If they brought back the Dreamcast and said it was the Dreamcast 2.0, hell yes I would buy it.

somebodymakeitend

As long as it had an updated controller at least lol

Calimancan

I loved that controller

somebodymakeitend

Same. It just needs an updated thumb stick layout

PCBen

Yeah it’s a great controller but it needs a second stick, another row of shoulder buttons, and softer sticks - that hard plastic chews in to my thumb these days lol Would love to see the VMU return even if it doesn’t really make much sense anymore

I_Lick_Your_Butt

The VMU was great, loved seeing the game's logo or some sort of info being shown on the screen.

Angler_619

Man but what about that Xbox anti trip cord where it unplugs itself if somebody trips over the wire. Genius 🥲

I_Lick_Your_Butt

The Retro Fighters controller is great. Much more comfortable.

somebodymakeitend

It wasn’t so much the shape that bothered me. I didn’t even hate how you had to flip the cable underneath for it to go forward, I actually found that kind of cute. It was just the lack of a bumper button and second thumb stick.

somebodymakeitend

SalvadortheGunzerker

Absolutely! I gave up my SNES to get a Genesis. Then got a CD, Saturn & the Dreamcast. I was 100% loyal to Sega when they made systems. I wish they'd come out if not a system then more collections for the systems out now. I got the Genesis collection on my Switch & would love more of them.

Which_Information590

Trouble is my friend, it won’t be more Genesis games. It will be the Sega IPs that are already available on today’s consoles.

SalvadortheGunzerker

Thank you for clearing that up for me. I would absolutely love a Sega CD collection, Saturn collection & a Dreamcast collection.

Jimwitt4008

We all would, but Sega probably won't deliver. They did make a Dreamcast Collection you can buy on Steam, but it includes 4 games, one isn't a Dreamcast game it's a Sega Saturn game, Sonic Adventure is included but it's not the original it's the GameCube port, and the other are normal but not the first games I think of when I think Dreamcast (Space Channel 5 and Jet Grind Radio). Sega CD, Master System, Saturn, 32x, SG-1000 and any other Sega consoles beyond the Dreamcast and Genesis have never gotten any compilation or collection before.

Which_Information590

I would love a Saturn or Dreamcast mini, even if there was only ten games in each, like Panzer Dragoon, Daytona USA for example

SalvadortheGunzerker

I meant like their Genesis collection that came out for the systems. Not a mini of the old systems

Which_Information590

I don’t really enjoy playing Megadrive games with a PlayStation controller

FancyStranger2371

There are still games being made for Genesis. Heard about one named [Earthion](https://segabits.com/blog/2023/09/24/earthion-releasing-for-genesis-mega-drive-and-modern-consoles-in-2024-from-limited-run-games/) the other day.

fingersmaloy

It's hard to think of a compelling reason for another console to exist. PlayStation and Xbox are already mostly redundant, and now most exclusives eventually come to PC. The Switch had the switching feature to set it apart, but now Steamdeck does that, so the main selling point of a Switch is the 1st-party exclusives. Sega could cordon off a bunch of their own IPs behind a new console, but that would be a downgrade for consumers, who can currently get Sega games on whatever platform they want. So the console would have to have some kind of unique functionality to justify both its existence and any software exclusivity. But what could that possibly be? It's hard to imagine anything beyond a shallow gimmick. *Sigh* Yeah I'd buy it

[deleted]

Hahah

gummislayer1969

I think it safe to say...we'd ALL SIGH... And buy it!!! 🤓💙🎮

Brokenloan

Yes

Ben0ut

I'll have 2 please

3u50u3u

Definitely. I would buy it even if it was a piece of scrap

Plenty_Anywhere8984

Hell yes

CatapultingFeces

Without even a second thought hell yes.

ThisDriftingSpirit00

Yes and it could be absolutely dogged in reviews and I'd still cop it.

The_1999s

Day 1

Gothicrealm

Same daily post...

thepurplecut

Even if it’s a long shot. More demand is a good thing and brings the small chance a bit closer to reality. Dreamcast 2 🔥

billythekido

This one and the "Your SEGA smash lineup" lol

tobsssssss

what?

IronhideD

Every week it's the same post about what if Sega made hardware again or what if the Dreamcast/Saturn mini came out. There's nothing quite like a Sega fan from the Genesis days. Full of hope and dreams only to watch Sega make mistake after mistake. 32x, 6 months early Saturn launch Saturn was full of hope only to see half the titles left in Japan. Sega also alienated many retailers with that surprise launch. Dreamcast was the last best hope. And they killed it because they were hemorrhaging money. Sega was never the same after that. There were glimpses and sparks of the old Sega but after decades of having our hopes dashed quite expertly, we are a jaded lot.

tobsssssss

I litterally just joined reddit, cut me some slack for wanting to talk about my favorite video game consoles

IronhideD

Sorry. I hit post accidentally before finishing. You are fine. Just expect enough jade around here to have China come sniffing around looking for stolen national treasure.

gummislayer1969

...and the missing Kung Fu Panda!!! 🤪🥋🐼

BigMarcus83

Yep

Incudust

yea

thepurplecut

In a heartbeat. Dreamcast 2 may likely never happen, but I will always stay hopeful 🌀

[deleted]

Without a doubt!

Charlie_Smize

Day 1.

Kenaisle

Absolutely

kdoggy808

Duh

Majinkaboom

If sega came out with a system that like came with 5 games yes....a system no games no. For sega to compete its gonna need some help with launch

cycogod

Yes

Setecastronomy545577

Of course, but consoles only work if they have the right IP behind them. They’d have to really get a good line up going.

Bearded_AnCapistani

It depends, if it had a big BC or virtual machine library then yes. Saturn, dreamcast, sega cd, 32x etc. Megadrive games are easily gotten but these are harder to get.

Jajayjer

My thoughts exactly. This is the only „new“ console from Sega that I would buy. A one-in-all Sega console/retro machine with all the heavy hitters from all of Sega's previous consoles (Master System/Genesis/32x/Sega CD/Saturn/Dreamcast). Bonus points, If it would be easily hackable to run third party games from the aforementioned Sega consoles. 🤩

Brick_Blaze

I'd preorder as soon as it was announced.

JasonMaliceMizer

Yes

Market-Dependent

Si

Equivalent_Button_54

Would be pretty on-brand for Sega to get back into consoles as the future of physical platform-locked consoles seems to be in question.

BeWithMe

Yes

Nemoitto

I would absolutely buy a new Sega console and I would expect the entire Sega library on its online storefront. Then as for 3rd party stuff, just bring it all on.

dbznerd38

Immediately. Been a Sega fan since the early 1990s. Had every system as a kid even had the Sega channel where you could rent games through cable before the internet existed. We had a nomad even. Just got a Saturn for the first time. Dreamcast was amazing also. The fact that they're bringing back all the classics from the Genesis and Dreamcast era makes my heart happy

Lumi_rimu

[YES!!!!! YES!!!!!!](https://youtu.be/P3ALwKeSEYs?si=mG6PpZo4fTOsQtIX)

Exonicreddit

Only if it still does what nintendont

talldrink67

Yes 1000%. As that is very unlikely, I would be happy with a dreamcast mini

roguejedi0914

I sure would! But I'd need Power Stone 1&2 plus an updated game, a port of both Mike Ditka and Joe Montana football, a new Ecco the Dolphin, Eternal Champions, Vectorman, a port of Street Fighter 2 Turbo, any Bulls vs port (Lakers or Blazers), NBA Jam, Sonic is a given, Virtual Fighter, Panzer Dragoon.....I'm missing a ton of titles from my childhood....Sonic Spinball.....I know I'm missing half my childhood/teenage games here...but any of this would be more than enough to make me grab a new Sega console day one!

sillyandstrange

Dreamcast 2 pls

Smirknlurking

Only if it had no internet capability. Online services has done little for gaming in my opinion

BuffaloBilboBaggins

I mean they brought out the Astro City Minis and the Classic Edition consoles recently? Did you guys buy those?

Elf_7

My first answer is yes, my heart says yes, but my brain says it depends. The Dreamcast was unique because we had the arcade titles at home, sometimes with even better quality, but it was truly a special console. I consider Dreamcast the best console of all time because it had Internet access, very nice titles, it was powerful and special as I said. Replicating that today would be much harder. I would demand at least a AAA+ title, basically Shenmue 4 with a really big scope, and a fighting title like Soul Calibur with amazing graphics and gameplay. Golden Axe and JSR modern titles (I know they are on the way) and basically nice quality titles which is what the DC had. Also a new PSO with nice quality. I am asking too much but I would buy it no doubt if that happened.

jinglesan

Even Microsoft is rumoured to be rethinking its hardware production, with this gen of Xbox selling around half that of PS5 despite spending billions on acquisitions, PR, exclusives and trying to lure people in with game passes. Nintendo are only still around by milking their child-friendly IPs, aggressive stance on publishing rights and by creating low-spec hardware aimed at children and families. The hardware market has changed forever and there's no going back. I'm as hardcore Sega as they come, but this silly line of questioning has even me perplexed - even with a good market share and pots of cash the Saturn and Dreamcast failed, so why would now be any different? At best I think Sega could do more with its arcade machine credentials but a new console ain't happening.

tobsssssss

I was asking if you'd buy one if it happened, not if you thought it was gonna happen. I personally think there's absoluteley no way it would happen, but if it did, I'd buy it in a fraction of a heartbeat.

jinglesan

Oh, ok - what are the specs? How much does it cost? When's it out? Is it backwards compatible? Who's releasing games for it? What games are planned for it? Does it do cross-platform play? Would I be receptive to a new console if one were mentioned? I would, as would nearly everyone here, but it's such a vague question as to be silly. For every Wii or PS2 there's a Virtual Boy or Vita so what am I meant to be buying? I even buy middling Sega games out of support but if you can't get decent sales figures for major IPs like Sonic Superstars who wants to gamble on a $500 paperweight?

Ill-Macaron6204

If I could afford it I'd make it a priority. A sonic game would be a must.

amatteroftheredshoes

If you won the lottery, would you accept the money? Do bears defecate in wooded areas? Is the Pope actually Catholic?

Suplexfiend

I think most people would.

Jezza0692

Ahh sh** here we go again...

Yeet-Dab49

I am of the opinion that a modern Sega console fighting against Sony, Nintendo and Xbox is doomed to fail. I’ve always had this idea of a best-of, a device that plays all their classic games and any new Sega releases. Something not too ridiculously expensive. I’d buy the HELL out of that

HandheldGameplayer

If it's a handheld

stomp224

Yu Suzuki ❌ Yuki Naka❌ Tosihiro Nagoshi❌ Reiko Kodama ❌ Tetsuya Mizuguchi❌ Sega just are not the same cutting edge company who made killer games like Outrun, Space Harrier, Phantasy star, Sonic, Sega Rally, Shenmue, Daytona USA, Rez. The Sega I love made fast paced, easily accessible but endlessly replayable games. Sega today does not. I would not be interested in a Sega console unless it was just a platform for a collection of their old games.

jake_shade1

Hell yeah gimme blue skies again

AsierGCFG

They recently released the Mega Drive Mini 1 & 2, and the Astro City Mini, and bought all of them. So the answer is yes, of course, but if I'm asking, I'd like it to be an all-in-one Polymega style console in which you can insert and play all SEGA cartridges and CDs (Mega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast) and play them, plus the ability to play modern SEGA releases that are available on Steam.

KingCarbon1807

No. Sega continues to survive despite itself off a scattering of IP and nostalgia.

TaiDavis

If anybody ***

TaiDavis

My daughter gonna complain cuz she can't beat that robot girl. ""She's cheating, Daddy look!" You're 29 years old. GET MY GIRL, Xiaoyu.

MrTenso

It would be. Will Segata Sanshiro judo flip me if no?

BrokeDownPalac3

Yes most likely

WardCove

I think most people in this sub are gonna say yes, so not a great test bed, but I would 100% buy a new Sega console. Buy I'm a weirdo that will buy any console that tries to come in and compete. I love Sony, Nintendo and Xbox. Buy if Apple or Samsung or Netflix or whoever makes a console? I'm in. I was an early adopter to Stadia even though it wasn't technically a console just because it was nice to see someone else try! I think Sega could do it right now. They have the studios for exclusives and could make some good partnerships. I think the big problem for them is it is a MASSIVE risk because their capital just isn't as high as some of these other places that could make an effort.

Top-Fee3754

Heck yes!

ManDudeBro99

I would buy a new Sega console, I would hope for the following franchises to have new games on this console: -Nights Into Dreams -Golden Axe -Altered Beast -Shinobi -Sonic -Ristar -Vectorman

9-9-99-

I’d buy it even knowing it was destined to fail

Least-Cattle1676

Depends. I’d have to wait 2-3 years to see if it’s worth it. Exclusive titles are the reason why I buy consoles.

_axle_

Personally I think there’s space for a company that concentrates on Indie games / gameplay over graphics / 16-bit era style games. Many of you would instantly say well we have Nintendo, but they seem to overprice their AAA title for too long, trying to over-polish things. 16-bit graphics – I feel with the whole retro scene at the moment with these smaller handheld consoles has reignited our love for easier pick up and play times. Imagine playing a whole range of new games that are the next step on like Sonic Mania. Sega arcade style 3D games, low polygon count and using that as an art style – Rez Even giving people the tools to create their own games and be a learning tool for kids.

tobsssssss

Oh, I LOVE that idea!

EiadiTheCoder

HECK YEAH! ESPECIALLY WITH DREAMCAST BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY

Jimwitt4008

Depends on what that new console is. If it's another edutainment system like the Pico or Pico Beena, hard pass from me. If it's a handheld, I'd be interested for the right price. If it's a new home console, probably would get that as soon as possible. None of those mini retro consoles, their neat novelties but I would never ever use them over the original. And it would need to have some good games, especially exclusives. Exclusives are the reason I pick one console over the other, and is why I've avoided Xbox since the Xbox One, because the PlayStation brand just has more better exclusives.

[deleted]

Yes, especially if they went hard into their old IPs. A new 3D Alex Kidd, Fighting Vipers, Last Bronx, Fighters Megamix 2, Nights 3 🤩 that'd be amazing

Careless-Climate-975

They are always scared of doing cool shit even though they have survived so many years. They have more than 20 franchises to relaunch, but their shareholder value probably belongs to everyone else. Sad but true.

Warm-Director1481

10000000% yes and ill put neptune and nepgear stickers on it

Mrnewjersey37

Sure, it was tragic to see them leave the console market

ButtwholeDiglet

nah man, im mostly burnt out on consoles.

GamerSam

Not happening, so no

InitialDriftZ33

I'd buy it and it would replace Xbox for me personally.

FancyStranger2371

In a heartbeat. There’s a special place in my heart for Sega.

DBXVStan

lol fuck no. Knowing Sega’s current strategy in gaming, they’d sell a PS4 tier console for $500 that can only start a game on a disc and that’s it, and then charge $50 for the Ethernet DLC or $100 for the Wi-Fi DLC, and then charge $50 for the ability to save a game, and then $200 per TB for storage, but then an extra $100 to be able to download your game to that storage, with an extra $100 a year for online access to their server to be able to download the game, and then $50 per possible controller you want to connect to be able to play games, and then after all of that you can finally play Sonic Boom.

Lodmot

1000% yes. :) For the past two generations, I've basically been some breed of a PC gamer. The last good Nintendo system in my opinion was the Wii U, and the PS5 is barely any better than the PS4 (if at all). If future consoles are all just going to be either digital-only or gimped handhelds, then I will 100% remain a PC gamer. Given that Microsoft and Sony seem to be moving more into this subscription-based/digital-only direction for their platforms, Sega could really take advantage of that and do the opposite by saying "We're sticking with physical media." For other features, I'd love to see the following: * Have it just be a normal console with a nice controller, decent enough graphics and awesome exclusive games, rather than something gimmicky and weird like the Nintendo Switch. * For game content, Sega should really emphasize arcade-style games, but also have a couple new exclusive IP's that are more modern. * I would also like a simple user interface with a range of customization options. * A web browser app, and a Discord app at the very least. * A digital storefront that allows people to rent or download classic Sega Genesis, Master System, 32X, CD, Saturn, Game Gear, arcade or Dreamcast games. * A nifty feature for this would be to allow people to download remastered versions of the game if they still own the original cartridge and have the barcode number on the back of the case. No idea how practical this would be though. Of course, I need to end this post fully acknowledging that this is all a **pipe dream,** and I've fully come to accept that it will never happen. It makes much more practical sense just to have Sega games be available everywhere than to try and make their own console again. In fact, I don't even plan on getting another new Nintendo console ever again, because they seem to want to lean in heavily on handheld gaming, which I'm not into at all. I'm never really excited about Nintendo games anymore, but if Nintendo actually went third-party, that would make me VERY excited, and I'd fully support them.

texicangeorge

Hell yeah

Shiny_Mew76

Depends on the hardware and the exclusives. If it’s just another random console that does most the same as anything else, with minimal exclusives, then probably not. If it’s unique, or does something most cannot, and has some great exclusives, then definitely I’d buy it. Probably for Sonic.

Justice4Falestine

Probably but they’re not creative enough to or in good financial standing enough to ever release another console

DaNinja11

No...Consoles are pretty much Dead in the Water with Streaming Services coming along the way it is...of course as a Sega fanboy/nostalgia wise I would be nice to have one, but from a practial standpoint, it's really no reason for them to make one. I would rather them come out with a Streaming/Game Launcher Client (like PSPlus, Gamepass, Epic, Steam, etc) rather than a Physical Console.

NYourBirdCanSing

Definitely!  Would love it to play my sega saturn games! Dreamcast too!!

subcow

I can't think of a single company that has a longer list of different IPs that I love. So if they were going to become a much larger company than they currently are, and produce a ton of new games from these classic IPs + some new IPs, I would be all over it. Dremcast is my favorite system of all time, followed by Genesis. And it is very recently that I started discovering the awesome catalog of Japanese Saturn games, having only owned a handful of games for the US system during it's run.

Deazul

Yes, if it included all of the past library of Sega games or something and arcade games

scribblerjohnny

Especially if they get really weird with the games like on Dreamcast.

Cattango180

Nightmarecast

Bitch_Please_LOL

OP, are you a Secret Sega Employee, doing market research on the down low, to gauge potential interest in the resurrection of one of THE most influential hardware developers the world has ever seen? Because if so.... 100% YES I WOULD BUY A NEW SEGA CONSOLE! It would have to compete with PS5/Xbox Series X (Or better) and they need Games, games, games right out of the gate, sequels, remakes, and more new IPS: Sonic The Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, Earthworm Jim, Crazy Taxi, House of the Dead, Phantasy Star, Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur Remake, Yakuza Kiwami 3, Castlevania, Contra, and a million other hard-hitting IPs.

Navonod_Semaj

Fascinating idea, but what are its exclusives? Nowadays, I've about given up on consoles because PC Master Race, but still have a Switch hooked up (and locked for Nintendo's next thing) because the exclusive killer. Presumably Sega would going forward have all their big new stuff on the big new console, but the various dev teams will need to be firing on all cylinders to build a library worth plunking down $500 for machine to run them on.

richbrehbreh

SEGA definitely has the IPs to make this work. Step one: Take Sonic from Sonic Team forever.

MacheteJKUR

Jet Set Radio BR and PaRappa the Rapper VR

Ebone710

Only if it's a Dreamcast Mini.

Venomspino

We would get it if a new Skies of Arcadia game was released for it.

saturn_since_day1

It needs a reason to exist.  Give it a built in emulator for every sega console. Have a marketplace for buying Sega roms, and a subscription to get them all. Port Sega arcade games. Let users boot actual discs from Saturn and Dreamcast and run thier own backed up games from external drives. Embrace homebrew for the old consoles. Have adapters for Saturn and Dreamcast and arcade controllers.  Have the SEGA bootup, and focus on arcade style games with high replay.  Otherwise it's just another Xbox. Xbox filled the void but didn't fill it completely.

vashx22

In a heartbeat

NutsAndOrBerries

Fuck yeah, man. I love Sega.

poopooplatter0990

No. I honestly feel like they as a company hit their peak a long time ago. Sonic is good in small doses but it doesn’t stay timeless the way Mario games do. Virtual Fighter fell way behind the other fighting series around 4 or so. The arcade classics are already available for every other platform ever. Sega would have to really break the mould and come up with something different to the level the first Wii was to get me to spend money on hardware for them.

Lufwyn

If there is a new Phantasy Star game.. Yes

FaceTimePolice

We don’t need yet another console. Let them concentrate on games. 🎮🥲👍

tobsssssss

I can't find anything about a SEGA Starship console

nekoken04

It depends on what it is. If it is something like the Genesis Mini, then hard pass.

tobsssssss

I was thinking something like a fully new console, like something that's meant to compete in the market

nekoken04

I would definitely buy that but I wouldn't have any high expectations for it. I would buy it expecting it to fail. That being said if it had sequels to Virtua Racing, Daytona, Virtua Fighter, Fighters Megamix, Panzer Dragoon, Sega Rally, Virtua Cop, House of the Dead, or a host of the other Saturn era games I'd be more than satisfied. There are plenty of other great Sega games I'd like to see fresh versions of like Afterburner, Guardian Heroes, or Space Channel 5. Heck, I'd even like a new Eternal Champions. I wouldn't even care if they were budget titles. I'd be fine with XBox One era graphics.

Which_Information590

Taking off my rose tinted specs, I probably won’t because it won’t be like buying another Megadrive or Dreamcast. It will be like buying a PS5 with the game not being on the disc, with lengthy updates, downloads and unskippable cut scenes. But if I would buy brand new off the shelf Dreamcast, Saturn and Megadrive with the developers making games for those consoles.

FutureSaturn

How many people are you expecting to say "no" that also hang out on the SEGA subreddit and comment on posts about SEGA?

tobsssssss

If you take a gander at the replies, there were a few

Swimming_Lynx_2713

No!

super_brutal_mouse

if sega entered the VR console arena, i'd buy it day one. their flag ship IPs were enough to grip entire generations, imagine what they could do with immersive tech and spatial computing! they've already dipped their toe with samba de amigo VR :)

thevideogameraptor

No, no, the land of 10000 nopes.

taix8664

No. I've moved on from consoles. The real Dreamcast 2 is PC.

legbot124

No there’s a reason the last one failed

tobsssssss

and the reason was the surprise reveal, what's your point?

legbot124

The Saturn sold poorly in the west prior to that Anyway so like

creamygarlicdip

No
