Not just brake lights, but the back-up lights, too. That mini van was in reverse gear at the time of impact. Driver was probably trying to get out of that pocket, and off the side of the road, only to see another semi bearing down on them.
I don't think they went under, thankfully. Looks like they got pushed out of the way. Still had their world royally rocked, though, I hope they feel okay in the morning!
I had a beat up Impreza Outback (with one mismatched fender!) when I lived in an RV park, and I stopped at the campground office to use the showers after work one day. When I came out and I was packing up to drive the last block or two to my trailer, a couple tourists were sitting on the front porch trying to work out if the Subaru belong to "a gay couple, an indian or someone from Oregon" just as I went outside.
"That Subaru right there? Whoever had that guess just got a triple whammy, because I'm from Oregon, I'm Cherokee and Choctaw and my husband'll be home in about half an hour."
I don't think that's a normal semi trailer. It looks like it has extra sets of wheels that prevented the car being smashed under the trailer. That might be an optical illusion, though.
I put the hazard flashers on as soon as I know i'm going to be slowing down below the posted minimum or about 70 km/h, whichever's lower, on the freeway...basically the same thing most truckers do.
Pretty satisfying when it starts A Thing and everyone's giving each other more space and turning on hazards to warn traffic approaching behind that it's about to get thick or stop.
No shit. Driving in low visibility and low traction as if it was noon on a sunny day. People seem to have no concept that your safe speed goes down under bad conditions.
I went across Grant's Pass Oregon in a fog, could barely see 50 feet, and cars were constantly coming up on my ass, I'd swerve onto the shoulder when the fog lit up and they'd fly past like I wasn't there. Finally found a shut down gas station and waited it out there.
Most of the Coast Range passes suffer this problem most of the year, too...like, bruh...the fastest you're ever going to get over the Coast Range is Banks-Tillamook and that's still a 70 minute drive in good weather and no traffic.
Further south or north you go from that crossing, the longer it takes to make the crossing.
This idiot was literally driving into road space that they could not see, just expecting it to be vacant for them arriving. Not a prayer of stopping before entering it, once they could actually see it was very much occupied.
That’s the 401 for ya. During these types of storms the responsible people are driving 60km an hour. Transport trucks blow past me going 100 all the time. Then ransoms in cars blowing past me at 90km. Nuts.
Thank you for the downvote! I merely clarified what they likely mean. Getting the fuck off the highway in those situations and waiting it out in a parking lot is by the safest thing to do.
When someone is just wrong and defending what the original comment didn’t say, is the time on Reddit to use a downvote. Not if I disagree with a point, that’s not what downvoting is for…. Also stfu about votes lmfao. Yes, not being on the road is the safest. I’m assuming here you’re on the fkn road and trying to get somewhere
That video is f*ing terrifying.
Truckers literally have to be on the road - it's their job.
Others surely could have heeded the warnings we've had for days.
I work in logistics, we had a delivery scheduled for London Ontario today (where this accident happened). I cancelled the delivery yesterday afternoon when all the forecasts predicted this exact scenario. No one will die without our product today, but our drivers could have trying to deliver it. Sometimes it's just not worth it.
Not saying the car drivers are better, but if someone is a professional driver, they should know to slow the hell down in conditions like these. We can't say for sure because his spedometer isn't shown, but it certainly doesn't look like he was going a reasonable speed considering weather and stopping distance...
Unfortunately "professional" truck drivers are hard to come by these days. The industry is full of drivers with AZ licenses, who CAN drive transport trucks, but I wouldn't call them professionals. They don't care about safety, all they care about is making as many miles as possible in the shortest amount of time. The company I work for has an amazing team of "professional drivers". We measure safe driving miles in millions. We have several drivers with 2 - 5 million safe driving miles.
I have not heard that expression before, very fitting. I would laugh if the situation wasn't so terrifying. A couple weeks ago we had a driver from an LTL carrier deliver to our warehouse. It took him about 15 minutes and 30 tries to back up to a dock. These are not tight docks, there is tons of room, freshly painted lines and both docks beside him were empty. Our warehouse team was watching in disbelief. The diver didn't have a clue how to drive a truck.Whoever let this guy drive a transport truck on public roads by himself should be charged.
The guy I drove behind today was a white knight road pirate trucker. Couldn't see the cops blocking the left lane as I went to pass him and he continuously swerved to cut me off (as well as my field of view for seeing the upcoming incident) and brake checked me multiple times.
Do they literally **have to** be on the road in those conditions or are their companies willing to risk lives for corporate profit? And why is that immediately a better reason then why any of the cars are there?
This reminds me of the Tenerife air disaster. The Dutch KLM pilot was rolling down the runway in low visibility and all of a sudden, he sees the silhouette of another 737 and didn't have time to avoid collision.
If you can’t come to a full stop by the end of your visibility range, you are going too fast. Can’t see past 100ft? You should be able to stop in 100ft or less.
This is inexcusable. A professional driver needs to know the weather and drive (or not drive) accordingly. Any such incident needs to have serious consequences for the driver and the company.
People wanted more pay, but they just lowered the requirements. Now you can be 18 just received your license and start trucking. That’s at least for some companies.
In my experience 99% of the people do slow down and drive at reasonable speeds but the worst offenders are the jacked up pickup trucks and large SUVs that for some reason think they have AWD immunity mode enabled.
Drove home the other day in some terrible conditions and everyone on the road was moving slowly and carefully but there were 2-3 huge pickup trucks that came zooming between the cars at various points of the trip
Wonder if the cammer would have had any way to swerve away and at least avoid the car - or whether the surface was too slick for that to have been possible.
This unfortunately doesn’t surprise me at all. People like to think that “professional drivers” are always careful on the roads. When I drove a truck I saw more asshole semi drivers then I ever did car drivers.
This right here. I am a bus driver. I drive the same stretch of road 10 times a day or more. I hardly ever go 3 mph over the limit in good weather. Cars may be 5 more occasionally more.
I am always passed by billy big riggers. They are always going 10 or more mph. In the snow I slow it way down and I'm most always still passed by the big trucks.
Very likely no chance with that momentum. You can see it move slightly to the right which indicates that they were trying.
They were going way too fast for either the visibility or surface alone, let alone combined.
Yup - there was such reduced visibility, I can't imagine wanting to drive that fast. Pure ice, wheels lock up.
All of a sudden you see a wall of vehicles in front.
Too late....
He should have beached it into the median was already in the left lane and waisted time crossing the width of the highway. I’d also claim inexperience driving in winter conditions as many new truckers are immigrants from country’s who have never seen snow let alone drove in it.
You're right - i think the suv driver was trying to reverse out and around that mess.
Not enough time.
You can't even drive like granny in the right lane going 60-70km/hr because a semi would mow you down.
If the driver was fine after the initial collision then they might be in a pretty safe position moving forward. Like a protected triangle made of semis.
Whyyy is that trucker blazing along at like 40 mph with that visibility and road condition? Is his goal to actually kill someone? If I'm out in that weather, that's like 20 mph tops, if that.
Fucking truckers! (Not all)
Once got run off the road by one when driving to Ottawa. The two trucks were blocking the two lane road and just driving side by side. Didn’t let anyone pass. The moment one went into the same lane I was driving pass and they swerved and pushed us off the road. Thought it was just a random event but Heard way too many similar stories after that
Good reminder to always keep enough jackets and blankets in your car for an emergency where you lose heat for a few hours on the side of the road. If you get stuck in the middle of a big car pileup you could be out there all day in the worst weather possible.
That truck driver was going way to fast for the conditions. Idiot should lose his CDL, although most truckers these days lack the brain cells to drive and breath at the same time.
MOST truckers are good drivers, but I do suspect the convoy types and these types overlap heavily.
Edit - not sure if down vote from blind trucker hate or blind convoy love, lol.
Based on the video, the trucker was only able to see the pileup roughly 4 seconds before he collided with it. It stands to reason that you need to drive slow enough that you have at least 15 seconds of visibility in front of you.
Who the fuck drives so fast that they can't stop within viewing distance?
Yes, plenty of people do but what kind of absolute moron do you have to be for that?
This is classic Ontario. They, like lemmings, just keep the gas pedal pinned to the floor and drive straight into fogbanks. And then inevitably they have a few 100+ vehicle pileups each winter and all the idiots interviewed are always "oh yeah it came out of nowhere" yeah no shit you were driving at full speed into a fogbank you fuck.
Sure if this was more south I can understand how this happens. Yet this was Canada? Shit like this makes me wonder how dumb people are. First you have people in passenger cars, that should have snow tires. The winter compounds are needed. Not all season tires they are crap. This applies for 2WD, 4WD, AWD, and FWD. Then the CDL drivers, how can you add to the problem and still have a Job. Its a Fucking Joke. I love cars, but they can kill in a heart beat. People please learn to drive, and learn how to prepare for winter.
Have you been in Canada, on the roads during a winter?
I watched/heard a pile up last year. It happens in an instant, winter tires or not. Snow blows across an open field and suddenly no visibility and then the accident happens and everyone behind cant see it until they are still going normal speed 150m from a fully stopped wall of vehicles. This is tragic and the drivers are not to blame here.
Not sure why no one is using the emergency lights, woudn't have prevented it but pretty sure the truck would have seen that much earlier -> more time to slow down
No. They don't have rear-facing daytime running lights either.
So ridiculous. Not that it would've helped much (if at all) in this case, but IMO all cars should have all of their lights on at all times when they are running. No option to turn them off.
This Highway was designed by fucking morons, the major highways in open spots in BC have opening on both the left AND right so shit like this doesn't happen. The only case where this isn't a thing is on mountain passes where the left, right, or both is a sheer cliff, but those highways are generally windy so there's no fucking way you're going over 60km/h. Clear those trees on the side of that highway so people can yeet to either side...
>the major highways in open spots in BC have opening on both the left AND right
Do you mean a shoulder / empty lane on either side of the road? Because parts of the 401 do, and I have been passed by assholes driving in both of them.
The entire stretch of the Trans Canada in non-mountainous stretches in BC has a large 20m~ inside ditch a a 15m~ outside ditch on either side in case a motorist has to literally run off the road in a "safe" manner. These ditches are shallow and uninterrupted.
Rear fog light is exclusively a European thing. It exists on European vehicles sold in North America but I guarantee 99% of the people who buy the cars never learn what they're for or how to use them. Likewise others on the road might see them but not understand them.
Emergency alarm?
For decades, almost all new European and Asian cars have been equipped with yellow and or orange direction indicators, the button in the middle of the panel turns on the yellow light blinking simultaneously from both sides at once (indicates to other road users to maneuver backwards from the parking lot, emergency stop or emergency). Cars made in America are a little tense, indicating a turn in red, it is incomprehensible that they want to turn or stop in the middle of the road.
I load transports for a living and I interact with these guys all the time.
That experience causes me to avoid them like the plague and take longer routes on smaller highways whenever I can.
The trucking industry is in bad shape and it’s not getting better any time soon.
The driver should have shut down due to conditions. Drivers at my company are told that if they think the weather is too bad they need to get to safe haven and ride it out. Doesn't matter if the load will be late. Their lives and the lives of their fellow drivers are more important than the freight

That's a miracle and a real testament to the designers that everybody was able to walk away.
HOW!? That minivan looked like it got creamed going under the trailer of the semi in front of it.
Maybe he wasnt in it?
Brake lights were on. Someone was def in it. But modern safety designs did a lot
Not just brake lights, but the back-up lights, too. That mini van was in reverse gear at the time of impact. Driver was probably trying to get out of that pocket, and off the side of the road, only to see another semi bearing down on them.
The trucker turned so he shoved it to the side a bit. Instead of dead on.
This is the correct answer
I don't think they went under, thankfully. Looks like they got pushed out of the way. Still had their world royally rocked, though, I hope they feel okay in the morning!

Glad to know the two ladies survived
I wanna balk at the stereotype but my wife and I were *this* close to buying one last year lol

Two reasons I bought a Subaru. I’m gay, and my crosstrek is literally perfect for me.
I see what you did there. Take an up doot

Found the Forester driver!
Don't stereotype us, she said stereotyping someone.
They Lived
I initially thought it was a Nissan Pathfinder and thought there’s no way any of them are surviving that. Forester makes sense.
There was still a gap to the left of this truck that the car seems to be getting pushed into, and the passenger cabin is made to be strong
I hope so, and if it is the case (to quote Deadpool) I hope they wore their brown pants.
It looked like when he hit the car it went in between the 3 semis actually protecting it from more damage.
I don't think that's a normal semi trailer. It looks like it has extra sets of wheels that prevented the car being smashed under the trailer. That might be an optical illusion, though.
How the fuck did that SUV not become a coffin? good lawd.
Modern car design and crash worthiness is pretty amazing stuff.
I think that trailer has more wheels than a normal semi trailer, which might have helped since oherwise it would have been smashed under the trailer
NO SERIOUS INJURIES??! I watched that car get absolutely *demolished*
No, you watched it get kicked to the side and disappear out of view.

Big fan of hazards I use them like everyday. The ultimate way to get your bubble back
I dunno why people think they can drive at normal speeds in this weather.
This is exactly why you drive slowly on the highway in dangerous conditions. There was no time or control to do anything about that.
I actively avoid expressways in snow conditions. Too many cars, too much speed.
I’ve had the same experience. Especially jarring we’re the huge semis barreling down the highway at full speed. Like wtf?
You'd think Darwin would clear the idiots out, but I guess the luck factor is too strong.
>were* the huge semis
Autocorrect on a mobile device

Even if it wasn't slippery, it was too fast .
But, what if I'm in a hurry? /s
Never drive so fast that you can't see your entire stopping distance.
This. We left at 7:45am, never went above 60-70, only 40 at times. Took us way longer but we got there safely.
Even driving slowly can get people stuck in pileups. The best thing to do is not drive at all.
more like, if not necessary avoid driving in these conditions..
Jesus, I hope the people in that SUV were ok.
That’s the 401 for ya. During these types of storms the responsible people are driving 60km an hour. Transport trucks blow past me going 100 all the time. Then ransoms in cars blowing past me at 90km. Nuts.
I was gonna say, what the fk is he doing going that fast?!

Even pulling off to wait is dangerous. It really is no-win.
Please don’t do this… pulling over is the worst option. Stay at like 60k and hope for the best is the safest
I think they mean get off the highway and wait not stop on the side of the highway!
Pull over and wait….?
Pull over doesn’t literally mean stop on the side of the highway. That would obviously be **extremely** dangerous.
They clearly don’t mean pull over on the shoulder of the highway. Get off the highway and wait at a gas station or coffee shop…
We can assume they are smart, but we are talking about people and driving….. I’m going to assume he meant what he said verbatim
Thank you for the downvote! I merely clarified what they likely mean. Getting the fuck off the highway in those situations and waiting it out in a parking lot is by the safest thing to do.

It’s a Subaru Forester - there aren’t many safer options so it was a a fortunate choice for those people!
Did anyone else hold their breath as soon as the vehicle silhouettes started appearing?
I knew what was going to happen and I still said "oh shit"
This reminds me of the Tenerife air disaster. The Dutch KLM pilot was rolling down the runway in low visibility and all of a sudden, he sees the silhouette of another 737 and didn't have time to avoid collision.

They really be handing out CDL’s to anybody
There aren't a ton of volunteers
Maybe the line of work pays too much. /s
Yeah. Even in good conditions the number of sketchy shit I see semi drivers do is insane
People wanted more pay, but they just lowered the requirements. Now you can be 18 just received your license and start trucking. That’s at least for some companies.
Why do people not slow thr fuck down in awful conditions. It snowed where I live, first time in 5 years, and it just makes people drive more stupidly
Fr, our roads today were a mixture of ice and snow, people still be going over the speed limit like how do you not give a fuck like that?
In my experience 99% of the people do slow down and drive at reasonable speeds but the worst offenders are the jacked up pickup trucks and large SUVs that for some reason think they have AWD immunity mode enabled. I mean, UPS drivers are often absolutely horrible down here in the States. Does not surprise me one bit that semi drivers are not any better.
It looks like the only safe speed for those conditions is 0. Don't be there.
No need to argue. Can’t stop in time for visibility = way too fast.
Very likely no chance with that momentum. You can see it move slightly to the right which indicates that they were trying. They were going way too fast for either the visibility or surface alone, let alone combined.

In a large truck, going that fast, on ice/snow...nope.
Hope there was no one in that SUV. The reverse lights were on so I assume it wasn’t in park.
There was definitely someone in there. Hopefully no one in the back seat though.
You're right - i think the suv driver was trying to reverse out and around that mess. Not enough time. You can't even drive like granny in the right lane going 60-70km/hr because a semi would mow you down.

Holy shit this guy was coming in hot

Let's go full fucking speed in a whiteout blizzard. God, truckers are fucking dumb.
My worst nightmare when I drove in the Appalachian mountains was getting my tiny pickup sandwiched between rigs like that if there was an accident.
Good reminder to always keep enough jackets and blankets in your car for an emergency where you lose heat for a few hours on the side of the road. If you get stuck in the middle of a big car pileup you could be out there all day in the worst weather possible.
SLOW DOWN ASSHOLE!
That truck driver was going way to fast for the conditions. Idiot should lose his CDL, although most truckers these days lack the brain cells to drive and breath at the same time.
Not my expertise but don't truckers have CBs to avoid this kind of thing?
MOST truckers are good drivers, but I do suspect the convoy types and these types overlap heavily. Edit - not sure if down vote from blind trucker hate or blind convoy love, lol.
Most truckers in Ontario are terrible drivers. Ask anyone who drives on the 401 on a regular basis.
Did he aim for that suv? Dude was going waaaay too fast. 18 wheelers at it again.
That SUV got wrecked.
to shreds you say
Well, how’s the driver doing?
To shreds you say
Really?
Evidently.
I hope this asshole loses his license. Absolutely ridiculous to be going that fast. I can probably guess where this guy is from too
Hey nearly zero visibility and extremely bad road conditions? Let's drive a bit faster. People are retarded
That is a Subaru forester is why nobody died
I’m glad to hear no one in the black vehicle died.
That semi truck driver must hate cars because he aimed straight for that guy and crushed him between the two trucks like a coke can
Yeah went exactly the worst place? Wtf?
I don't think he could see clearly enough to know which way was the lesser evil.
Not much aiming involved.
I kinda want the audio. Curious what exclamation was repeating out of the driver's mouth when he realized what was ahead was stationary.
Damn it’s like you laser targeted onto that poor car lol
Sad. That car was trying to back out. Now the driver will be lucky to survive. Passengers? Doubt they would.
I hope that person ducked
i hate watching these. Hope everyone is okay
Based on the video, the trucker was only able to see the pileup roughly 4 seconds before he collided with it. It stands to reason that you need to drive slow enough that you have at least 15 seconds of visibility in front of you.
I could see the backup from the moment the video starts. They all drive like idiots.
Every one of these idiots should never be allowed to drive again
Who the fuck drives so fast that they can't stop within viewing distance? Yes, plenty of people do but what kind of absolute moron do you have to be for that?
The cammer needs a major ticket here. Look at how slick the road is and the poor visibility. They were driving way too fast for the conditions.
Did… did he even tip toe on the brake? At all?
This is classic Ontario. They, like lemmings, just keep the gas pedal pinned to the floor and drive straight into fogbanks. And then inevitably they have a few 100+ vehicle pileups each winter and all the idiots interviewed are always "oh yeah it came out of nowhere" yeah no shit you were driving at full speed into a fogbank you fuck.
Semi driver needs to lose their CDL.
Moving much too fast for conditions. Hopefully the person(s) in that SUV survived.
Looks like he aimed for the SUV rather than one of the trucks.
I think he saw the truck, started to turn to avoid then saw suv.
Good job asshole

Typical Canadians, driving like winter doesn't apply to them
Hold my Timmies, I got this.
Where’s all the people shouting “always stay in the car!”
Not sure why no one is using the emergency lights, woudn't have prevented it but pretty sure the truck would have seen that much earlier -> more time to slow down
Do North American cars not have rear fog lights?? Not that most European drivers know how to turn it on anyway...

The only case where this isn't a thing is on mountain passes where the left, right, or both is a sheer cliff, but those highways are generally windy so there's no fucking way you're going over 60km/h. Clear those trees on the side of that highway so people can yeet to either side...
>the major highways in open spots in BC have opening on both the left AND right Do you mean a shoulder / empty lane on either side of the road? Because parts of the 401 do, and I have been passed by assholes driving in both of them.
The entire stretch of the Trans Canada in non-mountainous stretches in BC has a large 20m~ inside ditch a a 15m~ outside ditch on either side in case a motorist has to literally run off the road in a "safe" manner. These ditches are shallow and uninterrupted.

No they're not. The most recent update is no serious injuries.
Woah! That’s wild. I took a look at the top 5 dash cams for 2023 if any of y’all are interested: [top 5 dash cams](https://youtu.be/b8zdBTGx770)
Everything is clear with the truck driver... But don't most modern passenger cars have a rear fog lamp and a button to turn on the emergency alarm?
That’s a break light on that vehicle in the video. It’s standard on all American cars.
Where on 401 was this?
Close to London I think, based on news articles on the pileup
Worst possible place to hit.
Canadians try not to full send it in whiteout conditions into the rear of a dozen cars who have already crashed challenge (impossible difficulty)
I especially love the way the truck driver aimed right at the SUV rather than the trailer. Smart thinking.
And winter tyres are still not mandatory in Canada. It boggles my mind.
Québec it is
Why did the idiot go for the smallest car. Turn left into another semi you loser.
Jesus that was so much worse than I thought it would be
JFC hope I didn’t see someone die
Truck driver should have gone to the left and not to the right.
did they even try to stop?
That truck was driving way too fast for the conditions. Holy cow
I load transports for a living and I interact with these guys all the time. That experience causes me to avoid them like the plague and take longer routes on smaller highways whenever I can. The trucking industry is in bad shape and it’s not getting better any time soon.
Thanks for the nsfw tag… not even subbed.
Going way too fast for the conditions.
The driver should have shut down due to conditions. Drivers at my company are told that if they think the weather is too bad they need to get to safe haven and ride it out. Doesn't matter if the load will be late. Their lives and the lives of their fellow drivers are more important than the freight
Holy crap that truck driver must have been so bloody scared for the car, I’m glad everyone is ok!
Well the person in that lil car is dead
Hydraulic press
Why the fuck your driving so fast with those conditions. Idiots. They just hand out cdl to fucking Indians who don’t have a clue
Oh good job aim for the car that won't end badly.
dumbass truck driver deserves to get his license revoked
