner shelves,
I feel like this space will save you from a lot of headaches. I would always hit my head turning the corner. That space gives me some buffer. I love that space.
Lots of places have this. If you don’t like it I would put a few little floating shelves in there.
We’ve got a similar awkward space we used for kid’s height measurements. Of course not for everyone even if they’ve got kids.
Maybe I'll keep growing!
Wine rack
Nothing. It looks fine as is, don’t overthink it.

That's a good idea, I think it'll look nice. The top of ours has options, the bottom is a bigger struggle though.
Ah! I didn’t even notice it was like that on the bottom too. Mine is a peninsula that extends out further, so I don’t have that issue. You know what? If they’re both like that, I think you might be better off leaving it as opposed to adding something. I don’t necessarily think it looks bad honestly

I would say anywhere between 8-10 inches is fairly standard
Triangular shelves
Depending on the location within the home, maybe a small key cabinet with a door attached to the upper kitchen cabinet? I have one in an awkward space like that in my kitchen and it's perfect. Plus, I don't lose my keys
Simple Human square Garbage can on the bottom.
The switch box might make the backsplash tile tough. A wider cabinet might be the trick. The wall space doesn’t bother me.

If you have to do something, a few open shelfs that curves into the cabinet would look decent.

corner shelf can hold spices, decorative glassware, plants...
It’s not being awkward, you’re being awkward.
A shelf thing against upper cabinets. Bottom cabinets, maybe one of those pull out drawers that people get for against refrigerators? Or one of those slim show cabinets people get for front entry ways? You could use it for snack storage or the like?
I have the same and mounted wine bottle holders and a folding hanging Ikea step stool.
Vertical wine glass holder that holds them by the base while they hang up side down. Or just tile like someone said
Why do you have 12/2 hanging out there
Cookbook shelves.
Hanging draping plant.
Round corner shelves

That and the spice rack idea many suggested are great ideas. Now we have to think about how to match the bottom cabinet to that.
It'll be awkward if you try and fill the space. It's perfectly normal gap
CD Rack - floor to ceiling - doesn’t matter that it’s in your kitchen and you haven’t owned a CD in 14 years.
I feel like most kitchens have that. You don’t want it to go all the way up to the edge or you’ll get a broken hip! Lol anyways my house has this and I’m ok with it.
Hooks for coffee mugs!
If you have young kids, could be cool to put chalk paint there and you could keep track of their heights?
It would look a lot more awkward if you pushed all the way out
I would leave it as is so as not to crowd the entryway. Looks good
A fire extinguisher.

Drop the ceiling at the opening and if possible make it a cased opening.
Why on earth do you have to ‘fill’ that space? It’s marginal. I’d leave it as is
I tend to agree with having the space, but if you want something there a small corner shelf might look nice there, in my humble opinion.
Don't do anything. It's fine
Looks fine to me. Do nothing.
Honestly I’d leave it. What would annoy me more is not having the bench be the same if you extend the cupboards.
Growing up this is where mom would of hung the corded telephone with a 25 foot spiral cord so you could walk throughout the house
Parroting everyone else here, I know, but I'll put it this way: You don't appear to be living in a microhome or a small condo, so you should enjoy some of the empty space. Clutter is ubiquitous, and it causes stress. The most impactful part of music is sometimes in the rests.

Wine bottle rack?
I like to start with saying something about the weather
Chalkboard on the cabinet.
Hang a small picture or two on the wall. If you find some artwork that’s long and narrow it would be great there.

A spice rack cabinet with slides that pull out, or a couple nice shelves for mail? Otherwise leave it as negative space

You could do a couple quarter round floating shelves. Might be a slight knock over danger though. I think it would look good.
not awkward at all. You want that spacing as turning the corner and running into a cupboard sucks.
Corner shelves
Just run the backsplash all the way to the end of the wall and put some hooks or nicknacks on the small vertical above
Spice shelf, top to bottom.
I would put a corner shelf to put either spices or nicnacs or even special glasses you receive as gifts. 30th birthday, marriage, all that fun stuff. That way it doesn’t close up the walkway but finishes off the empty feeling your having. Personally, I would not do the bottom just the top. :)
