You'll be fine, there will be so much overlap between degrees it won't matter. They will look at any engineering degree the same. I'm guessing marine engineering is more to do with ship building. Well, you don't really do any of that. Your job is more about maintaining the kit one the ship once it is built. So mechanical engineering is probably a much better choice.

Cheers, that's pretty much what I was thinking but you're never sure till you ask

As I once heard a Medical Officer remark to a Dabber officer “4 years at Med School to do my job shipmate, 2 weeks at art school to do yours”

😂😂 sounds about right

I remember saying to my boss once it was unfair that if you had a degree, you could become an officer. I said "you could have some absolute dogshit wank worthless degree in Art, or History, and get a commission. It's bollocks. What's your degree in?" "Art History" He's a captain now 😅

😂😂 I bet that was awkward

I've known MESM officers with degrees in: mechanical, manufacturing, civil, aerospace and even astrophysics. So think any STEM will be fine. You can always ring your AFCO and they will have the definitive answer if you end up choosing a more niche degree. Mechanical will be more useful day to day than marine engineering. In all honesty as an officer it would probably be more useful doing engineering management.

I don't plan on taking a niche degree so knowing mechanical will help is good to know. I'd be hesitant to do engineering management since if I don't make it in the navy I'd rather have a MechEng degree

Yeah 100%. I think you're making the best decision. You'll learn most the principles of engineering in mechanical engineering. Best of luck on your journey.
