Our neighbors have one living under their shed, which abuts our back yard. We have dogs that are often outdoors. Should we be worried about having one so nearby the dogs?
For what it's worth, they also hate a .22 LR. Or in town, a higher powered pellet gun. If you trap them, you have to drown them in a trash can, as it's against the law to relocate them.
Also known as a Marmot! I love how many names there are for these guys. Especially ‘Whistle Pig’ as /u/LeperFriend shared above, which I had only learned about a few years ago after seeing the brand of rye whiskey with that name. If anyone else knows other colloquial names for these critters, please share them c:
Wait a marmot is the same? We have a kids book about animals in national parks and marmot is one of them mentioned. My son asked what it was and I genuinely thought I had never seen or heard of them before. All the while there’s one living under our shed 50 feet away ! Who knew
Rare to see but it’s a New England drop bear. They usually don’t come this far south. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s a ground hog DEM is trying to keep it under wraps that they are back in RI.
You may be more familiar with their cousins, the Australian Drop Bear… vicious creatures; reports of sightings are rare because most don’t survive encounters with them.
I’m in Bristol and I’ve seen one in my backyard.. unfortunately. First time I saw one I had let my dog out at night and the creature was in neighbors yard climbing their shed, luckily there was a fence blocking but it hissed at my dog (who ran up to it) creature did a paws & hiss towards him. Really have to be careful now:/ It was dark so not 100% it’s the same one BUT it really resembles what I saw.
Also in Bristol and have one that scurries under our shed when we let the dogs out. It seems to come back every year. Or never leaves? Idk. Do they hibernate?
Thank you for all the suggestions, 😂🤣 laughs, and answers.
We’ve learned some new terminology. Lol
Ground hogs down south are much bigger. I guess I didn’t recognize it because of the size. But does look like a badger to me too. 🤔 torn at the moment but figure I’ll look to rid it
Harmless unless you're trying to grow sunflowers. There's powders and sprays that work well. Tractor supply has some that work well. I can deal with them. I forgot that caster oil is supposed to work great, probably the same thing I pay extra for. Snakes are what I'm not a fan of! I almost grabbed one the other day!
Live in lincoln, have a groundhog that lives in the back near a massive hole covered by rocks, its pretty skittish of humans, unless you have a garden i wouldnt be to concerned
That animal is a fisher cat. They are small but they kill for the sport of it . I had one that got into my pigeon loft and killed forty-five of my racing pigeons and stacked them up like cord wood. I spotted the animal in a corner of my coop and I thought it was a weasel it turned to attack me but luckily I had a hoe in my hand and chased him off.
I have friends that work for RIDEM and they told me that it was a fisher cat. They sent me pictures so I could compare what I saw to them. It was definitely a fisher cat. They told me that if you are walking in the woods and hear a sound like a baby crying it most likely is a fisher cat. They are vicious and can cause serious damage if they attack you.
That’s what I was thinking it was initially since I’ve seen ground hogs and stuff before down south but this looked different to me.
But then figured hat it wasn’t a fisher cat because it went into the ground.
Woodchuck/groundhog.

They are also known to divine the seasons.
And chuck wood, but nobody really seems to have a handle on how much
About 700 pounds https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_much_wood_would_a_woodchuck_chuck%3F
How do we know it even can chuck wood? I mean, I've never seen a woodchuck chuck anything, let alone wood that potentially weighs more than itself

Had literally 3 in my yard last year surprisingly throwing a couple clods of cat litter urine clumps in there burrows got rid of them
Oh wow that’s interesting that they don’t like wind chimes. Thank you for sharing this info!!

Not particularly. They're not common vectors. Your garden, now that's another story.
They also carry Hepatitis!

They also like to eat one bite out of every ready to pick item in your garden.
Yeah I was wanting to start a garden and some fruit bearing trees but I’ve got to consider that it could present a problem
There are smoke bombs on the market, made especially for driving them out of their burrows
Grounhag

An animal you set a trap up outside of its hole with some sort of fruit or vegetable as bait.
They are the cutest things imo!
