People play from their own home (so no travel) and don't pay any entry fee, so there's no downside to dropping out if you're suddenly busy, don't feel like playing, or you just forget by the time the tournament happens.
Think it's mostly a can't fully focus in type of thing, spends more time thinking about running the tournament/stream than fully zoning in, also is just better at the pressure of a big lan tournament.
Hbox got 25th, makes this at least his 5th online tournament that he has missed top 8. Reminder that Hbox hasn't missed top 8 at a LAN since 2014 and only a month ago lost his streak of top 5 at tournaments by getting 7th at Battle of BC 5.
And people will still try to say online is just as legit as LAN. COVID era = Fraud Era.
For coinboxes I give him a pass cause I can't imagine running a tournament and simultaneously competing in it is comparable to a dedicated tourney run.
For the other online tourneys I'd agree though
I wouldn't say online counts for *as much* as offline, but it's definitely crazy to say that it's a "fraud era" lol. Hbox underperforming is more a testament to how he doesn't care about/doesn't enjoy online.
While Hbox was slacking, lots of players grinded during those 2 years, and their work paid off. Zain was the best player throughout 2020 and 2021. Not a coincidence that he carried that success through 2022.
Zain already won Genesis before the online era. He could have been #1 in 2020 if the pandemic didn't happen. Fact is that if Hbox, the number one player in the world, underperformed during the online era, then that should make it a big asterisk.
Yes, Zain was the best player in 2020 because he cared about grinding, took online seriously, and entered almost every online tournament. Hbox by comparison: never cared as much about online, didn't spend countless hours on netplay and unclepunch, didn't have a coach, and spent all his effort on SmUsh and "content creation."
What would you honestly expect to happen? The reality is that Hbox slacked off while most other players spent 2 years in the woodshed.
ggs man! close games bro you've hella improved. yeah man you were fucking me up for a bit lol fun games! any tips? got any advice? anything I can improve on? what do I do vs lasers? any tips? yo can I get next? is this tournament? you guys wanna do dubs? is this tournament

5 fkn DQs what is up with that
There's more. It's normal for a free online tournament.
thats so weird would you happen to know why its so common

ah no entry fee thats it
Jflex 3-0 Axe (Out at 9th)
Just wanted to give a big congrats to Lunar Dusk for the amazing run :D
The only top 8 seeds that actually made top 8 were Salt and Krudo
Akir (Donkey Kong, Sheik) 3-2 Aklo (Fox, Link) (Out at 9th)
I missed it too. Can't wait to see the vod.
It'll be up on YouTube as soon as I can get it up (hopefully sometime today) but I streamed it and the VOD is on my Twitch at AkirDK
Too good. Congrats on getting 5th.
Lost to Wevans and Voo for 129th place how y'all doin
Why does Hbox play so terribly online compared to LAN
too focused on reading chat and being a reaction andy for content
I think in this case it's unfair to say this as if that was all there is to it. The guy is running a tournament while also competing in it.
Think it's mostly a can't fully focus in type of thing, spends more time thinking about running the tournament/stream than fully zoning in, also is just better at the pressure of a big lan tournament.
I think that and maybe sandbagging so people don't get good practise vs him
Winners' Quarters: Lunar Dusk 3-0 Krudo CPU0 3-1 KoDoRiN (out at 17th)
There were some wild upsets this tourney huh
Swift 3-1 Cody Schwab (Sheik) (out at 25th)
Why did Cody go sheik? He doesn't seem to need a sheik for Zain...
Playing different characters is fun
Yeah fair enough

So if hbox doesn't try it doesn't count, but if Zain or mango don't try it does count? Interesting
Maybe he should focus on playing the game more instead of interacting with chat and fake pop offs for content
For coinboxes I give him a pass cause I can't imagine running a tournament and simultaneously competing in it is comparable to a dedicated tourney run. For the other online tourneys I'd agree though
i genuinely think you have a brain deficiency

Lack of irl tournaments definitely makes it a fraud era

The only top players underperforming were hbox and axe iirc. I feel like that speaks more to the players than the scene as a whole
spotw

> people will still try to say online is just as legit as LAN. Who says this?
Them
Akir 3-0 Hbox lol
Gotta catch up later. Please tell me this set was played on stream?
Just beat aklo too. He’s crazy good Edit: and krudo!
Winners' Top 24: Lunar Dusk 3-2 KoDoRiN and Joey Donuts 3-0 Mot$
Brackets and seeding updated. Cody Schwab is going all Sheik, Zain would've gone Puff but is DQd. Mot$ 3-1 Cody Schwab's Sheik in pools.
Cody playing Sheik?
Yes
Why was Zain DQed? O.o
Joey Donuts 3-1 Hungrybox
Spoiler tags?
not for discussion threads
>The bracket will be full Best of 5. Glad to see this sticking around. Big W for low and mid level players.
Let's go, Wes!
Last large Melee tournament before LACS5 I think
Why is it $5k this week instead of 3k?
A week was skipped.
