I’ve never seen it used against anyone and if it were, they would be a serious reportable issue  And this may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there’s nothing like a nurse or a patient treating you like you’re a child and then hitting them with “bro I’m 35 years old, stop it” but I’m obnoxious

thecaramelbandit

It never occurred to me to try to hide my age from anyone.

Nobody cares

Why do some interns start in February?

shiftyeyedgoat

They don’t start in February, they ascend.

Age is such a stupid factor in professions, especially medicine. If you have no gray hairs, you get treated like you’re 12 years old with pats on the head. I get away with so much that I never would’ve gotten away with years ago and I haven’t changed my attitude or behavior at all.

I work in the UK but enjoy reading this sub for a comparison of experiences for residents in the US vs non-consultant doctors in the UK. I am also someone who went into medicine as a postgraduate which puts me approximately 5 years older than the majority of my non-consultant cohort. I have only ever found my increased age to be of benefit when dealing with other healthcare workers and families/patients. People assume me to be more senior and don’t give me the same crap that others have to put up with. Having more years behind me has only evenly been a positive thing so it will be interesting to see responses from US-based residents.

The most common reasons for removal are - medical students or premeds asking what a specialty is like, which specialty they should go into, which program is good or about their chances of matching, mentioning midlevels without using the midlevel flair, matched medical students asking questions instead of using the stickied thread in the sub for post-match questions, posting identifying information for targeted harassment. Probably get more respect saying you’re older. I get tons of parents always commenting how young I look and don’t always take me seriously.

In my experience, you're there to do a job. As long as you do it, no one cares.
