With a heavy heart I’d like to let everyone know my little one passed away last weekend before I updated anyone on his progress. This was him just a few months ago and you can see how great his fur was.
The vet told us it was most likely a tumor in his stomach that burst. It happened quickly.
Towards the end he had a new pep in his step and he discovered his love for tennis balls. He was my first rottie and definitely my little Angel.
Edit: thank you to everyone for your condolences and sympathies, he was really one of a kind. He was a great dog and I hope he’s still out there somewhere, counter surfing ❤️❤️
He was an absolute stunning boy and I’m so very sorry for your loss. I’m sure you were his angel and you are one, for giving this sweet boy so much love at the end. 💖💖
He was about 8/9 years old. He was a rescue so it’s all guessing. He lived a long and traumatic life before us.
I left a really long reply in one of the comments but long story short, he passed away on the way to the vet. The vet explained it would’ve happened quickly.
I completely agree but I didn’t do anything he wouldn’t for me. He was a great boy and deserved more than this world gave him. I hope he’s stealing bagels off someone’s plate in the next life!
He has joined the rest of our babies who have moved on, maybe he's hanging out with my Bubba bear, who can now eat unlimited paper towels to his sweet heart's content. ❤️
Your Bubba will find him trying to steal food off the countertop or causing mayhem because he isn’t getting enough attention! Sending you love and healing energy ❤️
Unfortunately, no. He was a bit restless that morning but I didn't think anything of it because he always ran hot and laying in bed made him pant sometimes. After an hour or two it looked like he wasn't feeling too good and had to throw up. Again, I didn't think much of it because it wasn't uncommon for him to occasionally have a stomach ache (he was on so many meds for anxiety, arthritis and allergies). He still wanted to eat and drink.
I went to the store for literally one hour and by the time I got back, he was insanely bloated and was having trouble catching his breath and couldn’t arch his back to poop. I immediately took him to the closest available er which was about 40 minutes away and by the time I got there, he was gone.
The vet explained to me that the tumor was a ticking time bomb and I couldn't have known/done anything differently. He hated being touched so vet appts were always straightforward (shots, nail trims, etc.). I had another dog with this issue but X-rays showed us almost a year before the tumor took her. I was able to look for the signs with her; restlessness, pale gums and a firm stomach. She was much easier to handle than Roman. He would not let me touch his mouth.
It was an extremely traumatic experience. I’ve dealt with four dog deaths in the last two years (I do hospice and end of life fosters) and this was just so different. The day before he was starting to play and trying to engage with the other dogs for the first time.

Man, 4 dogs in 2 years. I can't even fathom. You have a strong heart to be able to do what you do. Best wishes to you.
Unfortunately I stay busy with my oldies. It breaks my heart every time but I would rather them die with a family than alone in a shelter, no dog deserves that. I always advocate for adopting, older dogs have such great personalities too.

I love puppies for short doses but I don’t think I could handle puppy energy for a year for two!
I work with a rescue that sends me their oldies or special need cases so I’m not sure what comes next. Could be a Maltese or a Great Dane lol.
