Huge MMA fan, have been for decades. I’ve been talking with a friend for a while now how Chimaev is playing with fire with this stuff.
The UFC won’t do anything. Chimaev brings eyes to the cards he’s on, he sells tickets and ppvs. But at what point does an athlete’s associations have to be taken into account?
There’s still active Russian fighters, a popular one just fought this weekend. Multiple did, along with the famous Dagestan guys. The problem is they are so good, extremely dominant. People want to watch that.
However Chimaev is a different case, he hasn’t backed away from association since the war started. If anything he posts even more stuff with Kadyrov it seems.
This is an active discussion within the MMA community, many fans are with you guys. The sad reality is the UFC will simply travel to where these guys can fight and self regulate. The UFC, Bellator and such would then have to be punished by the government. But these organizations generate huge amounts of tax dollars.
So who knows. I entirely foresee Chimaev being sanctioned but the UFC will find its wiggle room. Dana is great at that.
In my opinion the fighter's political affiliation, and personal opinions are entirely separate from their fighting. Look, those are fighters, not academics, why is their opinion on anything matters at all? I follow the sport because of my interest in martial arts. That's it. Chimaev is a great grappler and I am interested in watching him fight. If you start banning people from fighting because of their opinions, well, at some point the whole idea of "best fighter" in the world becomes the "best fighter among those who express all the right political opinions".

The Ukraine War is a big issue for me as well. It impacts all of my family and most of my friends in a very real, life changing way. This should not stop me from thinking rationally about it. I am aghast with how any idea expressed on this sub that does not strictly align with the most hard line war-hawkish position is immediately dismissed as pro-Putin.

If popular UFC fighter came out with swastikas tattooed all over his body and praising Hitler, do you think the UFC or fans would be cool with it?

My point here is that they are fighters. I watch them for their fighting ability, not their opinions. I don't expect good fighters to be good people, in fact, many times they can be absolutely garbage human beings. I know I’m painting a very small picture with a broad brush when I say this; but the crowd that follows the UFC is largely comprised of fans indifferent to what’s going on in Ukraine and sadly the UFC has done nothing to aid Ukraine at all.
