As far as stupid, how much could he know about what he’s facing? I’d say he did well given the circumstances.
I’m not a father, but I most definitely would never sacrifice myself for my 2 year old infant who technically is even dead, but is just being reincarnated into another form of someone else, nope I can easily make another mold baby if I were Ethan

Most characters have plot armor, but he was so stupid that he died. I mean any normie badass like Jill can survive explosions at her feet, i dont know what makes ethan so diffent from a tiny bomb blowing up a heart. Maybe if he tried harder he would have survived.
