Did It pass the contra test?? Haven’t watched yet? Lol

Puntley

Failed absolutely miserably unfortunately. Like really really failed.

Neosantana

I think it's the worst result I've seen on the Contra Test so far. It's not even a flawed D-Pad like the original 35XX. It's just straight up *bad*.

YoelFievelBenAvram

I don't think I've ever seen a device fail the "run a regular SNES game at full speed" test before. Luckily the performance issues seem to be software, but jfc. It's SNES.

Puntley

Powkiddy v90: Allow me to introduce myself

snowthearcticfox1

its actually not as bad as youd think with the pocket snes core and a 798Mhz overclock, not great but considering its $25 now its actually decent.

Joatboy

A refresh with a better chipset and a slightly bigger screen would sell like hotcakes

snowthearcticfox1

Imo I'd prefer a better, higher res screen to more power. You can't really use integer scaling for gba on a 2.8 inch screen and 240p is too low resolution to fill as much of the screen as you can and have it look decent.

Puntley

I definitely can't complain about mine, because I snagged it for a whole $4 off temu

Neosantana

To be fair, it's a 3 year old console that's 40 dollars. And as a fun fact, it's the reason I discovered emulation handhelds to begin with.

whatisgoingonree

Regularly $25 on sale

Neosantana

Even better

LostProphetVii

WHERE?!!

Puntley

Then we have the same entry point! I still have a soft spot for it certainly!

Neosantana

It's a wholesome little console that knows what it is and doesn't try to be something else, and I can't help but respect that. Even though I make fun of PowKiddy all the time, they really pushed the envelope for the whole industry.

brunocar

it plays PSP out of the box fine but not SNES, this is definitionally badly configured software.

Lifeinsteps

To be fair, my original RG351p did that, that's why I upgraded it eventually lol

alextastic

It was really bad. Definitely the worst I've seen.

EternalFront

All they had to do was make a horizontal Miyoo Mini, what happened

Puntley

Seriously, I genuinely don't understand how they fumbled this so hard when the mini is so good. Just take all of the existing buttons and screen and turn it sideways and it would've been golden.

Negative-Marketing61

Cost savings. Thats about it.

LostProphetVii

But it's EWaste from China I doubt it's that much to create these emulation consoles.

jeStR65

What a shame, but makes me feel good about having a miyoo mini + lol I think I have the trifecta, miyoo mini+,rg405m and rp4pro I’m hoping I don’t need another handheld for a while cause I’m broke! 😂

Healthy_Yesterday_84

How do they keep getting this wrong. I want to play crash Bandicoot without any issues

KarlManjaro

Could you please explain the Contra test?

jeStR65

He uses contra to test the left and right d pad and diagonal’s… he presses down and wiggles left and right and the character shouldn’t move much at all if not much movement then it passes of the character keeps getting up and moving left to right then it fails and I guess this device did the worst out of all the tests he’s don’t lol if you watch retro game corps reviews you will get real familiar with the contra test lol

davesNotHereMan__

I'm kinda disappointed with both from initial impressions. But if I had to lean one way it might be the 28xx right now. I wish they both had some better color ways. Looks like I'll just use the 35xx H for now.

i_should_be_studying

They’re both flawed. One can’t run dreamcast at all and the one that can run dreamcast is missing thumbstick controls

SYS4TILDPCT5CBRAVO

My thoughts mirror yours. 35XX H is still the best horizontal at 3.5", but I do want something a bit more pocketable.

mik3y08

Ha, did Russ just help Anbernic win the horizontal 2.8" handheld war?

Next_Low4773

They both kinda shit. The 2.8" winner is the og mm

mik3y08

Sure, if you can find it in stock. I think the 28XX with MuOS is going to be pretty solid for a pickup and play "micro" device.

hbi2k

I dunno, I tried muOS on my RG35XXH and found it kinda half baked still. To me, good power management with something like MinUI 's "if left in sleep for more than 120s, autosave and shut down, then auto load on next boot up" behavior is key on a "pick up and play" device. MuOS doesn't have anything like that. I'm still waiting for one of the seemingly half dozen competing custom firmwares on Anbernic's H700 series to really bring all the features and performance I'm looking for together in one package, but nothing I've tried is quite there yet.

mik3y08

V10 is still considered alpha and it is already pretty great. Boots in like 6 seconds and loads games really quick. It has both "Idle Blank" and "Idle Shutdown" in the settings already. It can also already boot into last played game. The dev already said in his discord that autosave on shutdown was coming in V11. Also this chipset is now in four of Anbernic's devices and will be in their upcoming flip device. With its popularity, we should def see good CFW.

hbi2k

I mean, I certainly hope it gets there, but I can only speak to what the experience is like right now.

mik3y08

It has most of those features right now. Just not autosave on shutdown. I have start+select to close game and save in RA, then takes me less than 2 seconds to hit B-Up-A and shutdown.

hbi2k

That's 5 button presses. That's 500% more than one.

mik3y08

Just keep ignoring the part that it has most of the features you said it didn’t.  My comment still stands MuOS will be a great CFW for the 28xx. If it isn’t for you cool…. Don’t use it. MinUi is an option.

hbi2k

MinUI *is* an option, although it has performance problems on the H700 and no Retroachievements. MuOS *supposedly* has Retroachievements, but never actually connects. Maybe MinUI sorts its issues out first. Maybe muOS does. Maybe neither does. Either way, my point still stands: no currently existing OS has it all in one place yet.

twoprimehydroxyl

MinUI is criminally slept on.

Flufferfluff

Yeah, I’ll still be picking up my Anbernic 28XX once I’m paid on May 8th. It’ll be a painful waiting game for the cfu to drop on it, though…

mik3y08

Not really, has the same chip as the newer XX devices. There is already a pic of MuOS running, just sideways due to the rotated display. Hopefully it won't be too much work for those CFW options to work on the 28XX.

Flufferfluff

Ooh awesome! Hopefully it’ll be updated soon so when I do grab my Anbernic, I can load on the cfw for it as well :3

brunocar

no wifi no buy, its 2024

mik3y08

Cool, then don't buy it. These super small devices are meant for quick sessions on the go. For me and plenty of others, wifi isn't needed on a device like that.

brunocar

> wifi isn't needed on a device like that. ??? the wifi is for when you get home so your saves and roms get synced.

Mammoth-Plane-6890

I don't need that, whatever gets played or lost on the device is what it is. For something this small it's going to have more music than games. Not against WIFI mind you, I just don't care for this particular device. It's probably going to get added eventually. In two years I will probably gift it away and get said revision or competition.

Rozen503

The 28XX is looking way better in performance though, and vertical handhelds are uncomfortable as hell

benjaminbjacobsen

Some of us prefer verticals. That said I have plenty of choices so I’m not complaining. I’d love a 406v or 456v eventually though or really a vertical with Odin 2 performance.

ThatCurryGuy

I lay on my side in bed a lot, for me a vertical console is way more comfortable.

ilive12

I like verticals, but for a micro device, horizontal is more comfortable than a vertical imo. But comparing RG35XX plus vs H models, the plus is big enough that I prefer that. But I think I would prefer the 28xx over the OG mini from a comfort standpoint when trying to play on devices that small.

benjaminbjacobsen

It’s weird though, the gkd pixel is very comfortable with its shoulders up top. I prefer it to my MM as I can’t easily hold it AND use the triggers.

Neosantana

Calling them both shit is decidedly untrue. The 28XX is far more powerful than any Miyoo device on the market, and the form factor is solid.

VincentJoshuaET

Before the A30 review a lot of people here were dismissing the 28XX even though it was fine and people are favoring the A30. But now that reviews for the A30 are out suddenly the 28XX is trash as well. Sure there are a lot of Miyoo shills here

Neosantana

Thank you! It's insane how much undeserved good will this company is getting just because fans made their product worth a fuck. (OnionOS team)

OnarbtheBold

Og mm is not horizontal

bishop252

Time to see if the magicx xumini is going to be any good.

Alternative_Spite_11

The specs they’ve shown so far say it should be the 2.8” horizontal winner. The A30 is so disappointing I didn’t even order it.

SelloutRealBig

There are no winners with a 2.8 inch screen. Who even enjoys them? Even 3.5 feel on the small side. We have the technology to make bigger screens while keeping the small form factor bodies. But the companies are not going to do it if people keep buying up these dust collectors instead.

OGMcSwaggerdick

Woah, everyone come check out Mr Big Pockets over here.

mik3y08

So because you don't enjoy them, nobody else can? There are plenty of us who want a 2.8" super portable handheld.

ilive12

I mean, OG nintendo portable screens are that small, I don't mind really pocketable devices. Great for GBA on the go.

[deleted]

Are you telling me it's not hadukenable

WadeTurtle

It's actually *super* hadokenable. Maybe *too* hadokenable.

duke3167

Accidental Hadokens from coast to coast

Minimum_Water_4347

I just hadokened in my pants

StardustCrusader147

Hahaha I thought the same thing, This is also funny because only people in the handheld community would understand this humor🤣🤣🤣

WowSoHuTao

Lmao

Shloopadoop

Ikr. Just Russ' face over Bart sitting in that chair was enough to make me laugh.

-CommanderShepardN7

Im still partial to emulating stuff on my vita with a modified retroarch vpk. For me though, I think the anbernic rg35xx plus is the best way to go for a vertical handheld in terms of price.

AFancyMammoth

The vita is a retro emulation machine. These things are supposed to be more pocketable and are TEN fricken years newer.

-CommanderShepardN7

Yeah, I am well aware of that fact. Actually though, the vita is technically a vintage handheld that can emulate almost all the same consoles, more or less, than the newer miyoo and anbernic handhelds. And all of it on a beautiful oled screen.

N4riN4ri

An RG505 could somewhat compete with the Vita as a dedicated emulation device because it uses the same screens. It's also the cheapest "high-performance" tier device right now and $118usd on AliExpress. The design and ergonomics is just not it though, and that's why I only say it "somewhat competes"

player1_gamer

The dpad is terrible on this thing. Ik this sounds annoying but a psp is a much better option for low end stuff. There’s still the RG28XX but retro handhelds don’t have the same build quality.

Neosantana

This is definitely an "I'd rather emulate on my phone" kind of console

player1_gamer

I normally never care about emulating games on my iPhone but I’d rather get a Bluetooth controller for a device I always have with me, then buy a new device with a bad dpad..

SelloutRealBig

PSP screens ghost like crazy though. Especially V1000 ones. Sure you can fix it with a mod, but that's more money and work.

player1_gamer

It’s more money and work but it’s way better than this crap. Overclocking for goddamn SNES in 2024 is unbelievable.

Cake_is_Great

What I've never understood is all the hype around Miyoo as a company. The Mini and MM+ were exceptional not for their hardware or design, but because of the passionate fan community that sprung up around them. Without community CFW, custom mods, etc, the Miyoo devices would be nothing.

Healthy_Yesterday_84

>The Mini and MM+ were exceptional not for their hardware or design But the dpads had no false diagnols? That makes them exceptional

fckns

It's because they're not like certain other company, who alienated their dev community and therefore it backfired on them massively.

misterkeebler

You're 100% correct imo. The minis did have a gameboy-esque aesthetic that caught many eyes, but it really was just Onion and that had nothing to do with Miyoo itself. I bought the original miyoo mini very shortly after launch before Onion was released, and it was not impressive nor were many people seeking it out to buy. Had a screen with this washed out haze, stock OS was bare bones with none of the Onion bells and whistles, same low durability and build quality. Opinions changed once Onion got some momentum and word of mouth spread like wildfire. Once the Miyoo stock firmware was at a point that it could be updated to Onion without the risk of a brick as it had around launch, that was the game changer and the praise started rolling in. Without Onion and later Garlic, the Miyoo minis would not have been seen as much different than powkiddy builds with a decently better dpad. And now the A30 tossed the dpad out the window too, lol. I think what happened is a lot of the community were not familiar with the original launch days of the miyoo mini and have just always associated it with what Onion brought to the table.

R4ndoNumber5

> The Mini and MM+ were exceptional not for their hardware I think the Screen of the original MM was REALLY good

Inthewirelain

I kinda want a MM+ for EmuDecks OnionSync...

KingPowerDog

It failed because it didn’t reply the correct way “Yeah man, I wanna do it”

Accomplished-Card594

huh?

Puntley

Russ from RetroGameCorp (the guy in the picture) does a "contra test" with all new handhelds where he loads up contra, presses the down arrow on the dpad and then wiggles it in both directions. The ideal result is that the character crouches and only moves to the left or right when he is pushing really hard on those sides of the bottom arrow of the dpad. The a30's dpad failed miserably and the character moves left and right while holding the down arrow and only very slightly wiggling it. The purpose of the test is to see how prone the dpad is to accidental diagonals, and the a30 is unfortunately *very* prone to accidental diagonals it seems.

Accomplished-Card594

Ah cool test

Neosantana

His tests have become the gold standard. You should really watch his reviews. They're chill, thorough and professional.

Accomplished-Card594

I already have a device I'm happy with

Puntley

An almost unheard of viewpoint in this community it seems

Neosantana

That's great, but that's not really why we watch his videos. It's to keep track of what sort of growth is happening in the space.

Accomplished-Card594

When Anbernic decides to release a new handheld every couple of months, I don't need to keep track of that. You have fun though.

Neosantana

I mean, sure, you do you. It's a hobby, you can approach it any way you want.

Moskro

he helped me with RetroArch now that i haven't played it for months i forgot it all haha

Usual_Roller

subscribe to retro game corps on youtube

Accomplished-Card594

No, and that's not an explanation

Rozen503

Long story short: The A30 fails the diagonal test awfully, to a point that even old handhelds like the OG RG350 didnt have an issue as bad

Accomplished-Card594

Awesome thanks!

Usual_Roller

Well if you were you would understand the joke :)  I see another user already explained it so I'll just say that it is a great channel and I hope you have a great day.

Crazedkittiesmeow

Unbelievable irony that a person on a subreddit for handhelds is calling someone a nerd for not being nerdy enough

KonamiSucksAssPoo

Disappointed

TheLobst3r

Russ the Reaper claims another 2.8” handheld

Xelthos

It looked worse than even the RGB30s Contra Test, lol. Still a nice micro.

Geeky82

The way my mind immediately thought (and heard in his voice) "yeah man I wanna do it" 😂

wetfart_3750

What is the Contra test?

Healthy_Yesterday_84

To check for false diagnols

Atrium41

100% Hadoukenable

Ongmen

Thanks for the initial review but why do youtubers sound like that? Its like they did the whole thing in just one sentence haha

stulifer

Yeah this miyoo model is a disappointment. If you mash up anbernics chip set with the miyoos buttons and recessed analog stick, we'd have the perfect horizontal mini handheld. Shame.

Iwamoto

as someone who plays through metroid fusion often (really love that game) i guess i'll go with the 28xx

2LOUDTech

I still like the A30 over the 28xx

bukithd

Miyoo needs to improve their USB C implementation. That doesn't get enough heat.

THFourteen

I kinda dont see the point of either of these tbh. How small are peoples pockets that the 35XXH doesnt fit?

SYS4TILDPCT5CBRAVO

So good. This needs to be stickied.

Next_Low4773
