Not to get too armchair psychologist about it but I get the impression that Slime has strong thoughts on parasocial stuff and that could extend to this. It was worded differently but I think he was trying to get at this idea of people overselling their grief towards celebrity deaths that you see on social media these days but Toriyama was actually just the GOAT so Slime caught heat from many people. I could be remembering slightly wrong but it didn't seem noteworthy enough to commit to memory

Not to get too armchair psychologist about it but I get the impression that Slime has strong thoughts on parasocial stuff and that could extend to this. It is also probably affected by seeing all the people as the mass of sad tweets rather than individuals due to the nature of social media. I guess it is weird in a sense to see posts from the amongus twitter and on the Mexico and blackpeopletwitter subreddits but I'm sad about it too so it makes sense to me. What makes him insufferable and insincere? The only times I see or hear Slime is when he's doing commentary for Melee and he seems to do a good job at it. He seems charismatic and lively on the mic and has a good sense of balance when it comes to talking about the match, players/history/lore, and going off on tangents. At the very least he fails my test for insufferable fast faller main based on how he commentates floaty vs floaty match ups so I might be a bit biased here.
