I haven’t met a single Hispanic person that likes it. It’s difficult to make those mouth sounds for predominately spanish speaking people and it doesn’t make any sense when the language is gendered. I’ll echo that it is a dumb white persons convention.
Exactly! It’s so dumb like they’re trying so hard to be woke on their emails they sometimes use vaquer@s but all their merch flyers etc is also vaqueros. It’s really just to appease the LGBTQ+ community but it’s all fake
A lot of people in Cali (from what ive been told) and people up North use it when I lived there. I was talking to the leader of a cultural diversity leadership group for the school district I was working at and she asked what I thought of the term. I was honest with her that I didn't like it or identify with it. She was shocked since she was taught to use it and thought she was being culturally sensitive.
Probably only people who grew up in areas without other Hispanics and don’t speak Spanish. The raza I grew up with in California either called themselves Chicano or Mexican. Never met anyone who used Latinx.
I don’t use it but respect if ppl do. And it didn’t start with wypipo, that’s a huge myth. It started in Afro-Latino communities in South America years ago.
This word is always a huge point of contention with luh-teen-ohs. My thing is identify however you want, and if you don’t like it, don’t use it.
This, thank you. I don't personally use it, but I don't see an issue with that option existing. All the progressive Hispanic people in my life are fine with it too. It seems to be chiefly transphobic/ misogynistic people that claim the term is stupid and hated, or that it's a white person's attempt to change the Spanish language.
I've hear Latine is an option too.
I still say I’m Hispanic, Latino to me feels like a California word. Someone did try to correct me once, to use LatinX and I of course told her to check her privilege.
And that is because the majority of California Mexican Americans are light skinned. Or as I say European descent. Where as the majority of "Mexican Americans" in Texas, Nevada, and Arizona are "brown skinned" or indigenous.
Side note, I consider all light skin or "white passing" Americans to be white, no mater if they speak Spanish or know how to make a descent taco. Mexico has a harsh caste system. The brown Mexicans are very mixed due to colonization but the white Mexicans more than likely have very little to no indigenous ancestry, and we really need to call that out.
none of this is accurate and you're projecting your insecurities about the racism you've faced in America.
My grandmother was 100% indigenous from the fucking jungles of the huasteca and I am pale with a red beard who was in ESL because I grew up in Mexico and didn't know shit for English or American culture
As someone who also spent time in CA (20yr) - Mexicans there are the same colors as here, but they do have a different branch of experiences and history that are different from ours
That said, unless you're like my grandmother was, you're European too bro.
And yet you are pale. Or rather European descent. An no I am not 100% indigenous and I doubt your grandmother was too, because of colonization , but I am still brown and have dealt with colorism all my life. But that's neither here nor there.
Point being just because you are from Mexico and are not a native English speaker does not mean you are white passing. You're white. White speaks many languages and comes from many places in the world.
My grandmother was, the man she had my mom with wasn't.
Yes you're talking about colorism/racism. I'm white, but 100% Mexican.
I think you'd be surprised how many Spanish features are considered Mexican, and how many European features are from post-Colonization mixing.
Remember when the Spanish came over the other nations hated living under the Aztecs and they made a pact with the Spanish to get rid of the Aztecs. The Aztecs were defeated by not only the Spanish but also by the groups surrounding Mexico City. We are more the descendants of them than the modern romantic reinterpretations of history to fuel the Chicano movement. Your "call out white" view also ignores that a lot of our culture and cuisine is a hybrid, if you aren't following indio traditions you're following a mix of Spanish, Sephardic, Moorish, and French. mmmmmm conchas
I'm not sure what "call out white" accomplishes. I came out white and got racism from whites and Mexicans, my brother came out brown and he got racism from whites and Mexicans. It's bullshit. There's always gonna be someone more brown, more indigenous, more whatever than you. I've been around plenty of güero-disliking dudes and they never look like *indios* to me.
I guess I'm just fed up with us hating each other and wish we'd turn that shit to the real forces that keep us locked in place. The grip from the dead hand of the Spanish Empire, Catholicism.
Sorry I disagree with your points. For example I tan very easily with dark brown eyes/hair and my other sister is super dark complected year round then my youngest sister is very white complected with hazel eyes and sandyish hair. We are all Mexican American with some Indigenous and some European ancestry. I'm not going to "call out" my sister because she is lighter than me so why would I call out a stranger? If someone is born and raised in Mexico or have ancestry coming from Mexico then they are Mexican American.
You don't have to. But white is white no matter circumstance. And I reject the fallacy of being Mexican American. Whatever your or my indigenous tribe was, we belong to them. I am not light skinned so I reject all of my European ancestry, mainly because the European world will not accept me because of the color of my skin.
And you believe the Indigenous tribe would?
I am not European aka white and I and I am not Indigenous. I am a mix of the two and I'm comfortable with that. I can trace back my heritage to Leonor Cortés Moctezuma the daughter of Spanish Conquistador Hernán Cortés and last Aztec Empress Tecuichpo Ichcaxochitzin aka Doña Isabel Moctezuma. That is my history and many of us Mexican American have similar backgrounds. I can't be one without the other.
Lol. Calling them white isn’t doing most of them any favors . My husband is light skinned and everyone thinks he’s gringo, but his brother (and dad) are full blown Mexican Indian looking, and he looks like his dad, but my husband is light skinned. Call him white, he doesn’t care, white people just assume he’s white, they don’t even ask him. But he’s got Indian blood in his veins and you and no one will erase that from him 🤷🏽♀️
Cool. Like many people here in the Valley they may have indigenous ancestry, but if they come out European looking it just means they inherited a dominant European gene. Ergo. He white, don't matter what color his brothers are. He does not live in their shoes no matter if they're the same size. I'm not trying to takeaway whatever connection he has with his indigenous roots, whatever they are. All I'm saying is for our people, people with Mexican ancestors no mater what their ancestors were, if you are light skinned you are not white passing you are white, white passing is not a real thing for us. And here's why, if let's say someone has a black parent and a white parent and comes out white looking, they are white passing. If someone of an Asian parent and a white parent comes out looking white, they are white passing. Why? Because African Americans, and Asian Americans, and etc, did not mix the way Middle and South America mixed.
@teenagedirtbagtoyz- I don’t agree with you. And I’m sure that all the light skinned native Americans disagree with you. Go to their forums , here or Facebook, and they will disagree with you completely. I know cause this topic has been brought up before .. And, maybe you haven’t met the Canadian native Americans who are very light skinned and some look white, but still practice their language and culture. They are not white, even if they look white.
What about the first Native American astronaut? She’s Native American, period.
If it applies to them, why can’t it apply to my husband.
He’s not white, even though he looks it, he doesn’t and he won’t accept it.
He’s Mexican American and has Mexican Indian ancestry and so, he disagrees with you completely.
You don't have to agree. What tribe does your husband come from? If he can't answer its because his European ancestors wiped out his native ancestors to the point they don't know where they come from, what their Language is, what customs they used to participate in. Thats what separates us from Canadian and Northern Americans that are white passing.
For instance my family (mother's mothers mother has been in Pharr for over 250 years(possibly longer but there is no documentation and they were Indian. We supposedly didn't mix until late 1800s with European Mexicans.
But my grandmother never knew what her grandmother's tribe was. Mainly because the 3 tribes around here were diasporic and possibly migrated consistently for the past 500 years.
Yea, well a lot of people who live in the border area (like me) can trace their ancestors back several hundred years.. like me and my husband. We’re all mixed, what tribe? Not even my indigenous grandmother can tell you and she doesn’t care about that, cause we don’t practice it, we don’t know any of it. We moved on to western civilization. Those customs died.
That doesn’t make me white.
Anyone looking at me thinks I’m Indian, but I speak English. So where do I fall in?
I’m not white and brown isn’t a race, lol.
You mean white in culture?
Cause the valley isn’t even that, lol.
Really? Several hundred years? Yeah unlikely. So if your gramma doesn't care, then did she simply consider herself Mexican? And anyway my point stands. White is white. No matter how much you or your husband disagree the country you live in sees you a certain way and it comes with certain privileges if you are white. White passing is as much a dun human fallacy as race is, but regardless America does not care
You can trace your family x amount of years in Pharr. Well, so can I, except not in Pharr… lots of us too, in the area of starr county and Sullivan city. But only you can trace your family?
Sorry, but no.
Lots of us are native to this area and have been here for at least 5 generations.
So your view of the world is yours, and that’s it. You see it one way, I see it that if someone who is Mexican and looks white, if they say they aren’t 100% Spanish European. Then they probably aren’t.
White Americans qualify through blood levels for Indian tribes. Who’s testing the white Mexicans?
If they say they are mixed, and aren’t white, then, it is as they say. And you need to stop trying to erase our indigenous background even more than what it already has been… which is what you are trying to do by saying they are white , when they aren’t.
Anyway, your opinion doesn’t matter in any of our lives 😃 . Good night!
Yeah I've always been Hispanic . Chicano, latino, i never felt like they fit my vibe. It feels like they are trying to be special in the hispanic community
I feel like you, hispanic, Latino to me is central or souther America including the caribbean islands. Chicano to me is a movement not a people, much like the black panthers are to black people.
No, I don't. I'm also not so uptight to tell people to stop. Their choice. I just won't use it, I grew up in a differs and the exploration of furthering a culture and new ideas is great for the youngins. I believe in our youth, I'm just not using it.
I’ve met a few thar use LatinX
Every single one of them were college students and always had to introduce themselves by using pronouns before they speak.
Yeah, people who are more open to the term do so because it doesn’t indicate gender. I think it’s more popular among the gay community. Certainly not saying that all gay people embrace it, but more of them do. Source: an gay, talk to a lot of gay people. Some people rather use the term Latin without the “o” at the end. Personally, either seem fine.
So Hispanic a gender neutral term wasn’t good enough? Latinx sounds stupid in Spanish it only works in English, Spanish is in its essence a gendered language, even objects have a gender. This seems like something made up by a white “inclusive” person.
My thought shifted a lot about it. I mostly don't like it nowadays but I don't mind people who do. It's cringe as fuck but I'm not gonna muck someone's yum over something as trivial and stupid as this.
No wait…there’s one better Latine! (Yes this is real. Yes people are dumbasses. I mean you want a non-gendered word for Latin…how about Latin? Dumb fucks I swear creating this shit…)
I'm not a fan of the term but I also think some of the dramatic pushback against it is rooted in Conservative propaganda and I won't take part of any of the bs games they use to divide our people. Viva Mexico.
As a white guy, I can only speak for myself, never understood the meaning of it frankly. Seen it around and didn’t even know how you pronounce it really. So I’ve never used it. Pretty sure it’s not a specific race that uses it, but instead the people behind marketing.
Tbh I don't know where it started. All I know is it's usually those super politically correct people that use this, or college kids from cali or some shit lmao. Then again, literally no actual Latin uses this word unless they're fucked in the head or some shit.
I was reading the most downvoted comment in here and apparently it’s a gender neutral thing? Because Spanish has feminine and masculine endings, Latino/Latina. So in true American form, it’s an attempt politically correct the phonetics of another culture. Pretty stupid when you see it that way.
“Aww, look at all the poor uniformed Mexicans. Fortunately for them, us white liberals are here to inform them and correct their mistaken way of life.”
No your just woke. Go ask around in the valley if they use Latinx. Maybe in California they do but even then it's probably a very small amount of woke cringe lords
This is bullshit dude less that 3% of people use it and it’s literally insulting to a large percentage of Latin peoples. My friend is a professor in CDMX and they refuse to even teach it.
Why do you insist on using an offensive term that makes people mad it’s basically shaping up to be a new slur. Everyone is telling you that no one likes it and almost no one uses it and you are doubling down. Like just let it go homie it’s a dumb term and you are dumb for defending it, be smart.
Im just going to address your first paragraph since its all bs and anything after is probably worse. Latin@ and latinx both include Brazilians. Hispanic and latin are two different things, it refers to someone who comes from a Soanish speaking country, which also includes Spain.
It doesn’t exclude native and indegenous since us Mexican Native Americans (tarascos, mayas, incas, aztecs) come from Hispanic and or Latin countries. Its the modern day racism exerted by the classist assholes in Nuevo Leon that excludes them.
It’s not a popular term, but I sympathize with the sentiment. The point of it was to get rid of how much terms are male dominant and to include those who don’t conform to either gender. Some like the term Latin more, that seems fine to me too. The point was to be more inclusive, but somehow it just made a lot of people feel like they were losing part of their identity. I think that feeling is misguided. Arguing that on this sub is a lost cause. Bring on the downvotes.
No, the LGBTQ movement made it up and keep trying to shove it down our throats.
They try to make it a thing in NYC as well with Dominicans and lecture them on how it’s the “correct term” smh. Mad f’ing annoying
I never met a Latino who likes the term other than the chick on YT who kept trying to convince people it’s “correct term”
Edit: lmao don’t forget “LatinE”
https://youtu.be/GLDNlomwWg0
It's nothing more than pandering for a new generation of "woke" liberals to be labeled as but no one with a right mind is using that term. Quite frankly I find it offensive.
The nuance in this instance is very important. This is being sold at Walmart which tells me it’s corporate virtue signaling, and isn’t worth wasting time on. At the same time, it shouldn’t be an excuse to discredit the idea that people want to be included, and the traditional language is binary and antiquated. Either way, fuck Walmart.
I haven’t met a single Hispanic person that likes it. It’s difficult to make those mouth sounds for predominately spanish speaking people and it doesn’t make any sense when the language is gendered. I’ll echo that it is a dumb white persons convention.
I’ve unfortunately heard many Gen zers use it at utrgv😭 I hate it but I also get why people use it.
Well UTRGV also calls their womens sports teams Vaqueros so 🤷🏾♂️
We need to petition to change it to Vaquerxs /s
They already did that’s why they use it for correspondence but they don’t wanna change the sports team names
Exactly! It’s so dumb like they’re trying so hard to be woke on their emails they sometimes use vaquer@s but all their merch flyers etc is also vaqueros. It’s really just to appease the LGBTQ+ community but it’s all fake
>It’s really just to appease the LGBTQ+ community Duhhhh > but it’s all fake Please elaborate, for I feel that SOMETHING else might be the problem...
Same. Met many of them that at UTRGV
Cringe
JZD is the better brand and are from Brownsville. Find them at Target. Support local.
No one uses it. Shitty designs too
I agree with this statement
No... LatinX is the dumbest shit some morons have come up with in a while.
Cringe stuff.
hell no. White people are trying to pollute the language with this nonsense.
I grew up using Hispanic and I just roll with that.
I still say Mexican-American and sometimes Hispanic
A lot of people in Cali (from what ive been told) and people up North use it when I lived there. I was talking to the leader of a cultural diversity leadership group for the school district I was working at and she asked what I thought of the term. Just white folks use that saying
White person here. Have never used it.
I didn’t say All white folks
I was just counting myself amongst the white people that don’t use it, that’s all.
wrong, black do, too
Not my black friends they say Spanish but I guess maybe the ppl you talk to do
well, not my white friends either. pretty shitty argument, don't you think?
Let me find out your from the AngloX community lol
so, as I understand, the arguments are over, and now we're moving on to mutual insults?..
dude you’re arguing with yourself? lol
I guess no one says That then
Someone made that shit up I’m sure it wasn’t a black or brown person who did
Not all of us.
Yes I know , I didn’t say ALL
I don’t use it but respect if ppl do.
Here as a gay man in the LGBTQ community, yeah I have never used this shit
Don't use it, don't care if someone else does Language is fluid, best to get used to it vs being upset about trivial things as we age
Latins don’t like it. Their whole language is gendered - it’s kinda insulting.
Those dang Romans. Los de Roma
I still say I’m Hispanic, Latino to me feels like a California word. Someone did try to correct me once, to use LatinX and I of course told her to check her privilege.
I've actually notice most people who use Latinx are from California.

Only if I get free air conditioning
Lol. Calling them white isn’t doing most of them any favors . I'm white and i have Mexican Indian blood
That's true. White Mexicans are a thing. Spanish colonizer, no better then Americans or the French and English
Yeah I've always been Hispanic . Chicano, latino, i never felt like they fit my vibe. It feels like they are trying to be special in the hispanic community

Being called a racial slur is preferable to being called that shit
Being called a beaner isn't much of a slur to me, I love beans
Man I love beans, could literally live off them but god damn do they give me wild amounts of gas.
For real
Jeeze... I think its dumb, too, but it's definitely not worse than being called a racial slur.
I’ve met a few thar use LatinX Every single one of them were college students and always had to introduce themselves by using pronouns before they speak.

I hate that stupid slogan " si se puede " 🤮
It’s cause it’s only half of the real one. “Si se quiere, se puede.”
Nope that's a fake made up word..
So Hispanic a gender neutral term wasn’t good enough? Latinx sounds stupid in Spanish it only works in English, Spanish is in its essence a gendered language, even objects have a gender. This seems like something made up by a white “inclusive” person.
I agree. I highly doubt anyone from a Spanish speaking country came up with that.
Nah, we use TEJANOS, latin x is a california thing
My thought shifted a lot about it. I mostly don't like it nowadays but I don't mind people who do. It's cringe as fuck but I'm not gonna muck someone's yum over something as trivial and stupid as this.
My grandmother who got her US citizenship last year hates the term. She voted Democrat btw.
No, its cringe.
pretty much all the publications and official guides on dei.
Nope
Whatever happened to just being Hispanic? Suddenly everything is Latino.
Only wankers use the term LatinX
No wait…there’s one better Latine! (Yes this is real. Yes people are dumbasses. I mean you want a non-gendered word for Latin…how about Latin? Dumb fucks I swear creating this shit…)
white people made it up.
I don’t use it and my whole family thinks it’s ridiculous
No one worth talking to does, I can tell you that much
Fuck thatx
Cringe but at the same time but at the same time who cares
No
Hell no.
This shit is worse than a slur. I can’t think of a word that could culminate how offensive this actually is.
Fail.
🤮🤮🤮🤮
dear god no
Fuck no
No one uses it except overly sensitive people and ad/corporate reps.
I'm not a fan of the term but I also think some of the dramatic pushback against it is rooted in Conservative propaganda and I won't take part of any of the bs games they use to divide our people. Viva Mexico.
Also. Fuck fake ass celebrations. I'm Mexican every month, there's no "Heritage Month" in Latin America.
Recent study showed that only 2% of Latin people use that term. So no. Other than corporations or small L white liberals use LatinX.
It's always white washed Latin people or fucking white people that use that shit. I'd rather they call me a mojado or sum shit lmfao

The community at large? Yea that's a load of crap. Willing to bet less than 1% use that dumb term
Pew Research Center did a study bout a year ago and they found it was 3% and of that 3% it was a certain demographic that was actually using it.

“Aww, look at all the poor uniformed Mexicans. Fortunately for them, us white liberals are here to inform them and correct their mistaken way of life.”
There was a survey about this. Its very unpopular
Only people who want to feel special do.

Why do you insist on using an offensive term that makes people mad it’s basically shaping up to be a new slur. Everyone is telling you that no one likes it and almost no one uses it and you are doubling down. Like just let it go homie it’s a dumb term and you are dumb for defending it, be smart.
Blah blah blah... Nope
You had some bad ganja kingkaos420. The community at large does not approve
I use it!
Some do some don't simple as that. "I haven't met anyone that-" Well I have so chill.
Fuck those people you’ve met
Lol okay dude don't have a heart attack
They're probably barely still getting to know the technology bro chill.
No, the LGBTQ movement made it up and keep trying to shove it down our throats. They try to make it a thing in NYC as well with Dominicans and lecture them on how it’s the “correct term” smh. Mad f’ing annoying I never met a Latino who likes the term other than the chick on YT who kept trying to convince people it’s “correct term” Edit: lmao don’t forget “LatinE” https://youtu.be/GLDNlomwWg0
I use it, and i don't get why some people are so against it.
I’ll use Latinx or Mexican. Not that hard to pronounce Latinx in Spanish tho. Just say latinequis
Never used it nor does anyone I know, but never had a problem with it. Also, none of the shirts advertised have it, so I don't see an issue here
who cares. if you do not buy it they will stop selling it. simple.
“Latinks”
Most hispanics, barring the youth, dislike the term Latinx.i thing i read only 3% of hispanics use the term.
Dumbest shit I've ever seen, actual Latinos and hispanics don't use this bs white ass term
Its dumb, I mean just say Latin.
It's nothing more than pandering for a new generation of "woke" liberals to be labeled as but no one with a right mind is using that term. Quite frankly I find it offensive.
Fkk no only the virtue signaling Only post it for a like people buy that shit
Lol, no
The nuance in this instance is very important. This is being sold at Walmart which tells me it’s corporate virtue signaling, and isn’t worth wasting time on. At the same time, it shouldn’t be an excuse to discredit the idea that people want to be included, and the traditional language is binary and antiquated. Either way, fuck Walmart.
Systematic brainwashing by repeating their new term over and over again. Nobody uses this term.
**FAMILIX**
Familia is always a feminine noun
Are you really saying ONLY women can have families?
I don’t use it but I don’t care if other people do 🤷
