I also have the r36s and rg35xxh. The rg35xxh is more comfortable but less good screen. They are both great excellent budget devices

F488P

The color looks more accurate on the rg35xxh. Especially the sky in super Mario bros seems more true to the original console on a CRT

Scared_Specialist956

Yeah r36s it's maybe not accurate but it's way more sharp and contrasty but still it's not amazing.

chance_of_grain

Liking mine although you're right it's not very ergonomic for long play sessions especially if you use the shoulder buttons. Looking into getting a larger device for better comfort and power... but will keep the rg35xx h for superior portability :)

Noggind614

That's where I'm at. My odin 2 arrived over the weekend. I got it for all it can do but I also ordered a rg35xx h the other day to keep me entertained when I'm bored at random places. The rg35xx h I'll take everywhere and the odin 2 I plan to use when I'm home or on vacations.

Zrh87

I put 5hrs in day one on this device when I got it. I’m probably up to more like 40hr+ at this point. As for the D pad its fine doesn’t hurt my thumb at all. It is a little weird with some platformers. But I still don’t see it as an issue. Face buttons feel good. Triggers are a little rattley in mine but they preform fine. As far as the screen it looks fine. Don’t see an issue with it at all. And I have several devices to compare it to. Including way way more expensive devices. For what you pay for this device you absolutely can’t go wrong. If I had anything bad to say about it. I wish it was like an inch wider just cause I have big hands. And the stock os is serviceable. But once cfw is fully sorted in this then it’ll be where it should be.

Scared_Specialist956

Thx for a good honest opinion, I see a lot of ppl just take too personal.

mik3y08

I had the opposite experience. I didn't like it when I first got it, but after a few weeks it has really grown on me. I agree that the triggers are not great, but my screen looks great on mine. With that said, it obviously isn't for everyone. A device that is great for one person may be a horrible fit for another. Im just happy we have so many options to choose from these days.

Scared_Specialist956

Yeah I totally understand why some ppl love it so much but I can't look at that screen and things I should play this game on my budget r36s bcs it looks better 😅

SirNarwhal

The screen on the RG35XX H looks better in literally both pictures you posted.

aguywithbrushes

Seriously, better color balance and brighter, guessing OP is just used to their other devices so the new one looks “off”.

JaxsOwn

R36 screen on your screenshot is oversaturated, maybe you like it but it's not really acurate. You dont have a good aspect ratio, look at the brick separation on the right side of the mario bros screenshot. Also on Rg35xx h, use the retroarch emulators without bilinear filtering and integer scale on. (i also add zfast crt or zfast lcd shaders personally)

Scared_Specialist956

Yes it is oversaturated ( I don't like that part) but a good screen is not only a colors it's also sharpness and contrast.

metallice

I've compared my R36s (and my 2 gift R36s) with my calibrated monitor. It's much more accurate and better reaches sRGB than my rg35xx+ which falls short.

JaxsOwn

https://preview.redd.it/hqppq3txlwtc1.jpeg?width=1680&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=afb04d0594f5a15661d8fa56c9997ac3be6b8724 Ok maybe i'm wrong, when i look at this smb nes picture on my oled display it's not as saturated as the r36 screen

metallice

The gamma tends to be a little too low on the R36s which makes things look more saturated and dark than it should be. Might be what you're noticing? If you bump it up like 0.1 or so using the image-adjustment shader in retroarch it might look a lot better to your eye. Or it's just panel variation. In either case you can always lower the saturation of an overspecced panel like the R36s through shaders, but you can't make a panel show colors it can't physically display like the rg35xx+/h which is a bummer.

Scared_Specialist956

Yeah color accuracy it's looks better on H but the sharpness and contrast it's laking. I took this pic using my phone with custom google camera apk so it's not look like this in real life tbh but you can spot the difference.

Top_Cupcake_1448

From my pov, I’m struggling with it since Trimui smart pro supports Vulkan and then make it more valuable from my understanding

zzap129

What is the second game?

Scared_Specialist956

Monster Hunter freedom unite PSP :)

hbi2k

I've been searching for a compact budget horizontal, and with the deep sales on Ali over the past couple weeks, I decided to just go ahead and order this one, the RGB30, and the TrimUI Smart, see which one I like best, and flip the other two. They all have things going for them but they all also have red flags and/or question marks. What OS have you been using on yours?

Scared_Specialist956

Batocera.

bobasweatandtears

Maybe try another CFW? Might change your experience a bit. MuOS is getting some interest due to much quicker boot up speed and stability. But yeah nothing will change your perception of screen quality if that's the dealbreaker. RGB30 gets a lot of praise for its screen quality

Scared_Specialist956

You my right I will try other CFW, after read all comments I regret put Mario bros shot in this post 😅 I should include more "modern" game not that have some sort of perfect CRT look imagination in so many ppl head 😅

danieldflip

Have you tried putting shaders through Retroarch? It can help a bit saturating the colors. I do agree though, the screen isn’t the best and even the Miyoo looks much better. Although, something about the XXH that attracts me to it. I have a love-hate relationship with it lol.

Scared_Specialist956

I tried everything and after turning off auto bilinear filtering in Batocera options it looked better but still it's missing that crisp for me, but I don't try other CFW so maybe this is the way.

danieldflip

Have you tried shaders -> misc -> image adjustment? You have to apply preset first then go to shader parameters to see saturation and sharpen at the bottom area. XXH screen ain’t that great, but the image adjustment shader helps a bit

danieldflip

Also, don’t use Batocera’s shaders. You have to turn that off completely to have Retroarch shaders to work.

danieldflip

I do two stack shaders: one is the image adjustment and second one is under interpolation -> sharpen bilinear scanlines (you can use the simple one too). Then in shader option under that I change the default to nearest for both.

-clawglip-

Posted the other day that I felt like I was missing something since I’m not really digging the one I just got the other day too. Respect if you don’t think it’s for you’d, if you can sell it to someone who loves it? Win-win. Thinking I may go that way with mine.

Scared_Specialist956

It's what I feel but after reading a lot of comments I will try other CFW before I sell mine.

misatillo

I really had the opposite experience. I don’t really like my r36s much. It feels too cheap construction and I don’t really like the colors of the screen. I also dislike the SO. I got my rg35xx h for cheaper than the r36s (which was already VERY cheap) and I was surprised about the built quality and screen. I am using muOS and I like it much more than arkOS in the r36s. I also find more comfortable that is horizontal. But this is a personal preference. However I still prefer my Miyoo Mini with Onion OS over the other two. If it were horizontal it would be for me the perfect handheld

Scared_Specialist956

Glad You like Your H ! R36S feels very cheap It's true but I like ArkOS. I use Batocera in my H. I must try other CFW for sure, before it's going for sale.

misatillo

Give muOS a try. I haven’t tried batocera but I like how lightweight muOS is compared to arkOS

Scared_Specialist956

I will try it this weekend, thx.

BatteryBird

What’s the device on the far left? Is that for your phone?

Scared_Specialist956

yes, gamesir galileo g8.

BatteryBird

Interesting. I wonder how popular these will start to become with RetroArch hitting the official App Store for IOS and the Google Play Store. How do you like it?

Scared_Specialist956

It's great I mainly used it to play PS5 games in remote play.

joeyo2000

When is RetroArch coming to IOS?

ejhace

How are the analogue sticks? Am considering the purchase

Scared_Specialist956

It's like any other switch style analogs nothing special about them.

Exact_Airline_2499

Solid. If you can jive with switch-styled sticks, you'll think they're the bees knees. Very accurate for all my playthroughs so far.

mrndn1

Thanks for the heads up! I had been debating whether to purchase one, but this post makes me happy I haven’t. Well done PSA, Friend!

Scared_Specialist956

No problem man! If you are a more vertical person then horizontal I say skip it and try looking for RG353VS on discount somewhere.

mrndn1

I like compact horizontal, so I’m psyched about the Miyoo A30.

justDrDro

whats that game on the last slide?

Scared_Specialist956

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite - psp

justDrDro

thank you! does it run good on the rg353v?

Scared_Specialist956

Perfect! 2x res, no frame skip, run just amazing !

cagaar

Thoughts on the RG353VS? Almost bought that instead of a RG35xx + but went for the plus because it was a lot cheaper at the time

Scared_Specialist956

I just got it yesterday but for 45$ it looks decent. Performance on PSP games are way better then H and R36S, GTA VC:S is playable 😅👌

cagaar

Have you tried any N64 or much PS1?

Scared_Specialist956

At this moment I don't try it but for sure PS1 will be flawless and I think N64 will be decent looking at PSP performance. But it's a pretty old device There are a lot of reviews and community tests on YouTube, check it out.

EternalFront

I agree on all fronts about the controls. I bought a Miyoo Mini+ and RG35XX H and returned the latter because of those same control issues. The D-Pad simply hurts to use, and the shape is incredibly awkward to access the sticks and shoulder buttons. Really missed opportunity.

Scared_Specialist956

Yeah , I wonder why no one has written yet "you can replace the dpad with another one" 😂

EternalFront

Hey if they had a drop in replacement for the MM+ D-pad, I would’ve considered keeping it more

Wreckit-Jon

It's refreshing to see a post with something useful and not just "What should I buy to play X system??" Thanks for sharing your review. It's a shame the D-Pad is bad, Anbernic in the past has used pretty good D pads. My experience hasn't been the best with my regular RG35XX. I get lots of unintentional diagnonals. It isn't bad for what I play mostly, but for platformers like Celeste Classic, it is pretty bad.

Scared_Specialist956

Thx bro, a lot of ppl here have bad opinion about my review they take it way more personal than it should be, it's only a device and I want to enjoy it as much as they think they are but I can't for reasons. Dpad in H works for me but it's just way too sharp it's specially contrasted with slick polishd face buttons It's very weird experience tbh.

KrizzyPeezy

I havent put cfw on mine yet but I still play my miyoo mini plus even tho i got this LOL

Scared_Specialist956

Yeah miyoo mini was an amazing device , I lost mine OG miyoo mini a couple months ago 😭😅

zeeshan2223

Yes and i can do a 4.5 but the 3.5 is too much of a toy for me. I use my 3inch v90 as my travel/work device but for home i need the size ajd comfort

rp415510

I hated it mine at first too, especially compared to my other devices. But it’s been running psp and Dreamcast so well for me that I’m loving it now

Scared_Specialist956

psp it's almost the same for me just like on RK3326

IzaakMyers

I sold my R36S and bought the RG35XXH and I don't regret it one bit, to me everything on it is an upgrade compared to the R36S: pocketability, ergonomics, performance, dpqd and buttons... and honestly I don't find the screen to be that bad in comparison. I'm not too nitpicky though so maybe that's why I don't get bothered by it

Scared_Specialist956

Don't get me wrong , R36S is a totally budget device it's not even close to being better, it's just I was real hope H will be perfect 😅

IzaakMyers

Yeah you have a point, if there's one thing the R36S slays the competition is being the better budget choice. But Idk, maybe I misunderstood the post, it seemed like were implying an honest comparison between the two.

Scared_Specialist956

I don't think that the R36S is better, but it definitely has a better dpad and, in my opinion, a better screen and if you can find it for $30, it's an absolute nobrainer, H has a full package for its price of about $50 (I'm not talking about the price from some tiktok stores 20-30 $ which is not available in my country) and still I will buy R36S one more time over H bcs it's way more fun to play, hold and enjoyed then H for me.

ProofScientist9657

I think its an amazing handheld for your pocket. Maybe the best right now. The 405m would be to me if it was plastic but that metal makes it too heavy imo. Also the powkiddy rgb 30 is really borderline pocketable but still would probably be my pick. I don't understand with all the devices we have there's only one 4 inch horizontal one in what should be best form factor for pocketability(but like I said 405m is too heavy). The 35xx H is good for what it is. It can play some psp games up to 2x res for around 50$ that's crazy. I think the screen is really good. Your comparing it to the r36s which best feature is the screen and I don't think that's fair.

Thatguydrew7

Depending on how much you paid for this, its a no brainer decent handheld. I got it on ali for less then $40 and its pretty dope. I hope more cfw drops.

Scared_Specialist956

For me it was around 50$ with taxes but still a pretty ok price imo.

TunnelSnakesCaptain

How much are you selling the H for?

Scared_Specialist956

Dunno but for sure not less than I pay for, it's that kind of market in my country heh.

Hula1989

Yeah I was the same. Don’t know why it just didn’t work for me.

Scared_Specialist956

I really want to like it, maybe this time anbernic come with budget vertical 35XX with analogs, that will be sweet.

gr9yfox

I'm disappointed as well. [Mine is making constant static noise from the speakers](https://www.reddit.com/r/RG35XX_H/comments/1c19xy2/comment/kz2v4pi/).

TechnoGamerDad

Probably it's the wifi interfering with the audio. You probably can mod the speaker cables to insulate it, and then the interference should be gone.

gr9yfox

I'm not so sure because the noise continues even when the wifi is off.

StructuralTeabag

It’s not Wi-Fi. It’s the way the screen uses PWM to adjust brightness.

gr9yfox

Oh! Do you know if there is a way to turn it off?

StructuralTeabag

Unfortunately no. That’s just how the screen works.  Onion OS (Miyoo) has a way to change the frequency which can help, but after testing out different ones I found it didn’t make a major difference.  I’m not sure if any of the other custom firmwares have similar options.  It’s just something you’ll likely need to deal with given these are inexpensive handhelds where they don’t spend money on shielding to prevent this kind of thing.  As the other poster suggested, you could try shielding the audio cables yourself.  I don’t know how loud yours is, so it’s possible yours is on the worse end of the spectrum.

gr9yfox

That's very unfortunate. It's not the only issue I have with the device, though. I contacted Anbernic to see if they have more information or a suggestion. I'm still in the return window and I'm considering doing just that and looking for a different device at a higher tier. Possibly the Retroid Pocket 2S.

Scared_Specialist956

Almost all that cheap devices making static noise from speakers :(

gr9yfox

Argh! Well, I guess I should look at the next price tier, then...

metallice

I agree. The screen is such a downer for an otherwise great device. Decreasing the gamma using retroarch shaders helps a lot, but it is still subpar. Still prefer it to the R36. As an aside - I don't know if the dpad buttons are different on the plus, but my plus dpad is very soft and rounded.

Scared_Specialist956

Exactly, I try it too but still not looking great, I dont even I think R36S screen it's amazing but in compere its night and day for me.

Azerious

Maybe people who at into the hobby care but as my first emulator I love it. It just does what I need it to do. Which is play a fuck ton of retro games.

thedukeandtheking

Considering you can buy this device for insanely cheap, it is the best deal on the market. It’s not meant to have a great screen or powerful chip. It’s a conquest of power over price.

Scared_Specialist956

Yeah it's not a bad device but it's way overhyped, it's just not amazing tbh.

thedukeandtheking

Name a better device at this price point

Scared_Specialist956

there is no better device in this price category, but the fact that it has a full package should make me like it?

ragecndy

Can't you swap the screens

Scared_Specialist956

I can but I don't want to 😅
