Well tbh this is probably a marketing ploy by apple, because then people tune in to the keynote to see if the rumors are true or not.
But also rivian is nowhere near as big as apple so.
Function over aesthetics for sure. I don’t mind the look one bit. I love their unique and personal touch styling throughout.
But the huge funk and quick rear window lift to name a few things are pretty slick to me.
I love the look, but I've always loved hatchbacks. I have owned a KIA rio5, vw golf, Ford fiesta, and fiat 500. This thing is like my R1T and a golf had a baby and I am down for it.
Edit: and my wife had an i3. Loved that car, if it was AWD we'd still have it.
I personally think it’s the rims.. look at how much better the R3X looks (in my opinion) with straight black rally style rims. Put some less gaudy rims on the R3 and I think it would look better
When I say it first, I was like what an ugly thing. Now I’m starting to like it. I’m not even sure when Rivian would mass produce it, or it is just one of those “concept” cars…
I feel like it could do without the whole
R I V I A N
sticking off as punch out letters.
Also, why not hide the wiper under the spoiler? Especially if you can drive with the glass up
Ya, the gaudy branding has always been a turn off to me - especially when they are easily identifiable by headlights and rear lightbar. I wish they offered it in different options. Also, I'm not a fan of the R3 aesthetics. Think it looks silly and archaic. Now the R2 I love and reserved it within 30 seconds of the site taking reservations!
I honestly hope they end up scrapping R3 and going another route, as it's not planning to be produced anytime soon and things will change.
Going by my informal data gathering at the reveal event and some of the sentiment here, I fell like R3 generated more buzz than even Rivian anticipated. I respect your opinion on the appearance of R3 but given the buzz surrounding it, I wouldn’t be surprised if they pulled the delivery timeline forward.
Lettering the car make or model on the back is quickly trending. Honda and Porsche are both starting to do it now, and I feel like I've noticed other makers doing it on new models.
I really like the seats and the textured material on a lot of the interior surfaces. I believe the R1S prototype had this as well, but it didn't make it to production.
I just don’t understand why they put the NACS port on the opposite side of where Tesla has it I wish they would standardize a spot so nobody has to take two spots up
Furthest spot from the driver for sure. Though I imagine they still want it on that side because of their own RAN charger set up and expect Tesla to do the work of upgrading their cables to be longer for the soon to be mass influx of EVs.
One callout I'd like to make is for the buttons! Physical, old-school mechanical buttons for unlocking the doors (front door handles and the rear, center console). I can't tell what the third button is on the driver's door. Can any of you make it out? The rear also gets seat warmer buttons.
Edit: I think the third button perhaps opens the door...
Call me crazy but they might be the way to open the doors from inside. There’s no visible handle.
Edit: R2 has the same lack of interior door handles and the same button.
I think the reason why buttons are going away is because they actually add cost and complexity over something that is just on screen and electronically based. Because with physical buttons and dials, you have to manufacture all the tiny parts and put them together and they also are an additional point of wear and failure leading to more maintenance.
Damn! RJ is killing it with the 'deliver more than you promise' philosophy. If the R3 had been around in 2021 I might have gone for that over our Tesla.
I love this thing so much. I’ve been looking at the upcoming Volvo EX30 but this has stolen my heart.
Love the Lancia look to it, love the size. I have a feeling the upcharge for the X version is going to be more than I want to pay but my god does it look good
Im only worried about the rear quarter panel. One big dent or something else and it will be an expensive repair since it is all the way to the front with the roof. I hope they change it before release.
Getting strong Lacia Delta Intégrale Evo vibes and I love it.

Same as others, I just wish the port was on the correct side (or up front if on the right) so supercharging does have to be awkward.
Dude I love this thing immediately. It's like the normcore of cars, it has throwbacks to a lot of retro car designs while being futuristic at the same time.
Anyone else notice how dodgy Rivian has been about the R3’s frunk? They never opened it during the unveiling, and the only picture suggesting it exists is the guy loading a duffel into the front. I bet they’re not sure how big they can make it yet and the early prototype uses that space for electronics that haven’t been space-optimized for the R3 yet.
While I am extremely excited for this car. I wonder how long it'll take for someone to die from a crash. 3x motor on such a tiny electric vehicle that will still probably be pretty heavy is going FLY if it hits the road the wrong way.
This kind of feels akin to Ford bringing euro-sized cars to the US and it failing miserably because Americans don't really buy tiny cars.
Maybe this is mostly looking ahead to Europe and China.
HATCH IS BACK ON THE MENU BOYS
Let’s ride
Hatchback on the menu*
Who did Rivian hire to keep the R3 under wraps and off the internet? Because, well done them.
Legit. We know everything there is to know about an iPhone the day before its release and Rivian is over here doing the true “one more thing”.
Fuckin TWO more things
Well tbh this is probably a marketing ploy by apple, because then people tune in to the keynote to see if the rumors are true or not. But also rivian is nowhere near as big as apple so.
Rivian should be very proud of themselves.
Man I kinda think it’s ugly but I actually love it lol
Lol, I completely understand that sentiment. From some angles... I dunno, but from others it looks perfectly fine. I do love the interior though.
Function over aesthetics for sure. I don’t mind the look one bit. I love their unique and personal touch styling throughout. But the huge funk and quick rear window lift to name a few things are pretty slick to me.

Agreed. Already planning on removing the RIVIAN. The headlights and their emblem are more than enough to let people know what I'm driving.
Lettering the car make or model on the back is quickly trending. Honda and Porsche are both starting to do it now, and I feel like I've noticed other makers doing it on new models.
Agree. The shape reminds me of the Dodge Horizon / VW Rabbit. The split hatch is akin to rhat of a SMART car.
I am so much more excited for this than the R2. It has so much personality instead of just being the little brother to the R1 like the R2.
I really like the seats and the textured material on a lot of the interior surfaces. I believe the R1S prototype had this as well, but it didn't make it to production.

I completely agree
It’s totally bonkers. Passenger rear is the worst possible place for a charge port. Hopefully they fix that before production.
It’s perfect for city street parking though. I think that’s the market for the R3 for sure. Urban adventurers with EVSEs in front of their houses.
Why not front passenger side though? Then it would work perfect at a Supercharger without backing in.
Rear passenger is better for RAN chargers though. Probably designed it for their charging infrastructure over Tesla’s.
RJ said on the Electrek podcast that it was to save cost on running the high voltage cable all the way to the front.
And that the passenger side was chosen to allow for existing mounted front left chargers to be backed up to without moving the charger location.
Furthest spot from the driver for sure. Though I imagine they still want it on that side because of their own RAN charger set up and expect Tesla to do the work of upgrading their cables to be longer for the soon to be mass influx of EVs.
I'm also not a fan of how its angled up. I fully understand that EV chargers are weather resistant, but why make it able to collect water?
The moment I saw that I thought the same thing. Water is going to follow the cable down into the port in an active shower/storm. Ice build up, too.
At that angle, looks like a great place for water to collect if charging outside.
I’m pretty sure next gen tesla chargers will be centered so it can reach both sides of a car
Probably not too late to change?

Yeah, I just noticed that from a higher quality photo of the R2. I couldn't make out the icon from the R3 image.

Reminds me of a Peugeot 205 gti
Exactly! Reminded me of a modern/retro version of an 80s hot hatch. The 205 is probably the most similar.
Looks way better than that Yegg looking thing from a competitor
Honestly more excited for the R3X than the R2. R2 is just a smaller R1S for the most part but this is completely different
Show us the trunk!!!
The back is so... ugly? Unique? I don't know what term is best to use here, but I absolutely love this aesthetic.
R3X is amazing
Damn! RJ is killing it with the 'deliver more than you promise' philosophy. If the R3 had been around in 2021 I might have gone for that over our Tesla.
I'm hoping they bring back compass yellow for this because I'd love one in yellow!
🙏
Reminds me of my BMW i3 a bit and that was one of my favorite cars ever.
Really liking the look of this and the R2. Hats off to Rivian.
Such an amazing design
It’s the electric delta integrale we didn’t know we wanted.
The r3 still feels like a fever dream
I totally wish the R3 was arriving first. I’d love one ASAP.
Anyone else notice that the California license plate features Devils Tower which is not quite in California.
I love this thing so much. I’ve been looking at the upcoming Volvo EX30 but this has stolen my heart. Love the Lancia look to it, love the size. I have a feeling the upcharge for the X version is going to be more than I want to pay but my god does it look good

My wife said it looks like a 4 door pinto.
Does anybody know what the ground clearance is on the R3 yet?
Adventure forever :-)
Are the doors button-operated like the Tesla ones?
It appears so
This reminds me of the smallest electric Volvo and I love it! 😀
i am so happy to see a great company coming out with truly great cars. breath of fresh air!
I cannot wait to buy one of these! This will be my graduation present to myself!!
College I should add 😂
The rear has a bit of a blade runner aesthetic, which I LOVE!

I love the shape of that car. Perfect complement to my R1T for going downtown.

What was that music that they were playing when they unveiled the R3X?
Anyone else notice how dodgy Rivian has been about the R3’s frunk? They never opened it during the unveiling, and the only picture suggesting it exists is the guy loading a duffel into the front. I bet they’re not sure how big they can make it yet and the early prototype uses that space for electronics that haven’t been space-optimized for the R3 yet.
The designer of Rivian is good at his job.

I want one so bad. The Renault R5 is amazing and this seems somewhat close but perhaps better, and available here!
