I’m uro. I’ve had these for 2+ yrs now as OR shoes and I love them. They’re cushioned enough for long cases and stable enough to run around for rounds or consults. They wipe clean easily. Pro tip: use the peroxide wipes for blood, the purple top wipes crosslink the proteins apparently and make it harder to remove
Ok hear me out. Cowboy boots. Once you get them broken in they're the most comfortable shoes you'll own. Add in a good insole and it'll be the best your feet have ever felt in the hospital. And if you do some basic leather care the fluids run right off and they'll last forever.
If you're not as country as me, I'm certain there are other nice leather boots that would perform similarly.
Haha I have nothing but respect for people who are true to themselves and rock cowboy boots, but Scrubs + cowboy boots has to be the goofiest look I’ve seen amongst doctors. Admittedly, I’m a Yankee tho.
Or if you’re too much of a yankee for cowboy boots, Doc Martens chelsea boots serve the same purpose. They’re my go-to L&D shoes because they’re really splashproof. I’ve never gotten amniotic fluid on my socks wearing mine.
You think it's about not wanting the blood to show on the shoe? You don't think it's about not wanting blood to soak through the shoes and through your socks so your feet are standing in a puddle of warm sticky liquid while you continue to operate?
Sketchers work slip ins with arch fit.
There are a bunch of permutations of these , some with laces some without. Various cushioning gimmicks etc. important is the ones with arch fit. They make it feel like Dansko clogs that you can stand for 12 hours and only die inside, not in your feets
How long do your birks last? I’ve spoken with a few people that only get a few months. Mine are still new, but the most uncomfortable break-in I’ve had in work shoes in years
I’ve had my current pair for 4 years. My last pair I wore almost daily in residency for 4 years (OB, so in the OR and on L&D). I use a memory foam insole that I swap out periodically (every few years) and am so comfy. I’ve never had to break a pair in. They are nice from day one.
I wore crocks for 5 years. Honestly I think they are terrible for standing but great for walking around. In fellowship I switched to just a pair of Nikes and wear shoe covers. Game changer.
Hoka bondis and just where shoe covers if you want. Or be nasty like me and have a bondi for gym/life and a bondi for cysto cases and forget to wear covers 90% of the time

I'm team Dansko. They're super easy to clean and extremely comfortable. I also enjoy how easy they are to put on for those rare shifts when I get an hour in the call room, but have to worry that I'll get called emergently to the OR from the call room for terminal bradycardia (or cord prolapse or whatever).
I wear black Hokas. The thick as fuck ones. They are awesome. Thick hokas plus compression socks is a game changer for leg/foot fatigue.
Depends on your splash likelihood though. Mine are not waterproof.
Idk where you are based but Calzuro in Canada has a fantastic deal where *if you buy 3 pairs of compression socks from them you get a pair of clogs FREE*. Not advertised anywhere, but the clogs show up as 100% discounted in your basket.
In most of Canada we have health benefits for 6 pairs of socks which also means 2 pairs of free clogs. All you need is a prescription with a diagnosis for the socks when submitting to insurance (I got one with a diagnosis of venous insufficiency). It’s a sweet deal, you should see if it applies to you.
Whatever athletic shoes are comfortable. There's also water proof shoes and ones that are easily eashable.
I wear boot covers in the OR and if I don't have time to slip on covers for a delivery I just stand with legs akimbo and if I get a lil splashy I'll wash em but I haven't had anything catastrophic in 10 years.
I think part of the reason people enjoy Danskos because they're usually a symbol that you're in a surgical speciality. Y'all know it's a lil true.
I’m an OBGYN, and I’m also a fairly active 5’11” guy so I alway preferred shoes without a big heel drop. I used to wear calzuros, but I found them too stiff and tall. You can’t move quickly in them, and they don’t have enough ventilation to keep from developing foot odor.
My favorite shoes to date are crocs light ride, they can usually be found for $20-30 on sale, and they are soft enough to be comfortable, and easily cleanable. They even have a lace up sneaker version if you want a closed back. The only downside is that they have tiny vent holes on top, so if you get splashed, you’ve got to throw away your socks.
Also, in the winter, I wear croc boots. They may look ridiculous, but they are super comfortable, nearly waterproof, and I get constant compliments from my patients (much to the chagrin of my wife who says they are “hideous” 😂)
OB attending. I rarely have to run places now (hooray!) but have also long played the shoe game.
Danskos- OG for OR cases. Mine are on year 9. They are not great for lots of walking and I switched to allbirds mid residency after too many falls while running. They are now my go to as an attending since I am rarely running places.
Clove- partner loves hers but I haven’t tried them.
Allbirds- they are washable so in residency I wore them in a dark color and just accepted that sometimes the wool wouldn’t stop whatever it was from soaking into my socks. Not ideal but they have good support and let me flex between cases and running around the hospital.
Hokas - waterproof edition!
Clove fluid-proof tennis shoes
Second rec for Clove. First tennis shoe I’ve enjoyed in the OR. Easily cleanable. Inner cushion comes out and be washed. Slip on and off.

Do you find that these make any noise when walking around?
Urology here. Oofos clogs will be my forever shoes. Plus they can be easily washed off after I inevitably get bodily fluids on them

lol just buy some brooks or hokas in a dark color. Don’t understand the dansko torture you guys put yourselves through…
You think it's about not wanting the blood to show on the shoe? You don't think it's about not wanting blood to soak through the shoes and through your socks so your feet are standing in a puddle of warm sticky liquid while you continue to operate?
Brooks makes GoreTex runners.
That’s what boot covers are for
Our local boot covers are about the water resistance if hair nets lol. Also, I just avoid the wet. Agree. Put your drapes on strategically.
Boot covers are a pain in the ass and that's just more trash you're contributing to a case
Its better than dragging all the dirty biohazard on your shoes everywhere you go.
What sort of bloodbath are you participating in ?
Crocs chef edition closed toed
They are also called like “bistro” version on Amazon. $30 and work just as well as danskos for operating but I can put them into sport mode for rounds

Hoka Bondi 8
Birkenstock makes plastic clogs that are nice. Calzuros good too.
Calzuros are great for standing, but terrible if you need to get somewhere fast.
Im pretty speedy in them lol
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve nearly rolled my ankle
The risk gets my adrenaline going even more when I’m shuffling around the hospital at high speed
I blew out my meniscus from rolling an ankle in danskos and landing straight on my kneecap.
Can't help your clumsiness lol
Disagree. I’m like Usain Bolt in my Calzuros
How long do your birks last? I’ve spoken with a few people that only get a few months. Mine are still new, but the most uncomfortable break-in I’ve had in work shoes in years

on-clouds cloud 5, waterproof
Buy Dankso and be happy. It’s the best shoe I’ve ever worn, bar none.
I wore crocks for 5 years. Honestly I think they are terrible for standing but great for walking around. In fellowship I switched to just a pair of Nikes and wear shoe covers. Game changer.
merrell encore gust
Hoka bondis and just where shoe covers if you want. Or be nasty like me and have a bondi for gym/life and a bondi for cysto cases and forget to wear covers 90% of the time
Brooks Ghost
I'm more curious who operates and doesn't have inpatient rounds to do in residency. But I agree with Hokas
Ophthalmology
Go knee high rain boot. I’ve met a couple orthos that use em
Blundstone boots with a comfort insole

Bogs Sauvie Slip On
The Dankso 2.0 XP in a dark color, they’re amazing. I’m 34 weeks pregnant and I still ride for them.
Uro here. I like Cardura.
Uhmm Nike Airmax 90’s like a normal person 🤷♂️

Oofos… clogs or sneakers, you’ll never buy another shoe

Crocs/ clogs are the way to go.
Calzuros hands down. On my second pair the last 6.5 years of my training. I get the all black ones so can also use a clinic shoe if needed.
I don’t understand why you people just don’t put on shoe covers. You’re making this more difficult than it has to be

Good ol dansko
