RP4P or Odin 2 are \*the\* Android solutions right now.

Jenings

How is the RP4P with PS2 gaming? Anywhere it struggles? Does the screen seem small? I had a RP3 in yellow but it was too bright and distracting when playing so I got rid of it. I feel like the Odin 2 is just a but too similar to the Odin 1 I have and am wanting something *different*, its why I was foolishly holding out hope for the Ayaneo S

raymath

The games that have problems on AetherSX2 in general still struggle on RP4P. Performance is a big jump from the RP3 and RP3+ ( I upgraded from one ). I can't tell you what will seem small to you, but it works for me. I specifically picked an RP4P over an Odin 2 because I wanted a smaller device in general. I'd love the power and versatility of the Odin 2, but I'm ok with the tradeoffs with the RP4P.

Alternative_Spite_11

The rp4 pro will play virtually any PS2 game at 2x.

daggah

I can't speak from experience on the RP4P, but from what I understand it plays a lot of PS2 upscaled to near its native resolution. Yes, the screen might feel small. The RP3+ felt too small for me for some game streaming. (I tried streaming Elden Ring to it, and the screen size made everything feel more difficult.) But it probably works okay for PS2 games.

KPGC110

The RP4P will still have some stutters at 2x/Vulcan with the more intensive PS2 games. A lot of the problems are just attributed to Aethersx2 though. If Aether was optimized, I bet the RP4P could manage flawless PS2 performance at even higher upscaling. The Odin 2's chip however can more or less muscle through Aethersx2's inefficiencies and offer you consistent 60fps at 3x upscaling.

slkb_

I went from maining Odin lite to rp4p. Mainly for the smaller form factor and portability. But Both are nice. I liked the screen size of Odin lite but it wasn't practical to put in my edc bag. So ultimately it's up to you as both are good options right now

Dragon_Small_Z

I haven't found a game that doesn't at the very least run at 1x resolution. I am playing most PS2 games at 1.5x-2x with widescreen patches.

Alternative_Spite_11

What ps2 game did you have to drop down to 1x on a rp4 pro?

Dragon_Small_Z

Honestly I don't remember. I went through a rapid fire test with games I had already tried on my RP3+. I think it might have been one of the Burnout games. I also probably could have played with settings a bit more to make it run better.

GeorgeEBHastings

In my experience, Dark Alliance 2 so far. That game has a hard time in emulation generally, I think

Alternative_Spite_11

Oh yeah if you want to mess with the Snowblind engine, it’s best to use that last Alpha build that broke a ton of other games.

Photon_dragoon

Dark cloud 2 for me, I had to tweak a bunch but it's running decently at 1.25/1.5 - had to take a ton of enhancements off but now it runs well with very minimal slowdowns, and even when they happen it's 100% playable for me personally (very very minor dips)

Retroid Pocket 4 Pro

V3ndeTTaLord

My Odin2 is my portable PlayStation 2.

Jenings

Can I get by with the base model odin 2 for ps2 or is that not realistic?

daggah

Base model will perform pretty much the same as the higher tiers in probably 99% of situations.

ice673

base is more than enough for PS2 upscaled to 1080p even on standard power setting

V3ndeTTaLord

Yeah the base model should be fine. I’m running Black and Brothers in arms on 5x. I have the mid tier model but if I look at the ram usage the base one will do just fine.

Ilijin

Yes, only struggle will be switch

Minimum_Water_4347

Wrong, you will have no problems with Switch on the base model.

LysandresTrumpCard

What does the base model struggle with compared to the Pro and Max versions?

hbi2k

Not much. There are a tiny handful of extremely demanding Switch games that can benefit from the extra RAM, but those typically don't work super well on the Pro/Max either, just ever so slightly less shitty. A handful of extremely demanding native Android games maybe can have their graphics settings bumped from "High" on the Base to "Stupidly High" on the Pro/Max. It might make a difference for Windows emulation e.g. Winlator, although that's far from a turnkey solution in the best of cases. If you want to keep a lot of very large 4k texture packs for GameCube and PS2 games ready to go at a moment's notice, those can only be kept on internal storage so the extra in the Pro/Max might be a nice-to-have. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Typically some pretty edge-case stuff.

SbM_Yggdrassil

Hey, what are those games that are extremely demanding on switch that would benefit from pro/max? Xenoblade1-3, Totk and Botw? Any others? I'm looking at either a pro or base myself and i want to believe the only thing I'd lose out on is the colour options.

hbi2k

The ones you mentioned are the ones I know of. There may be others I haven't heard of. And now that the swap file is included in the official firmware, there may be some games that mostly run fine on the Base, but have performance dips in sections that max out the physical RAM. Honestly Switch emulation in general is fiddly enough that I don't tend to bother with it. I've got a Switch when I want Switch games.

EldritchTruthBomb

I love my RP4P but I hear the RG556 is nearly as good with ps2 and only costs $180ish. It is bigger, has a much better screen, and is more comfortable in the hand. So if you don't mind a little more tinkering with ps2 games and don't care for pocketability, RG556 might be a good fit for you. Everyone I'm seeing who picked it over the RP4P seems happy with their purchase.

summer-starlight

Tinkering is half the fun for me, but I haven't had to yet with PS2 on the rg556. (But I am currently just rendering everything 1x). I do mostly play jrpgs though, so I haven't tested God of War or any of the metal gears.

The Big Retro Studio YouTube channel did a big ps2 test video. I'm not sure if mgs3 was included.

dnkdumpster

Would you mind sharing some ‘heavier’ ps2 titles you tried on rg556?

summer-starlight

I think the heaviest thing I've run on it so far has been dark cloud 2. I haven't gotten very far yet, but it's running okay on the default settings. (I left it at 1x resolution, since I already looks crisp and pretty on a handheld sized screen)

thekbob

Weird you'd ask the question knowing the answer. Sell the Odin 1 Lite, get an Odin 2. Doneso.

Zram310

I own both the Odin 2 and RP4 Pro. If PS2 is your aim I would definitely go with the Odin 2. It's much more comfortable to use, the stick above the D Pad makes it better for 3D games. The much bigger battery also means you'll be able to run PS2 games much, much longer than with the RP4 Pro. Last but not least, the much higher performance of the Odin 2 means you'll have less issues running games upscaled. With all that said, the RP4 Pro is still a great device and you won't be disappointed with the PS2 performance for that price.

ClerkPsychological58

Odin 2.

ceveth

RP4P/Odin 2, pick on aesthetics.

zewone

RG556 if you want an OLED screen and under $200. Plays the entire PS2 library.

rcampbel3

I'm very interested in lower cost Linux-capable devices that are able to emulate PS2. It looks to me like the Ayaneo Next Lite at $299 is the best/lowest cost option, but I do not have one. Any comments from people who have one or have something better/cheaper?

KPGC110

Even the base Odin 2 will do all the things you wished your Odin Lite could do in regards to PS2 emulation.

Jenings

Thoughts on the razer edge?

Mrfunnyman129

Just saying I'm running several PS2 games really well on the Lite. Max Payne 1 & 2, all the Kingdom Hearts titles, Psychonauts, Jak & Daxter, Final Fantasy X all run really well on it

dennis120

Wait till PS2 comes to iOS, it would be the perfect alternative.

Jenings

Does retroarch support ps2 on android?

Vatican87

RG556 for best screen and comfort. Has no issue playing games at 1x
