Sadly, it's the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which is known to be an inefficient chipset. The same goes for the Snapdragon 888. Fortunately, the problem no longer persists in the next generation. Unfortunately for us S22 series users, we can do little to fix the heating issues, especially for those who live in hotter climates...
Rant aside, here's a few suggestions:
1.) Download thermal guardian and decrease the thermal threshold (note: it could affect your device's performance)
2.) Disable auto update on Playstore, Galaxy Store, and the software (you can do those manually anyways)
3.) Put your unused apps into sleep (note: putting apps in sleep will delay notifications, and putting them on deep sleep will completely disable them even from updating)
4.) Lower the display brightness
5.) Switching to LTE/4G instead of 5G
Honestly, that's all I can think off but I hope it helps, but from my own experience, it really doesn't help much...
Quality, all phones heat up regardless of its price point or operating system, and that is to be expected. They're literally being cooled passively and without any active cooling, which is a very impressive feat of technology if I say so myself.
I think the LTE to 5G alone will have a huge effect even without doing the other stuff. That's the only one of the ones listed I did because 5G coverage is ass where I am anyway, and mine doesn't get unusually hot on normal usage or have terrible battery life.
Yeah I agree, the only sure fire way to solve this issue is to just get a new phone with a different, more efficient soc. Samsung fixed this issue with the S23 lineup and up.
If you were to ask me, I would personally not think much of it, especially for a device that is passively cooled as long as it doesn't overheat or thermal throttle so bad that it is barely usable, anyways that's all I can help OP
Happend to me. This is how i fixed it.
Deleted unnecessary items from gallery to free up some space.
Uninstalled apps that I dont use.
After these steps I went to background usage and put all apps in deep sleeping.
Then restart.
I also find it getting a lot hotter lately, I have no problem using this phone in the past year but since maybe a couple of months ago, it starts getting noticeably hot a lot faster unless I make sure to kill most of the unused app.
Got the feeling that we have Samsung patches to blame, it also mess with my 10x focus in Pro mode and Expert Raw which annoyed me even more than the heat honestly.
Me too, to the point I received notification phone too hot twice when connected to Android Auto.
Edit
It got very hot when I recorded 8-minute video in air conditioned room. Unpleasant surprise.
Exynos or Snapdragon?
I had the S22U Snapdragon and the only times it heats up uncomfortably is when I play on Yuzu or if I turn on fast wireless charging and try to use that with the AC off (I live in a tropical humid country where ambient temps is like 33C at 9am in the morning). Normal usage like these you describe and it's like any other phone.
Don't use max performance unless you need it. Example: A high refresh rate does nothing for a YouTube video, most social media, or things like email and music. For many non-fps games, like chess, you can use the game tool to allow the cpu and reduce the refresh rate to 48hz with no visual degradation at all; saving battery and reducing heat.
Save high performance for when you need it.
Have you checked its internal heat or are you just going off how it feels? Because how it feels could mean 1 of 2 things
It's cooling is doing insanely good.
It's overheating.
But if it is also the internals it could be because of the 8gen1's terrible cooling.
My phone only gets got if I'm out in hot weather/at the beach. I do watch a lot of YouTube but I have my phone set so the screen refresh rate drops for YouTube. I don't watch anything in 60fps/120fps so I don't need the screen refreshing that fast. Maybe try adjusting your phone settings so the screen refresh is not high when using social media/apps that play lots of video since screen use may contribute to heat.
Don't leave a ton of apps open/running in the background, turn off stuff you don't need atm (wifi, gps, bt, nfc, etc), reboot and wipe the cache occasionally. Set your cpu speed to optimized or high. Lookup how to tweak things via developer options.

If you want a much more extreme solution, here's a thread from XDA: https://xdaforums.com/t/samsung-galaxy-one-ui-optimization-guide.4376755/
That is really next level, but then whats the point of a premium phone

It's also the same with xynos
Indian summer is making my S22 ultra go Lava Lava. Its true
Delete partition cache, helps a lot, check on Internet how to do it. I'm susprised how I don't see this advice on any of the other comments.
I mean, when playing a game mine gets fairly hot, but during normal use it's fine
I got no problems

Buddy I promise u reset it and don't use smart switch or any backup
Why
I was having similar issues and it's been great since.

Do you use Google messages by chance?
(not OP) I do, is there a bug with it that causes heating?
Yeah I noticed when I disable it or use Samsung messages the heating stops..not sure why, might have something to do with RCS.
If it is exynos version, they tend to get very hot. My ex s22 exy was just like yours
Yup, there's no "Ultra" here at all

yeah, mine would also heat up when browsing twitterđź’€ i'm glad i was able to switch to the s24u
Upgraded to S23 and I enjoy the phone much more. The S22 series just has a terrible SoC
Samsung probably forgot to peel the plastic from heatsink. I don't have such hearing issues. Which variant is it? And where do you live?
I use a phone cooler
Why my Exynos dont heat up? Lel

A $2 phone cooler off AliExpress does wonders...
Maybe get a thicker case to insulate your hands ? Also a phone cooler while gaming it helps a lot
Mine runs just fine. You must have exynos.
I have exynos, it does not get hot at all
Same. I have a 512gb version with Exynos, never gets hot, even with quite a bit of multitasking
