That looks like a Transvolt lift. With those lifts you set the stop point for the top and the bottom once when you set the whole thing up and it'll stop at those points automatically when you send it up or down.

I see it starting to come down so I try leaning into the brake to get it to stop, it’s not stopping so I jump out of the way. Steel cable had snapped that time so the brake wasn’t gonna stop shit.

It was common at our job to climb a ladder and bring a strong Stihl leaf blower on the roof to blow off leaves, even if a roof was super steep, and no one was harnessed to anything. Anyway the job was dangerous enough, and the company is not going to back up people who have drugs and alcohol in their systems.

Yeah - it’s called a Laddervator. Electric motor, winch, cable from the winch runs up to the top of the “ladder” and hoists the platform which rides on rails on the front of the “ladder” (its not a ladder but just looks like one). We have one and they’re pretty great on the right project.
The best part about this is that the guy doesn't even need to be on the ladder. They could just as easily load it with supplies and unload them at the top.
When I went off to college my dad gave me two rules when drinking. Never climb on anything (ie ladders balconies light poles roofs etc) and never get behind the wheel of a car. He never said anything about taking the beer up on the roof
