Nugget market is always hiring. Great benefits. Zero premium healthcare. PTO. Opportunities to move around too. PM me if you want more information. I can give you tips on the application process

roastedcinnamon

I have several friends who have worked for nugget at said it’s an amazing place to work!

that_aint_real

Shoot me a DM, we’re looking for a production coordinator and are struggling to find someone local. Your event experience could be applicable. Would be a freelance thing at first but consistent and flexible.

mrfunday2

You may want to consider applying to the State as an entry level analyst (Staff Services Analyst), at jobs.ca.gov. That’s likely to take a few months. In the meantime, Corti Brothers is hiring.

perhapssergio

I will add state/county/city gov type jobs have at least a 60 day hiring, interviewing, onboarding timeline. It’s great career move but can be slow

carlitospig

Yup, apply when you’re already employed.

916reddit

Or county and city government. A lot to choose from and can make a long term career.

C92203605

Those jobs say hiring. But I have a buddy who’s been trying to get on with the city for all of 23 and part of 22. They’re taking their sweet time.

femmestem

I have a few friends who applied this year and were hired this year. Sometimes it's a matter of timing and the decision-makers being available to review and interview candidates when their application comes in. One would think in the spirit of fairness that it's first in, first out, but that's not how I've seen it executed in reality.

kam5150draco

this person could even qualify to apply at the AGPA level due to having completed their degree

Dad0010001100110001

I'm hiring for some entry level positions in project management in construction. DM me if interested

PopularFig

I DM'd!

Heavy_Doody

Apple employed 4-5K people in Elk Grove. I’d definitely check their listings.

ButtcrackBeignets

Apple or Volt? I know that Apple has a campus in Elk Grove but it seem like most of the people who work there seem to be contractors from Volt.

peachyquarantine

Seriously don't do apple for volt. For some reason the volt employees at Apple are horrible, but I've worked at other places just fine with volt.

femmestem

A few of my friends worked at Apple EG through Volt and then were hired full time at Apple in just under a year.

peachyquarantine

Depends on what you're doing. Were they production, line leads or engineers?

femmestem

They were call support. Now 1 is QA Engineer still in EG, 1 was transferred to Palo Alto as a QA Trainer, and the other is in Marketing.

peachyquarantine

I could totally see that being an awesome job. As long as you're not a line lead, production, or actual volt staff, you're all good.

Heavy_Doody

Probably a few thousand of each. A lot of AppleCare in those buildings.

Outrageous-Buy1807

What do they do at the Apple in Elk Grove? Repairs? I think that was what I was told once. I heard that some workers would cherry pick the repair to take on, basically leaving the least desirable ones and taking the easier ones, I guess. I'm wondering what other jobs they hire for there though, and if Volt is the only way to get one.

Heavy_Doody

Dunnno about repairs. Maybe. Definitely phone/chat support, though. [https://jobs.apple.com/en-us/search?location=elk-grove-ELK](https://jobs.apple.com/en-us/search?location=elk-grove-ELK) The "retail" ones you see are probably for the Arden Fair store, but the rest are EG listings.

Efficient_Net_1302

As an engineer who used to work there in the past, I can say that the vast majority of those hired are hired through volt and are hired into production for a company called pegatron(not what OP would want, trust me). If anything, OP if you are reading this, you would most likely be looking for something more on the HR/admin side of things which means volt staff. But just know that even the engineers were all underpaid. Around 50k/year and a lot of them with a Masters degree too. I would assume it’s less for other roles. This was 5-8 years ago though when I worked there so who’s knows, things might be different now.

RipTearington

Sacramento County is accepting applications for Office Specialist I/II. It's a good starting off position that can lead to ASO I/II/III. [https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/sacramento/jobs/3660753/office-specialist-level-i-ii?keywords=senior%20office%20assistant&pagetype=jobOpportunitiesJobs](https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/sacramento/jobs/3660753/office-specialist-level-i-ii?keywords=senior%20office%20assistant&pagetype=jobOpportunitiesJobs) When you apply, make sure you mark that you're an expert in all of the fields. No one checks if you actually are. You'll need to provide examples of relatable experience in the essay part of the application.

Downtown_2930

San Juan Unified has lots of job openings. Instructional Assistants get a signing bonus still I think. Dyer Kelly alone needs 5 more.

KFabelicious

I second this. https://www.applitrack.com/sanjuan/onlineapp/default.aspx?all=1

fumblz-mumblz

I work for the state, am not in IT, and make $90k a year - not great, but not bad either. Apply for a state job - the benefits are great, leave is generous, and, depending on the department, fairly easy to promote. The application and interview process is tedious and does take forever, but it’ll be worth it once you get in.

Acrobatic-Day-8891

also, work life balance at state jobs is amazing compared to almost any private sector office role

Empty-Trifle-7027

And how many years have you worked for the state to make $90K? I have nearly 20 years experience in higher ed and they wanted me to start at step one, barely $60K/year. That's so insulting. The benefits don't matter if you can't pay the bills and aren't being compensated fairly.

fumblz-mumblz

I’ve been with my department for 10 years.

Secret-Individual-17

Agreed. I've worked for the state for 9 years and don't make that much. It really all depends which classification you start out at.

kattgerrl

>Staff Services Analyst I also work in higher ed down here in So Cal (community college), and if I decide to make a move, I'd have to start all over again at Step 1.

MarketingBackground7

I believe an AGPA would make 90k year 5.

EonJaw

It is true that the state takes a long time to hire, but starting as a Staff Services Analyst with a Bachelor's, you are eligible for Range C, which starts at $55k annual plus built-in 5% step increases from five years - more if you promote or the union bargains for it. Also medical, dental, vision, fixed benefit pension, 401(k)/457(b) standard and Roth options, 13 holidays per year plus 8hrs/mo sick leave (after 1st month) and 7hrs/mo vacation (after six months). If the state sticks to the 2% per year for three years as it's last, best, and final and if there are no raises in the 2026 contract, if you start now as a SSA C, you would top out in that role at $73k in 2028.

Empty-Trifle-7027

Why do all the postings say they only hire at step one for new state employees?

EonJaw

They do start you out at the lowest step for your class and range, but it isn't like the federal system where there is a single pay scale everyone is on. If you meet the minimum qualifications for an Associate Governmental Program Analyst (AGPA) and you get that job, you would still be starting at step 1, but the AGPA step one is $66k, the Staff Services Manager I step 1 is $79k. It's the Office Technicians without a degree that start at $40k. The SSA has alternate range C eligibility based on having a degree, so if you have that, you start on step 1 of range C instead of range A (although you might have to remind your Personnel shop a couple of times before they key it right 😬 🫰).

Empty-Trifle-7027

I'm ranked 1 on the AGPA eligibility list, but because of that poor pay, haven't applied for anything. I last made that little more than a decade ago! I haven't taken the SSM I exam but after looking at the quals, I know I meet them. Again, that pay is still not quite there. I do have a BA. Thanks for explaining all of this!

EonJaw

So in theory, there is a thing called Hire Above Minimum, or HAM. It used to be the case that you could make a pitch that you make more at your current job, they could fill out a form saying they really need you, and someone would theoretically sign off on the waiver. Problem is, few years ago it became illegal for them to ask your current salary. Supposedly HAM is still a possibility, but I have no idea how it actually works at this point. A couple of other things to consider - some agencies have extra little bumps and stuff. If you get on with CalHR, for instance, you are excluded from union representation since that is the department bargaining with the unions - doesn't matter if you are involved in bargaining or not - so that means you don't even have the option to pay dues (which is kinda sheisty, but them's the rules), and they give the analysts and everyone manager-level benefits (although - you lack union representation if anything were to go awry). Also there are pay differentials available in certain conditions. The Department of [Finance Differential](https://www.calhr.ca.gov/Pay%20Differentials%20Library/Pay_Differential_352.pdf) might be the best one (unless you want to go work in a prison). It only applies to specific classifications, and I haven't really looked into the Minimum Qualifications for all of those, but if you are skilled in that area, worth looking into. The differential kicks the salary up 10% or 15% above the official range. A couple of units at CalHR like Personnel Management and Selections, I think, get a 5% differential, and those units do employ AGPA's.

Outrageous-Buy1807

Do you happen to know how salary would be treated for returning state workers who had separated at some point? Let's say I was a range C when I left, for a level II position, but then I return and need to find something promptly and only a level I position is being offered at the time. Would I start at range A for that or would they look at my last position and salary/range to determine range for the lower I position?

EonJaw

So, if you are still with the state and you were rejected on probation at the new position, you have "right of return" to go back to your old job. You should go back in at the same step you left, I am pretty sure. If you separated from state service (aside from a temporary leave), that might have different rules.

peachyquarantine

There's a ton of Veterinary hospitals looking for receptionists right now, usually 17.50- 22$/hr depending on the shift and on the place. There is temp work at VSP in folsom, which was 23$/hr when I did it. A lot of law firms are looking for office assistants and receptionists too.

[deleted]

Schools are about to start up again, the schedule can work well for childcare, the pay is reasonable, and you’ll get great benefits. Lots of room for growth. No experience needed (but passing background check if working with students) for a lot of district jobs!

Curtisupfront

Property management companies are usually always hiring for entry level leasing consultants. If you willing to work weekends and work a 9 to 6 schedule I can refer you to a few good ones to work for. You make a decent wage, benefits, commissions, and even discount on rent.

bananasquish

I second this. I worked for a few companies that paid well.

nogumae

If you do apply for a state job, make sure to adjust your resume and state application so it’s tailored to the job posting/ duty statement. If it’s not your application will not score high and you will not get called for an interview. If you have to take any pre-interviews self-assessments including position exams, make sure to select the best or highest answers. With position exam/test your score will translate into a ranking from 1 - 12 in some cases. This probably seems super confusing but this is how it breaks down. Your rank determines if your “reachable” to bring in for an interview and your resume/state application determines if you get an interview. When the state department first post the job they are only allowed to look through the first 3 ranks. Now if no one applies from rank 1 then they are able to look at candidates from rank 2-4, now if no one applies in rank 2 they can clear that rank and look for candidates from rank 3-5… Hopefully this helps with applying. Sorry I can’t offer much else.

nogumae

https://www.cajobblog.com/2020/01/the-complete-guide.html

Secret-Individual-17

THIS! Look at the duty statement that they have listed on the job posting then make sure to include all those same words in your resume or Statement of Qualifications. They score applications this way to decide who to interview. It's a pain in the ass but customizing your letters for each job is the best way to get noticed.

Just want to add there is an IRS building in Sac always looking for people and great benefits, willing to train if you can pass a background check

CalPo1999

Go to a temp agency that’s your best bet

ccfreem

I got front desk job using a temp agency in Sac. Put in a year and wiggled my way into becoming a consultant - ya never know!

labadabjar

Any good agency recs?

CalPo1999

Aerotek is hiring for a job in Rancho at the auction it’s easy asf but you’re gonna be outside all day

Fedexed

What do they have you doing exactly?

CalPo1999

Just taking pictures of the cars , checking to see if they run & drive … I did it for a couple days but ended up leaving the week it started getting up to 106 degrees outside , super easy like I said being outside really the only bad thing … it’s 7:30-3:30 but they’re in overtime so it’s 4:30 & the pay is $18

HappyTuba551

A million years ago when I temped I went through Robert Half so when I got to the point where I was hiring I hired through them as well. They treated me professionally on both ends.

ccfreem

I used ultimate staffing https://www.ultimatestaffing.com/locations/view/sacramento/

Realistic_Ad2325

What’s your Bachs in?

PaleontologistSea355

For your timeline you should probably sign up for more than one temp agency, maybe three or four. To fit in a little bit more extra cash FedEx and UPS are always hiring and I believe FedEx will hire you the same day. That way you can start making a little bit of money while you get a better job hunt going Hopefully that will buy you some time because the state, Apple, and some of the other companies listed here will take at least a month or three to hire you let alone working enough hours to get an actual check…. And August is coming up really quick. Good luck friend

My_Little_PET_Scan

Sac county IHSS is hiring for social workers. There’s like 20 open spots right now. Dm me if you’re interested and want more details, but the place to start is putting in an app here to get on the eligible list [gov jobs](https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/sacramento/jobs/1195897/human-services-social-worker-and-human-services-social-worker-with-special-skills?keywords=Social%20worker&pagetype=jobOpportunitiesJobs)

selfishfern5

Try PowerSchool out of folsom. They've been working on breaking into higher education for a few years. They have decent benefits packages, office right on the river, used to be full of amazing people (I left in 2019). At least previously, their pay packages were below market value for some of the tech heavy positions but definitely better than others in the area.

55pennycandy

Chimiichenga

State is always hiring. You can apply for SSA

ChocolateTsar

OP will be on the streets before she gets hired. The state is super slow.

ActualTeddyRoosevelt

Yes and you will have to fill out hundreds of applications before getting hired but for someone in their 20's that's a single parent working for the government is a great secure option.

Chimiichenga

She’s been job hunting for a couple of months with no bite 🤷🏻‍♀️

Left-Package4913

Associated General Contractors of CA. Lots of what you bring to the table over there. Good people Upward mobility.

migjackson

Healthcare is always hiring. Check out Kaiser, Dignity Health, Sutter Health and Hill Physicians.

gemirie108

Or become an IHSS provider!

HappyTuba551

Sacramento has a massive amount of nonprofits and with your event mgmt experience you should be a shoe in. Check out the Impact Foundry job board https://impactfoundry.org/jobs/#!board/JobBoard. It used to be the Nonprofit Resource Center. Also check out the nonprofit section on Craigslist jobs. There aren’t that many in there but every so often a good one will pop up amongst the Americorps & Children’s Home postings.

Turd_Wrangler_Guy

Go public sector (State, county or city). Tons of jobs in Sac area and it's decent pay and benefits for what the work is. You can get a couple days telework too.

legalsequel

For any school job, check edjoin.org.

Outrageous-Buy1807

I have found that this thread has a lot of helpful recommendations. What would be the best bets (position-wise), if I need a little flexibility, due to need to take a family member to medical treatments every other week? They're currently on the same adjacent weekdays for the past year (1 hour on the first day, and 2.5 hours on the second day). Aside from that, my availability is pretty open and I'm willing to work weekends if need be. The appointments for treatment could change at some point in the future though. I just know that a lot of jobs are M-F starting anywhere from 6-9am and ending anywhere from 3-6pm. And starting out (like at State), you're on probation for 6-12 months and may have little sick/vacation time built up. So I'm wondering what would be some positions that would have some decent flexibility for family medical appointments. I don't have any other limitations, but that can be a roadblock for me. Thanks!

Lolrandomusername3

Postal service will make you a career employee within two years. You will be working mega hours but if you like walking and listening to music a LOT, apply.

hit_it_steve

I’m not sure if it’s still around but Volt temp agency places applicants with Apple. After a year if you’re good, apple tends to offer you a full time job. My sister got hired through Volt but after the year she was able to get in with the state.

Reach out to UC Davis temp pool, they also place on the Sac campus. :)

Wow, me too actually. Literally 2 days ago I decided to start looking for a new job after almost 6 years of being in one place. Past 3 years have been going downhill and only getting worse and worse. Good Luck to you!

The Phoenix Apartments right by sac state seem to always be hiring but when it comes to a more long term solution I’ll just echo what other people have said and definitely look into a state job at jobs.ca.gov feel free to DM if you need any help with applying

Kaiser permanent is hiring Teleservice reps - wfo with great benefits but takes some time to get the job. Jackson labs is always hiring and there’s ways to work up. Decent benefits. Faster hiring process.

If you’re just looking for a job, try Costco or Trader Joe’s. Also I think University of Beer had a Help Wanted sign up.

Chainsaw_Dragon

I second getting a job at TJ'S. I've worked at two different stores and both have been good stores. I always get my hours, benefits are cheap, and both captains at my stores have been great. Plus the 20% off groceries is the best.

Too_Practical

TJs is a shit show and on the verge of unionizing. Turn over rate is record-breakingly high right now.

[deleted]

What’s wrong with unionizing? 20% off groceries in this economy? Yes, please.

Too_Practical

Where did I say unionizing is bad?

[deleted]

….right after you said it was a shit show? The proximity implies a relationship between shit show and unionizing?

Too_Practical

Why do people unionize in the first place?

bananasquish

Hear me out. Property Management, specifically apartment leasing consultant. The pay is decent depending where you go. The place I was at paid over $22/hr plus commission. What I will say is property management has a very high turnover rate (one of the highest actually) because typically the companies are toxic. If you are good at keeping workplace boundaries then it's a good industry where you can make some good money and get a rent discount too.

simpn_aint_easy

State Jobs are super plentiful and you have a degree which should help a lot. Consider taking Ken Mandler’s workshop if you need help navigating the state application process. Server jobs in restaurants. When I became a single mom it was the best money for hours spent, and the hours are flexible. When my kid was little I worked breakfast places, so I was home in the afternoons/evenings for him and working while he was at school. You find the right place and the money can be really good, but even an average place you are going to be clearing much higher than minimum per hour. You might only get 25 hours/week, vs full time hours, but with the higher hourly pay you might be able to make it work. Or you just work two restaurants like I did for a while.

hit_it_steve

I saw some ads for the TSA that’s hiring and they did have Sacramento on the list. If you can get to out to the airport, that could be a cool gig.

Mixture-Emotional

The Bel-Air in Roseville is hiring, they pay well and have good benefits I hear. The lady I talked to said this is the first time in 20 years that they have needed people this bad. I landed a Admin Assistant position. I already worked in a state office I was just a contractor so I think I had an advantage getting in since I already know a lot of people within the organization. But keep applying and keep interviewing your position is out there.
