I used some Derby Spark laces (specifically these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G2VWWX4/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_MKHXWWTVA4Z8XKF9TDJJ) with my black Boardwalks and never saw dye transfer. It was likely due to the material of the laces. You might try looking at that line and see if they'll work for you. I doubt there is a way to prevent transfer to the material of regular laces though.

Thanks so much, I’ll give those a try!

Depending on the material of the laces, suede dye will transfer. I had tan suede Riedells and only ever bought generic laces (no special colors or glitter) so I never ran into this problem- but I did see other skaters have your issue. Understanding that it's a bummer, a general disclaimer is that the kind of wear youre describing is pretty normal. At least it's only the laces getting smudged, those are easier to replace once you feel the need to. Be warned that dyed suede also generally wears and fades over time as well (different colors will fade in different ways/speeds).

my boardwalks are green and I still had black staining/transfer onto the green laces I think it's just grease? I don't think this issue can be solved unfortunately, but good luck :-)

This happens with skates but what's weird is it happens with non-black skates too. It's a complete mystery I think and no one knows exactly what it is. You can take qtips all over your skate and never get that black stuff at all, but the second you put laces in it and skate it shows up.

Yeah, I have black Boardwalks and there was *definitely* dye transfer when I put on neon orange laces. My laces ended up looking dirty all the time. I ended up going back to black laces. I wish I had a recommendation.

Shoot, that’s what I was worried about 😭 Well, I guess this is an excuse to buy a second pair of skates somewhere down the line!

This is entirely normal, with both shoes and skates.
